This study investigates the long-term effects of loneliness on pain experiences in older Chinese adults, focusing on the mediating role of depression. Data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (2013-2020) included 1,592 participants aged 60 and above. Using robust mixed-effects logistic regression models, the study found that lonely participants were more likely to experience 12 site pain: headache (OR 1.23; 95% CI 1.09-1.39), shoulder (OR 1.16; 95% CI 1.04-1.30), wrist (OR 1.14; 95%CI 1.01-1.28), finger (OR 1.14, 95% CI 1.02-1.28), chest (OR 1.26; 95% CI 1.10-1.44), stomach

This article is based on 21 interviews in an Atlantic Canadian city with people who identified as having few or no friends. With all the talk of a modern loneliness epidemic, we might easily assume friendless people are lonely, yet here we take an interpretive approach to analyze how they alternately claim to experience and not experience loneliness. We argue that claims to loneliness or its absence are never merely personal stories or problems of individual health or wellbeing, but are shaped by larger cultural resources and meanings. We found that friendless people both lament and celebrate

Introduction In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, loneliness and social isolation have become major public health crises. Loneliness has reached epidemic levels and negatively impacts both health and quality of life. "Casual contacts" is a developing line of research that may hold promise in stemming the current crisis. Casual contacts refer to interactions and relationships with people who are neither family nor friends. Our objectives are to (a) document the impact of casual contacts on community-based adults (Studies 1 and 2) and (b) study the impact of loneliness (Studies 1 and 2) and soc

Social adaptation arises from the interaction between the individual and the social environment. However, little empirical evidence exists regarding the relationship between social contact and social adaptation. We propose that loneliness and social networks are key factors explaining social adaptation. Sixty-four healthy subjects with no history of psychiatric conditions participated in this study. All participants completed self-report questionnaires about loneliness, social network, and social adaptation. On a separate day, subjects underwent a resting state fMRI recording session. A hierar

Elevated mental illness prevalence complicates efforts designed to address the opioid crisis in Appalachia. The recovery community acknowledges that loneliness impacts mood and engagement in care factors; however, the predictive relationship between loneliness and retention in medication-assisted outpatient treatment programs has not been explored. Our objectives were to identify associations between mental health factors and retention in treatment and elucidate treatment retention odds. Data were collected from eighty participants (n = 57 retained, n = 23 not retained) of a mindfulness-based

BACKGROUND: Pleasure-seeking reasons are the main drivers of pornography use (PU), but the regulation of unpleasant states, namely distraction from or suppression of negative emotions and stress relief, are other potential predictors of this behavior.
AIM: Our main objective is to develop an explanatory model of problematic PU, assessing difficulties in emotion regulation, loneliness, perceived stress, as well as age and gender as predictors.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted that included a total of 340 participants (M = 28.50 years, SD = 10.32). Self-report inventories were ad

We describe three subgroups of older lonely people (Persona), and design different approaches to loneliness that directly address their specific needs and circumstances: the combination approach. The use of Persona is a middle ground between 'one approach appropriate for all' and 'each person's own approach'. A Persona is described using various risk factors for loneliness. These are advanced age, living alone, small network, low perceived control, and low income. Based on this, we explore the potential effect of improving some of these situations for reducing loneliness (Cohen's d ranges betw

Loneliness is a significant health concern that may be influenced by dispositional features. Pathological narcissism may elevate loneliness through aversive interpersonal behaviors and negative social appraisals. The present study examined two dimensions of pathological narcissism, along with five-factor personality traits, in relation to loneliness among 120 young adults. Loneliness was also examined as a mediator between pathological narcissism and satisfaction with life. Narcissistic grandiosity and narcissistic vulnerability were both significantly associated with loneliness. Multiple regr

BACKGROUND: Loneliness is a common source of distress, suffering, and impaired quality of life in older persons. We examined the relationship between loneliness, functional decline, and death in adults older than 60 years in the United States.
METHODS: This is a longitudinal cohort study of 1604 participants in the psychosocial module of the Health and Retirement Study, a nationally representative study of older persons. Baseline assessment was in 2002 and follow-up assessments occurred every 2 years until 2008. Subjects were asked if they (1) feel left out, (2) feel isolated, or (3) lack com

OBJECTIVES: Older people in Spain and other Southern European countries are reported to feel lonelier than the older people in the North of Europe. Data from the 1970s and onwards consistently show this. The present study explores feelings of loneliness as a product of both cultural and situational determining factors, by comparing survey data for Spain and Sweden.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Data derived from several national surveys of the older people in Spain and Sweden with questions about loneliness. For closer analysis we use the Spanish 2006 Encuesta de Condiciones de Vida (Living conditions

BACKGROUND: Poor parental bonding in childhood has been associated with loneliness in younger populations. Whether these associations persists into middle and older adulthood is unclear. Additionally, given the overlapping relationship between loneliness and social isolation we sought to explore the role of social isolation in any associations present i.e. are those reporting worse parental bonding lonely due to less connections or are they more likely to be lonely regardless of isolation.
METHODS: Analysis of a nationally representative longitudinal sample of adults aged 50 and over from the

BACKGROUND: Loneliness is associated with numerous adverse health outcomes. However, little is known about its relationship with substance use among emergency department (ED) patients, a population at elevated risk for substance use and related harms. We examined associations between loneliness and past 90-day substance use among ED patients.
METHODS: A convenience sample of patients aged 18-75 years was recruited from an urban academic ED between March 2025 and January 2026 (N = 300). Loneliness was assessed using the UCLA Loneliness Scale (UCLA-20; range = 20 to 80). The Tobacco, Alcohol, P

OBJECTIVE: Loneliness has emerged as one of the most pressing public health challenges in older adulthood, exerting profound effects on mental, cognitive, and general medical health. Defined as the subjective perception of social disconnection, loneliness is associated with depression, anxiety, sleep disturbances, cognitive decline, cardiovascular disease, and increased mortality. Despite decades of intervention research, the multifaceted nature of loneliness remains a challenge to clinicians and researchers. With this review, the author aimed to provide a conceptual overview of how modalities

Loneliness is a growing public health concern among older adults, underscoring the need to better understand the complex interplay of factors associated with it. Although technology can enhance social connectedness, limited attention has been given to discrepancies between desired and actual technology use in daily life. This study examined loneliness, focusing on perceived technology-use gaps alongside health-related factors, including depressive symptoms, sleep quality, functional cognition, and sensorimotor abilities. Participants included 211 adults aged 65 to 87, who completed the de Jong
