Looking for new alternative raw materials is one of the key issues in line with a bioeconomy approach, particularly for particleboard manufacturing. In this framework, this paper presents a comparison of some physico-mechanical properties and the formaldehyde contents of particleboards made with 30% substitution of grass biomass from six perennial grass species. Our studies indicate relatively high values of mechanical properties for particleboards made with the addition of biomass from grasses with the C4 photosynthetic pathway: Miscanthus x giganteus and switchgrass (Panicum virgatum). The timing of grazing bouts (GB) determines how cattle allot time to meet their nutritional needs. Net photosynthesis and evapotranspirational losses increase herbage nonstructural carbohydrate and DM concentrations, which may lead to longer and more intense GB at dusk. Hence, linking the grazing pattern, plant phenology, and herbage allocation time emerges as an option to manipulate the GB and nutrient intake. The objectives of this work were to analyze grazing behavior and performance of beef heifers when herbage allocation was at 0700 each morning (MHA) or at 1500 each afternoon (AHA). Two

Hepatic osteodystrophy, a metabolic bone disorder associated with chronic liver disease, is characterized by reduced bone mass and structural deterioration. While the liver-bone axis is increasingly recognized as a critical mediator of systemic inflammation and hepatic pathology, the efficacy of nutritional strategies targeting this pathway remains poorly understood. This study evaluated the protective effects of pasture grazing through perennial ryegrass feeding on hepatic and skeletal health in meat-type geese. Pasture grazing significantly improved liver morphology, and fat accumulation, wh

Pollen-induced allergic diseases are on the rise globally with recent studies pointing towards climate change co-factors potentially influencing pollen seasons and pollen load. This study investigated the hydration-induced rupturing behaviour and allergenic potential of pollen belonging to species of ryegrass (Lolium perenne), golden wattle (Acacia pycnantha) and pine (Pinus radiata). Using an in vitro model of human bronchial epithelial cells (Calu-3), this study evaluated cellular responses upon exposure to pollen extracts through multiple experimental approaches. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of NDF content in highly digestible grass/clover silage on particle size reduction, ruminal stratification, and selective retention in dairy heifers. The reduction in particle size from feed to feces was evaluated and related to feed intake, chewing activity, and apparent digestibility. Four grass/clover harvests (Mixtures of Lolium perenne, Trifolium pratense, and Trifolium repens) were performed from early May to late August at different maturities, at different regrowth stages, and with different clover proportions, resulting in sila

Soil pollution with Cd is an environmental problem common in the world, and it is necessary to establish what Cd concentrations in soil could be dangerous to its fertility from toxicity effects and the risk of transference of this element to plants and other organisms of the food chain. In this study, we assessed Cd toxicity on soil microorganisms and plants in two semiarid soils (uncultivated and cultivated). Soil ATP content, dehydrogenase activity, and plant growth were measured in the two soils spiked with concentrations ranging from 3 to 8000 mg Cd/kg soil and incubated for 3 h, 20 days,

The valorization of medicinal and aromatic plant by-products represents a sustainable strategy to recover bioactive compounds and reduce agricultural waste. In this study, pruning residues of Laurus nobilis L. and Myrtus communis L. were investigated as sources of essential oils (EOs) for bio-based weed management. Leaves and young stems were subjected to anatomical, micromorphological, and histochemical analyses to ascertain that active secretory structures were maintained. EOs were then obtained by steam distillation and characterized by GC-FID and GC-MS. Phytotoxicity was evaluated on two c

Incorporation of plant defense activators is an innovative approach to development of an integrated strategy for the management of turfgrass diseases. The effects of salicylic acid (SA), benzothiadiazole (BTH, chemical analog of SA), jasmonic acid (JA), and ethephon (ET, an ethylene-releasing compound) on development of gray leaf spot in perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) caused by Magnaporthe oryzae were evaluated. Gray leaf spot disease incidence and severity were significantly decreased when plants were treated prior to inoculation with SA, BTH, and partially by ET but not by JA. Accumu

Adsorption isotherms of prosulfocarb were determined on soils with different physicochemical properties. The extent of adsorption increased with the organic carbon content, but the results also suggested the involvement of some inorganic soil surfaces. In order better to understand the role of each soil surface, adsorption-desorption isotherms were determined on model soil colloids consisting of a soil humic acid, a montmorillonite, a synthetic aluminium hydroxide and their associations. The highest adsorption was observed on the humic acid, but it was also confirmed that the montmorillonite i

The absorption and assimilation patterns of (15)NO(3) (-) supplied as the Ca(2+) and Mg(2+) salts to intact ryegrass (Lolium perenne) seedlings were compared. No statistically significant effect of ambient cation on the amounts of (15)NO(3) (-) absorbed was observed in the initial six hours, but during the subsequent six hours, absorption from Ca((15)NO(3))(2) exceeded that from Mg ((15)NO(3))(2).Lower rates of (15)NO(3) (-) assimilation were found in roots exposed to Mg((15)NO(3))(2) than in those exposed to Ca((15)NO(3))(2). It was proposed that Mg(2+) initiated a restriction in (15)NO(3) (-

A major problem in flower bulb cultivation is weed control. Synthetic herbicides are mainly used, although they cause a range of problems, and integrated weed control through application of naturally occurring allelochemicals would be highly desirable. Flower bulb production creates large amounts of leftover biomass. Utilizing this source for weed control may provide new applications of the bulb crops. We therefore screened 33 flower bulb extracts for allelochemical activity against weeds. Several methanol and chloroform extracts were observed to inhibit germination and growth of Senecio vulga

Heat stress is a major environmental constraint limiting the productivity of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), a widely cultivated forage and turfgrass. Here, through a genome-wide association study (GWAS) analysis of a diverse perennial ryegrass population, we identified LpbZIP41 as a major heat tolerance quantitative trait locus (QTL) for heat tolerance. Natural variation at this locus comprises three haplotypes showing differential thermotolerance, with evidence of positive selection during breeding. LpbZIP41 localizes to the nucleus and exhibits rapid heat-inducible expression. Function

Conventional phytoremediation of heavy metal-contaminated industrial soils often fails to achieve desired outcomes due to limited metal accumulation capacity and low plant biomass. To overcome these limitations, we developed a synergistic micro-nano bubbles (MNBs)-ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) remediation system. MNBs supply reactive oxygen species to mobilize heavy metals, thereby optimizing the rhizosphere microenvironment. The results demonstrated that MNBs treatment significantly stimulated both aboveground growth and biomass accumulation in ryegrass. Under high-polluted condition, the shoo

Tradescantia spathacea Sw. (Commelinaceae) is widely cultivated as an ornamental and medicinal plant in Southeast Asia, and its pharmacological properties are well known. On the other hand, this plant species is classified as an invasive weed in some countries. As a noxious weed, T. spathacea has been reported to disrupt the growth of native plants. However, no study has reported on its allelopathic activity. Thus, we investigated the allelopathic property and inhibitory substance of T. spathacea. The extracts of T. spathacea significantly inhibited the shoots and roots of alfalfa (Medicago sa

This study investigated the effects of dietary ryegrass supplementation on growth performance, carcass traits, and intestinal microbiota of meat geese. Ninety healthy 21-day-old male Jiangnan white geese were randomly divided into two groups: the test group (commercial diet: ryegrass = 1:1.7) and the control group (commercial diet). Each group consisted of 3 replicates with 15 geese per replicate. Natural light was provided, and free access to food was allowed. The experimental period was 42 days. Results showed that ryegrass supplementation reduced the feed/gain (F/G) (P < 0.05) and increased
