Feasibility of Drill-Tip Position Estimation During Cortical Bone Drilling Using Force and Torque Signals.

PURPOSE: Excessive drill advancement after cortical breakthrough is a potential safety concern in orthopaedic procedures. We developed a data-driven approach to estimate the drill-tip position relative to the far cortex prior to breakthrough using time-series thrust force and spindle torque signals. METHODS: Drilling experiments were performed on 268 porcine cortical bone specimens at a constant feed rate of 0.5 mm/s. A long short-term memory network was trained to estimate the drill-tip position from filtered force and torque signals. The reference position was derived from breakthrough timi

Optimized feature selection and zero-parameter channel attention BiLSTM for RPL-attack classification in IoT networks.

The increasing adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) devices introduces significant security challenges, particularly in networks based on the Routing Protocol for Low-Power and Lossy Networks (RPL), where resource constraints limit the effectiveness of conventional security solutions. This work presents an optimized deep learning framework for detecting and classifying RPL-based routing attacks. The framework integrates Chaotic Pied Kingfisher Optimization (Ch-PKO) for feature selection with a Zero-parameter Channel Attention Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (ZCAtt-BiLSTM) model for classi

Epilepsy represents a widespread neurological disorder that causes unexpected seizure occurrences which produce significant obstacles for daily life activities in people worldwide. Real-time seizure detection accuracy stands vital for safeguarding patients while ensuring timely interventions and bettering their quality of life. The present seizure detection methods suffer from multiple limitations including poor applicability across different cases and excessive incorrect alerts and inefficient feature selection procedures. Traditional deep learning algorithms generally fail to detect EEG patt

The role of eye movements and covert shifts of attention in working and long-term memory retrieval.

The "Looking at Nothing" (LAN) effect describes the tendency to look toward locations where information was originally presented during memory retrieval. Previous research by Scholz et al. (Memory & Cognition, 46, 230-243, 2018) suggested that memory performance may benefit not only from eye movements to these locations, but also from covert shifts of attention. The present study investigated whether such effects also occur during retrieval from working memory. Across two experiments, participants encoded three word pairs presented at distinct screen locations. Memory for one word pair was lat

Assessing the involvement of long-term memory in working memory.

Complex span tasks are working memory (WM) tasks in which participants maintain series of items (e.g., letters) for further serial recall while performing a concurrent task (e.g., parity judgement on digits). It has been shown that even pushing the demand of this concurrent task at its individual limits strongly reduces, but does not totally abolish, memory performance. A small memory residual of about one item remains. The present study aimed at testing the hypothesis that this residual is retrieved from long-term memory (LTM). For this purpose, two experiments compared the size of memory res

Long-lasting, dissociable improvements in working memory and long-term memory in older adults with repetitive neuromodulation.

The development of technologies to protect or enhance memory in older people is an enduring goal of translational medicine. Here we describe repetitive (4-day) transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) protocols for the selective, sustainable enhancement of auditory-verbal working memory and long-term memory in 65-88-year-old people. Modulation of synchronous low-frequency, but not high-frequency, activity in parietal cortex preferentially improved working memory on day 3 and day 4 and 1 month after intervention, whereas modulation of synchronous high-frequency, but not low-frequency

Dissociations and interactions between attention guidance from negative templates maintained in visual working memory and long-term memory.

Visual attention can be guided away from objects known to be irrelevant to the current task. These negative templates (specifying distractor features) can be maintained in visual working memory (VWM) and in long-term memory (LTM). LTM-based negative templates allow for direct suppression of to-be-avoided feature values, observable in the earliest selective operations during search (i.e., implemented proactively). However, there is mixed evidence regarding whether VWM-based negative templates are likewise implemented directly and proactively. Here, we contrasted LTM- and VWM-based negative guid

Dissociable anterograde amnesic effects of retrosplenial cortex and hippocampal lesions on spontaneous object recognition memory in rats.

The amnesic effects of excitotoxic lesions of the rat retrosplenial cortex (RS) and hippocampus (HPC) in the spontaneous object recognition (SOR) performance were investigated. The SOR test consisted of the sample-exposure session(s) and a test session. First, to test retrograde amnesia, rats received four sample-exposure sessions within a day at 4 weeks and 1 day before the surgery, respectively. In the test sessions conducted 1 week after the surgery, both lesion groups showed a temporally ungraded retrograde amnesia. Second, to test anterograde amnesia, 1- and 4-week retention intervals wer

Persistent activity during working memory maintenance predicts long-term memory formation in the human hippocampus.

Working memory (WM) and long-term memory (LTM) are often viewed as separate cognitive systems. Little is known about how these systems interact when forming memories. We recorded single neurons in the human medial temporal lobe while patients maintained novel items in WM and completed a subsequent recognition memory test for the same items. In the hippocampus, but not in the amygdala, the level of WM content-selective persistent activity during WM maintenance was predictive of whether the item was later recognized with high confidence or forgotten. By contrast, visually evoked activity in the

Beyond initial encoding: measures of the post-encoding status of memory traces predict long-term recall during infancy.

