Sophisticated use of upper limb haptic interactions during adaptive locomotion.

Humans commonly engage in upper limb haptic interactions during bipedal locomotion, and the expansive use of our arms makes us unique compared to the quadrupeds we evolved from. Examples of these haptic interactions include walking while carrying an object, using environmental surfaces such as a railing to provide stability assistance, and holding hands while walking with another individual. These interactions may increase the complexity of our locomotor behaviors, such as when feedforward control is employed to dampen arm motion and dissipate reaction forces at heel contact to stabilize an ob

Establishing Personalized and Sparse Spinal Reflex Circuitry from Locomotion Data.

Spinal reflex circuitry-based controllers have shown promising capabilities in controlling the biomechanics of locomotion in simulation. Studies have been done to tune or identify reflex circuitry from imposed objectives, such as metabolic energy efficiency, maintaining balance or mimicking experimental data. However, in those works, the reflex structure was predefined by the authors. This may limit the generalizing capabilities of such circuits and prevent a better understanding of the dominant reflex loops in human locomotion. In this work we propose an identification framework that can iden

VPS13D mutations affect mitochondrial homeostasis and locomotion in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Mitochondria control cellular metabolism, serve as hubs for signaling and organelle communication, and are important for the health and survival of cells. VPS13D encodes a cytoplasmic lipid transfer protein that regulates mitochondrial morphology, mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) contact, quality control of mitochondria. VPS13D mutations have been reported in patients displaying ataxic and spastic gait disorders with variable age of onset. Here we used CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing to create VPS13D related-spinocerebellar ataxia-4 (SCAR4) missense mutations and C-terminal deletion in VPS

A Locomotion Mode Recognition Algorithm Using Adaptive Dynamic Movement Primitives.

Control systems of robotic prostheses should be designed to decode the users' intent to start, stop, or change locomotion; and to select the suitable control strategy, accordingly. This paper describes a locomotion mode recognition algorithm based on adaptive Dynamic Movement Primitive models used as locomotion templates. The models take foot-ground contact information and thigh roll angle, measured by an inertial measurement unit, for generating continuous model variables to extract features for a set of Support Vector Machines. The proposed algorithm was tested offline on data acquired from

Spinal control of locomotion before and after spinal cord injury.

Thoracic spinal cord injury affects long propriospinal neurons that interconnect the cervical and lumbar enlargements. These neurons are crucial for coordinating forelimb and hindlimb locomotor movements in a speed-dependent manner. However, recovery from spinal cord injury is usually studied over a very limited range of speeds that may not fully expose circuitry dysfunction. To overcome this limitation, we investigated overground locomotion in rats trained to move over an extended distance with a wide range of speeds both pre-injury and after recovery from thoracic hemisection or contusion in

Gaze During Locomotion in Virtual Reality and the Real World.

How vision guides gaze in realistic settings has been researched for decades. Human gaze behavior is typically measured in laboratory settings that are well controlled but feature-reduced and movement-constrained, in sharp contrast to real-life gaze control that combines eye, head, and body movements. Previous real-world research has shown environmental factors such as terrain difficulty to affect gaze; however, real-world settings are difficult to control or replicate. Virtual reality (VR) offers the experimental control of a laboratory, yet approximates freedom and visual complexity of the r

Soft Rod-Climbing Robot Inspired by Winding Locomotion of Snake.

Soft climbing robots have attracted much attention of researchers for their potential applications on the wall or inside the tube. However, making a soft robot climb on the outer surface of a rod or tube by agile and efficient motion has long been a challenge. Inspired by the winding climbing locomotion of arboreal snakes, a tethered pneumatic-actuated winding-styled soft rod-climbing robot that consists of two winding actuators and a telescopic actuator is proposed in this work. Based on constant curvature assumption, we develop a theoretical model to analyze the linear and bending motion of

Phalangeal joints kinematics in ostrich (Struthio camelus) locomotion on sand.

In ostriches, the toes are the only body parts that contact loose sand surfaces. Thus, toe interphalangeal joint motions may play vital biomechanical roles. However, there is little research on ostrich phalangeal joint movements while walking or running on sand. The results from the three-dimensional motion track analysis system Simi Motion show that gait pattern has no significant effect on the key indicators (angles at touch-down, mid-stance, lift-off and range of motion) of the toe joint angles. The motion of the toe phalanges when walking and running on sand is basically the same. The grou

Human Locomotion in Hypogravity: From Basic Research to Clinical Applications.

We have considerable knowledge about the mechanisms underlying compensation of Earth gravity during locomotion, a knowledge obtained from physiological, biomechanical, modeling, developmental, comparative, and paleoanthropological studies. By contrast, we know much less about locomotion and movement in general under sustained hypogravity. This lack of information poses a serious problem for human space exploration. In a near future humans will walk again on the Moon and for the first time on Mars. It would be important to predict how they will move around, since we know that locomotion and mob

Role of phosphodiesterase-4 on ethanol elicited locomotion and narcosis.

The cAMP signaling pathway has emerged as an important modulator of the pharmacological effects of ethanol. In this respect, the cAMP-dependent protein kinase has been shown to play an important role in the modulation of several ethanol-induced behavioral actions. Cellular levels of cAMP are maintained by the activity of adenylyl cyclases and phosphodiesterases. In the present work we have focused on ascertaining the role of PDE4 in mediating the neurobehavioral effects of ethanol. For this purpose, we have used the selective PDE4 inhibitor Ro 20-1724. This compound has been proven to enhance

The equine neck and its function during movement and locomotion.

