BACKGROUND: Ludwig's angina is a life-threatening cellulitis that can easily progress to airway compromise. Significant infection, often from periodontal abscesses of the molar teeth, may cause superior and posterior displacement of the tongue compromising patient's airways if not identified and treated promptly. Early recognition and clinical diagnosis, with or without imaging and blood cultures, and antibiotic treatment can help prevent rapid airway compromise, systemic infection and Le Mierre's disease (a rare life-threatening complication). Given that emergency departments are often the fi

Ludwig's angina (LA) is a rapidly progressive cellulitis-causing airway obstruction that can spread through fascial planes to the floor of the mouth and into the mediastinum. Early recognition and treatment are essential for preventing potentially fatal complications. Diagnosis is based on clinical suspicion and confirmed through CT and ultrasound (US). In areas lacking access to imaging modalities, clinicians must rely on a thorough physical examination. Reporting this case is to raise awareness for LA in underserved areas with a higher risk for infection. The case describes a 54-year-old fem

The clinical presentation of Ludwig's angina consists in a severe expanding cellulitis causing swelling of the floor of the mouth, tongue and submandibular region, thus resulting in a possible obstruction of the airway and in a rapid progress in deep neck soft tissue infection and mediastinitis with potentially fatal consequences. Frequently, submandibular cellulitis develops from an acute infection spreading from the lower molar teeth. Mandibular fractures, traumatic laceration of the floor of the mouth, and peritonsillar abscesses are other concomitant clinical features. A case of Ludwig's a

BACKGROUND Ludwig angina is a cellulitis of the soft tissues of the neck and floor of the mouth. It is most commonly caused by Viridans streptococcal species, but other bacterial species have been shown to lead to this severe infection. Clostridium sporogenes is an anaerobic gram-positive, spore-producing bacillus found in soil and the human gastrointestinal tract. This report is of a case of a 49-year-old HIV-positive man with alcoholism and poor dental hygiene leading to a molar abscess who presented with Ludwig angina due to C. sporogenes. CASE REPORT A 49-year-old man presented with severe

Ludwig's angina is a cellulitis involving multiple spaces in the floor of the mouth. It is mainly associated with odontogenic infections and head or facial trauma, which may result in death by asphyxiation due to sudden airway obstruction. By presenting a case of Ludwig's pharyngitis second- ary to middle ear cholesteatoma, it was aimed to alert otolaryngologists to the potential risks and management of this disorder. The patient was a 49-year-old woman with a 40-year history of middle ear cholesteatoma. Ten days prior to her admission, she sustained an ipsilateral punch injury to the tempo-la

Actinomyces is an anaerobic, gram-positive bacillus that is known to cause chronic granulomatous infections. Common risk factors predisposing patients to this life-threatening infection are recent dental procedures, immunosuppression from malignancy, or history of smoking and alcohol use. Actinomyces, commonly found in the normal flora of the oral cavity, is one of the pathogens that can cause Ludwig's angina. Ludwig's angina is diffuse cellulitis and edema of the soft tissues of the neck and floor of the mouth. Cervicofacial actinomyces is an invasive infection that can form life-threatening

RATIONALE: Cervical necrotizing fasciitis (CNF) and descending necrotizing mediastinitis (DNM) are rare forms of complication of Ludwig angina. These potentially lethal infections are difficult to recognize in early stages and are often associated with predisposing factors like diabetes and immunocompromised states. Moreover, IgG hypogammaglobulinemia (hypo-IgG) is considered to be a risk factor of mortality in patients with septic shock; however, it is not routinely quantified in patients with extremely serious infections, particularly in cases with no history or evidence of immunocompromisin

Ludwig's angina is characterized by inflammation of the sublingual and submandibular spaces and is mainly caused by odontogenic infection, which leads to cellulitis of the soft tissues of the floor of the mouth and the neck. This causes asphyxia due to elevation and posterior deviation of the tissues of the floor of the mouth. We report a fatal case of airway obstruction due to Ludwig's angina. A woman in her forties who had no physical complications, but had a mental illness, was undergoing outpatient dental treatment for caries in the first premolar of the left mandible. She was admitted to