The first years of life are witness to rapid changes in long-term recall ability. In the current research we contributed to an explanation of the changes by testing the absolute and relative contributions to long-term recall of encoding and post-encoding processes. Using elicited imitation, we sampled the status of 16-, 20-, and 24-month-old infants' memory representations at various time points after experience of events. In Experiment 1, infants were tested immediately, 1 week after encoding, and again after 1 month. The measure of 1-week trace status was a unique predictor of 1-month delaye

Localizing Memory Functions in Brain Tumor Patients: Anatomical Hotspots over 260 Patients.

OBJECTIVE: Memory complaints are common in patients after brain tumor, but is difficult to map memory functions during awake surgery, to preserve them. Thus we analyzed one of the largest data sets on clinical, surgical, and anatomical correlates of memory in patients with brain tumor to date, providing anatomical hotspots for short and long-term memory functions. METHODS: A total of 260 patients with brain tumor (130 high-grade gliomas; 76 low-grade gliomas [LGG]; 54 meningiomas) were tested on 2 commonly used short-term memory (Digit Span Forward and Corsi Spatial Span) and 2 long-term memo

Neural bases of orthographic long-term memory and working memory in dysgraphia.

Spelling a word involves the retrieval of information about the word's letters and their order from long-term memory as well as the maintenance and processing of this information by working memory in preparation for serial production by the motor system. While it is known that brain lesions may selectively affect orthographic long-term memory and working memory processes, relatively little is known about the neurotopographic distribution of the substrates that support these cognitive processes, or the lesions that give rise to the distinct forms of dysgraphia that affect these cognitive proces

Long-Term Recency in Anterograde Amnesia.

Amnesia is usually described as an impairment of a long-term memory (LTM) despite an intact short-term memory (STM). The intact recency effect in amnesia had supported this view. Although dual-store models of memory have been challenged by single-store models based on interference theory, this had relatively little influence on our understanding and treatment of amnesia, perhaps because the debate has centred on experiments in the neurologically intact population. Here we tested a key prediction of single-store models for free recall in amnesia: that people with amnesia will exhibit a memory a

A hybrid CNN-XLSTM-GRU deep learning model with autoencoder-based feature selection for hypothyroidism diagnosis.

Hypothyroidism, caused by reduced thyroid-hormone production, is often difficult to diagnose because its symptoms are non-specific and overlap with other disorders. We developed FusionNet-CXG, a hybrid deep-learning model that couples CNN, eXtended LSTM, and GRU components for hypothyroidism prediction. Experiments were performed on a public dataset (3,772 records; 30 features). Class imbalance was mitigated using SMOTE-NC, and performance was estimated using 10 repetitions of 5-fold stratified cross-validation, yielding 50 fold-level evaluations to obtain stable results. Across folds, FusionN

IoT-enabled smart home activity classification using BiLSTM and attention mechanisms.

IoT-enabled smart homes require accurate activity classification to enhance safety, healthcare monitoring, and energy efficiency through continuous sensing and intelligent interpretation of human behavior. Common approaches employ wearable or ambient sensors, signal preprocessing, feature extraction, and deep learning models such as CNNs, LSTMs, BiLSTM, and attention-based classifiers. These techniques generally achieve high classification accuracy, robust temporal modeling, and improved detection of complex activities, supporting reliable automation, health assessment, and anomaly recognition

Optimized multi-modal action recognition using multi-agent systems and adaptive temporal attention.

The recognition of human actions through visual input poses considerable difficulties owing to the diverse ways in which individuals perform the same actions, the temporal variations that are intrinsic to these actions, and the differing viewpoints from which they are perceived. In order to address the limitations of single-modality methods, researchers have increasingly adopted multimodal visual data fusion strategies. This study presents an optimized deep learning model designed for action recognition by combining multiple data modalities, such as depth, skeleton, and inertial data through a

Stability-aware LSTM-MPC framework for personalized levothyroxine dosing in Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

Hypothyroidism, most commonly caused by Hashimoto's thyroiditis, is characterized by insufficient production of thyroid hormones and is typically treated with oral levothyroxine (LT4). However, determining patient-specific LT4 dosage remains challenging due to significant inter-individual variability and the need for repeated clinical adjustments. In this study, a stability-aware, data-driven dosing framework is developed for personalized LT4 therapy. The proposed approach combines a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network for predicting free thyroxine (FT4) concentrations with a model pr

Data-driven and feature-sifting based state-of-health estimation for li-ion batteries using KPCA and NRBO-optimized transformer-LSTM hybrid model.

Electrochemical energy storage technologies, such as lithium-ion batteries, are widely used in various scenarios, but their capacity, lifespan, and state-of-health (SOH) are susceptible to numerous influencing factors. To improve the accuracy of state-of-health (SOH) prediction for lithium-ion battery cells, this paper builds up a feature-based analysis framework, and proposes an enhanced predicting model, which integrates the principles of incremental capacity analysis (ICA) and differential voltage analysis (DVA), and the ideas of kernel principal component analysis (KPCA), and Pearson corre

Temporal deep neural network for tactile sensing in artificial finger pulp skin.

Tactile perception plays a vital role in artificial finger pulp skin, especially in regions responsible for grasping and touching tasks, where precise sensing of deformation position and applied force is critical. Conventional demodulation methods often fail to fully leverage temporal correlations in data during the pressing process, limiting the accuracy of tactile demodulation. To address this, we propose a tactile sensing system based on quasi-distributed Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) integrated into artificial finger pulp skin, along with a two-stage hybrid LSTM-Transformer neural network (T