During both locomotion and body movements at stance, the head and neck of the horse are a major craniocaudal and lateral balancing mechanism employing input from the visual, vestibular and proprioceptive systems. The function of the equine neck has recently become the focus of several research groups; this is probably also feeding on an increase of interest in the equine neck in equestrian sports, with a controversial discussion of specific neck positions such as maximum head and neck flexion. The aim of this review is to offer an overview of new findings on the structures and functions of the

Visuomotor control of human adaptive locomotion: understanding the anticipatory nature.

To maintain balance during locomotion, the central nervous system (CNS) accommodates changes in the constraints of spatial environment (e.g., existence of an obstacle or changes in the surface properties). Locomotion while modifying the basic movement patterns in response to such constraints is referred to as adaptive locomotion. The most powerful means of ensuring balance during adaptive locomotion is to visually perceive the environmental properties at a distance and modify the movement patterns in an anticipatory manner to avoid perturbation altogether. For this reason, visuomotor control o

Ankle load modulates hip kinetics and EMG during human locomotion.

The purpose of this research was to examine the role of isolated ankle-foot load in regulating locomotor patterns in humans with and without spinal cord injury (SCI). We used a powered ankle-foot orthosis to unilaterally load the ankle and foot during robotically assisted airstepping. The load perturbation consisted of an applied dorsiflexion torque designed to stimulate physiological load sensors originating from the ankle plantar flexor muscles and pressure receptors on the sole of the foot. We hypothesized that 1) the response to load would be phase specific with enhanced ipsilateral extens

Does locomotion improve the cognitive profile of children with meningomyelocele?

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to test the hypothesis that locomotion can improve cognitive development in a paediatric population with meningomyelocele (MMC) and hydrocephalus. METHODS: Twenty-nine children with MMC and shunted hydrocephalus were studied. All had motor impairment, but after physiotherapy and training walking was possible in 23 of them (5 autonomously and 18 with an aid), while 6 had recourse to a wheelchair. In all 23 cases neuroimaging (TC scan and/or MRI) was performed to obtain data on the sequelae of perinatal lesions, alterations of the corpus callosum, and the pre

Locomotion, respiratory physiology, and energetics of amphibious and terrestrial crabs.

The transition from breathing air to breathing water requires physiological and morphological adaptations. The study of crustaceans in transitional habitats provides important information as to the nature of these adaptations. This article addresses the physiology of air breathing in amphibious and terrestrial crabs and their relative locomotor abilities. Potamonautes warreni is an apparently amphibious freshwater crab from southern Africa, Cardisoma hirtipes is an air-breathing gecarcinid crab with some dependency on freshwater, and Gecarcoidea natalis is an obligate air-breathing gecarcinid

Glycogen loss in rat muscles during locomotion on different inclines.

Running downhill causes structural damage in deep slow-twitch extensor muscles of the limbs. Both mechanical and metabolic hypotheses have been proposed to explain the damage. The purpose of this study was to use measurements of glycogen loss in the muscles and metabolic rates of rats running on the level and up and down 16 degrees inclines at 26 m min-1 to try to distinguish between these hypotheses. Glycogen loss in the soleus and medial head to the triceps brachii muscles during running on the three inclines was proportional to whole-animal oxygen consumption, indicating that there were no

Trunk movements during locomotion in the marsupial Monodelphis domestica (didelphidae).

The small didelphid cmarsupial, Monodelphis domestica, uses a lateral sequence walk during slow treadmill locomotion and gradually shifts to a trot as speed increases. At higher speeds it changes abruptly to a half-bound. Cinematographic records suggest significant lateral bending but no sagittal bending of the trunk during the slow walk and a reduced amount of lateral bending during the fast walk. There is slight lteral, but no sagittal, bending during the trot. Sagittal bending is obvious during the half-bound, but no lateral bending is evident. Cineradiography confirms that the vertebral co

Electromyographic activity of cubital joint muscles in horses during locomotion.

Electromyographic (EMG) activity of 4 muscles of the cubital joint and the strain of forelimb hooves were recorded telemetrically in 4 Thoroughbreds (with and without a rider) standing, walking, trotting, and cantering. Bipolar fine wire electrodes were inserted into the muscles, and strain gauges were attached to the hoof wall. Motion pictures (16 mm), synchronized with EMG tracings, were taken to obtain kinematic data. When horses were standing, the biceps brachii had tonic activity, but the brachialis and the caput longum and the caput laterale of the triceps brachii had no EMG activity. Th

Recovery of locomotion after chronic spinalization in the adult cat.

Cats were spinalized (T13) as adults and were trained to walk with the hindlimbs on a treadmill. After 3 weeks to 3 months and up to 1 year depending on the animal, all were capable of walking on the plantar surface of the feet and support the weight of the hindquarters. Interactive training appeared to accelerate the recovery of locomotion and maintain smooth locomotor movements. Despite the obvious loss of voluntary control and equilibrium which the experimenter partially compensated for by maintaining the thorax and/or the tail, the cats could walk with a regular rhythm and a well-coordinat

Vertical locomotion improves horizontal locomotion: effects of climbing on gait and other mobility aspects in Parkinson's disease. A secondary analysis from a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: In the Climb Up! Head Up! trial, we showed that sport climbing reduces bradykinesia, tremor, and rigidity in mildly to moderately affected participants with Parkinson's disease. This secondary analysis aimed to evaluate the effects of sport climbing on gait and functional mobility in this cohort. METHODS: Climb Up! Head Up! was a 1:1 randomized controlled trial. Forty-eight PD participants (Hoehn and Yahr stage 2-3) either participated in a 12-week, 90-min-per-week sport climbing course (intervention group) or were engaged in regular unsupervised physical activity (control group).