Ludwig's angina and odontogenic deep neck space infections represent high-risk scenarios for anaesthesiologists, as airway compromise may develop despite initially preserved spontaneous breathing. We report a 41-year-old woman with no relevant comorbidities who presented with a five-day history of odontogenic right-sided neck swelling, fever, odynophagia, dysphagia, muffled voice, and mild discomfort in the supine position. She was breathing spontaneously on room air with an oxygen saturation of 98%. CT neck demonstrated a right submandibular collection measuring 3 × 0.6 cm, multiple right ste

INTRODUCTION: Ludwig angina is a rare, rapidly spreading submaxillary, submandibular, and sublingual necrotizing life-threatening widespread cellulitis of the soft tissue on the floor of the mouth that can cause fatal complications because of airway obstruction. Currently, there are few published studies assessing the efficacy of superficial cervical plexus block for airway surgery and there is no agreement in the literature about airway management. The published recommendations differ and are based on the authors' own experiences and available resources. This report aimed to provide insight i

BACKGROUND: Ludwig's angina is a rapidly progressive, potentially fatal polymicrobial cellulitis of the submandibular and sublingual spaces, most commonly of odontogenic origin. Airway compromise may develop within hours, and securing the airway represents the most critical initial intervention. Lemierre's syndrome, septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein, may complicate deep neck infections and carries significant morbidity. We present a case in which both conditions converged with an extreme difficult airway scenario, managed according to Difficult Airway Society (DAS) guideline

Ludwig's angina is an infectious process involving submandibular, sublingual, and submental spaces that can rapidly progress to hemodynamic instability and airway obstruction. A 38-year-old unbooked multipara of low socioeconomic status with a poor oral and dental hygiene presented with bilateral submandibular cellulitis and intrauterine fetal demise. She delivered vaginally, and subsequently drainage was done for cellulitis. The report highlights the importance of dental hygiene during pregnancy, lest life-threatening complications like Ludwig's angina occur, complicating the course of pregna

Infectious processes that can cause acute upper airway obstruction in adults include Ludwig's angina, retropharyngeal infection, acute epiglottis, diphtheria, tetanus, and peritonsillar abscess. They are uncommon but potentially lethal. Ludwig's angina in particular quickly progresses to airway obstruction. In most cases, the mainstays of management are antibiotics, surgical drainage, and if necessary, airway maintenance by tracheostomy, cricothyrotomy, or nasotracheal or endotracheal intubation. Hereditary angioneurotic edema causes episodes of laryngeal edema that may lead to suffocation. In

Introduction Acute adult supraglottitis (AAS) is one of the upper airway infections that can potentially cause upper airway obstruction and, if not treated promptly, can be life-threatening. The widespread use of vaccines against Hemophilus influenzae has decreased the incidence of epiglottitis in children, whereas the incidence of AAS is on the rise. We aim to highlight the presentation, diagnosis, and management in AAS with our study. Patients and Methods A retrospective analysis was performed on all patients admitted to a tertiary health care facility surgical intensive care unit (SICU) wh

We report two cases of severe upper airway obstruction caused by supraglottic oedema secondary to adult epiglottitis and Ludwig's angina. In the former case, attempts to intubate with a direct laryngoscope failed but were successful once percutaneous transtracheal jet ventilation (PTJV) had been instituted. In the case with Ludwig's angina, PTJV was employed as a pre-emptive measure and the subsequent tracheal intubation with a direct laryngoscope was performed with unexpected ease. In both cases recognition of the glottic aperture was made feasible with PTJV by virtue of the fact that the hig

A case of fatal Ludwig's angina from an odontogenic origin complicated by chronic lymphocytic leukaemia is presented. This case highlights that death from odontogenic infection is a reality, particularly in those with systemic disease causing immunocompromise. Early surgical intervention, aggressive intravenous antimicrobial therapy and supportive care is imperative.

A retrospective review was conducted of 64 patients with deep neck abscesses. Based on clinical and operative findings, these abscesses were categorized as retropharyngeal abscess (29 patients), parapharyngeal abscess (10 patients), Ludwig's angina (19 patients), or necrotizing cervical fasciitis (six patients). Regional trauma from an ingested foreign body was the cause for 59 per cent of the patients with a retropharyngeal abscess. In 90 per cent of subjects with Ludwig's angina, an odontogenic cause was established; however, in the majority of cases of parapharyngeal abscess (80 per cent) a
