Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is a transboundary viral disease of cattle, including Asian water buffalo and yaks, and certain wild ruminants (e.g., African buffalo, giraffe, wildebeest, eland, and Arabian oryx). It is caused by lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV), a member of the genus Capripoxvirus (family Poxviridae) together with goatpox virus (GTPV) and sheeppox virus (SPPV). High nucleotide identity and serological cross-reactivity among these viruses hinder differential diagnosis. The aim of this study was to develop a Duplex TaqMan-MGB qPCR Assay for Differential Detection of Chinese Epidemic Lu

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is an emerging disease of cattle causing significantly high economic losses. Control of LSD depends on the use of homologous attenuated LSD virus strains isolated originally from South Africa (the Neethling strain). The virus belongs to the genus Capripoxvirus, which includes sheep pox virus and goat pox virus. The present study was conducted to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a new live attenuated LSD vaccine produced by Middle East for Vaccines (MEVAC®) based on the Neethling strain. Tests were performed both in Egypt and Vietnam. Safety was evaluated by inoculat

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) has become the most important animal health problem in India due to high morbidity, mortality and production losses caused by it. A homologous live-attenuated LSD vaccine (Lumpi-ProVacInd) was recently developed by using a local LSD virus (LSDV) strain (LSDV/2019/India/Ranchi) in India which is likely to replace the existing practice of vaccinating cattle with goatpox vaccine. It is essential to differentiate the vaccine and field strains, if a live-attenuated vaccine has been used for control and eradication of the disease. As compared to the prevailing vaccine and fi

Capripoxvirus diseases are listed as reportable diseases by World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). Lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) and sheeppox virus (SPPV), which can only be distinguished by molecular analysis, cause moderately, severe, or sometimes fatal infections in cattle and sheep. Even though vaccines are the most effective way to control the infection, their effectiveness may decrease in some cases. Therefore, it is significant to explore antiviral drugs against these diseases along with the vaccine. This study aimed to investigate the antiviral efficiency of ivermectin (IVM) at

CASE HISTORY: Between August and October 2020, following the monsoon, signs of lumpy skin disease (LSD) were recorded and described in 154 oxen, 34 cows, 13 calves (Bos indicus) and two Asian water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) cows belonging to smallholder farmers in 32 villages located around the Kanha and Bandhavgarh tiger reserves in the state of Madhya Pradesh, central India. Affected animals were subjected to a full clinical examination and detailed findings were recorded in a clinical register. A semi-structured questionnaire was attached to the existing clinical register format to gather i

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) remains a high-impact, transboundary infection of cattle driven by capripoxvirus transmission via mechanical vectors, causing morbidity, production losses, and trade disruption. Following the 2015–2017 Balkan epidemics, coordinated high-coverage vaccination campaigns and movement restrictions substantially reduced disease transmission across southeastern Europe. However, the recent re-emergence of LSD in Western Europe in 2025, including outbreaks reported in Italy, France, and Spain, demonstrates that regional elimination remains fragile and requires sustained prepara

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) has emerged as a threat to cattle production in Asia, and India has been facing LSD epidemics since 2019. Although water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) is susceptible to natural LSDV infection, there have been no confirmed reports of LSDV infection in water buffalo in India. In this study, we investigated suspected cases of LSD in water buffaloes from 12 Indian states and one union territory during 2020-2023. Buffaloes showed mild to moderate clinical disease with fever and nodular skin lesions, but most remained asymptomatic. Eighteen of 177 (10.18%) buffaloes in 12 distri

The South African vaccine strain of lumpy skin disease virus (type SA-Neethling) is currently being developed as a vector for recombinant vaccines of economically important livestock diseases throughout Africa. In this study, the feasibility of using the viral thymidine kinase gene as the site of insertion was investigated and recombinant viruses were evaluated in animal trials. Two separate recombinants were generated and selected for homogeneity expressing either the structural glycoprotein gene of bovine ephemeral fever virus (BEFV) or the two structural glycoprotein genes of Rift Valley fe

Lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) poses a severe threat to global cattle farming, causing significant economic losses. Current laboratory-based methods such as qPCR are accurate procedures; however, they are time-consuming and require sophisticated instrumentation, thus hindering onsite outbreak control. We report a novel magnetic biosensor integrating recombinase-aided amplification (RAA), clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/Cas12a, and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) for ultrasensitive and portable detection of LSDV. The biosensor operates through a syne

Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) is an economically significant viral disease of cattle, widely prevalent across Africa, particularly in sub-Saharan regions. In 2024, Tunisia reported its first outbreak. Understanding the genetic characteristics of lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) and related poxviruses is critical for surveillance and control. Twenty-nine samples from 26 suspected cases were screened for LSDV using qPCR, followed by a High-Resolution Multiplex Melting (HRM) assay. Three representative samples, two LSDV-positive and one bovine papular stomatitis virus (BPSV)-positive, were subjected to

The objective of this study is to present epizootiological data from the lumpy skin disease (LSD) outbreaks in Greece during 2015-16, following the implementation of emergency vaccination and total stamping-out, along with laboratory data regarding the genetic differentiation between field isolates and live attenuated vaccine virus strains. Descriptive geographical chronology analysis was conducted to present the progressive shift of the outbreaks westwards, and at the same time, the absence of further outbreaks in previously affected regional units where high vaccination coverage was achieved

OBJECTIVE: Recently, lumpy skin disease (LSD) has been spread over the Asian, European, and Middle Eastern regions making it a significant hazard to the chain of cattle production, milk production, and human milk consumption, requiring prompt attention. Lumpy skin disease virus has high morbidity and low fatality rates, but its infections have led to terrible economic and agricultural consequences. Although live-attenuated vaccines have been commercialized, farmers in different regions have not taken them well because of the allergic responses against the vaccines. The study aims to develop an

Sheep and goat pox continue to be important livestock diseases that pose a major threat to the livestock industry in many regions in Africa and Asia. Currently, several live attenuated vaccines are available and used in endemic countries to control these diseases. One of these is a partially attenuated strain of lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV), KS-1, which provides cross-protection against both sheep pox and goat pox. However, when used in highly stressed dairy cattle to protect against lumpy skin disease (LSD) the vaccine can cause clinical disease. In order to develop safer vaccines effectiv

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is a common contaminant of Madin-Darby bovine kidney (MDBK) cells as well as fetal calf serum (FCS). It is pathogenic to cattle and regulatory authorities require that veterinary vaccine stocks are free from BVDV. MDBK cells are used in the generation of recombinant lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) and have been used for the growth of LSDV vaccines. This paper describes how vaccine stocks can be cleared of BVDV by passage through an avian host, nonpermissive to BVDV, but permissive to LSDV. LSDV vaccine stocks were shown to be cleared of BVDV after passage on

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is a rapidly expanding transboundary vector-borne disease threatening livestock systems across Asia, with increasing risk of introduction into previously unaffected regions such as South Korea. This study developed an integrated, spatially explicit framework to assess the plausibility, timing and source-region structure of LSD virus (LSDV) introduction via windborne dispersal of infected arthropod vectors. Maximum Entropy models based on climatic, environmental, and topographic variables were used to determine habitat suitability for four major vector families (Culex s

Due to the lack of timely vaccine prevention and effective drug treatment, lumpy skin disease is increasingly becoming a global epidemic, including in China. There is an urgent need to explore the pathogenic mechanism of lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) and develop practical therapeutic approaches. The present study provides concrete evidence for the simultaneous induction and activation of nuclear ATM-mediated double-strand break and ATR kinase-dependent single-strand break signaling cascades during LSDV replication in the cytoplasm. Specific drug-inhibitory experiments targeting ATM and ATR k

BACKGROUND: Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is endemic in Egypt despite the Egyptian authorities' annual mass vaccination of cattle with sheeppox vaccine (Veterinary Serum and Vaccine Research Institute, Egypt), and the LSD virus (LSDV) continues to thrive practically every summer. The disease has a huge economic impact on the trade of the animal and its by-product.
AIM: This paper study the molecular characterization of LSDV strains that have been circulating in Sharkia Governorate, Egypt, for three successive years (2018, 2019, and 2020).
METHODS: A total of 61 specimens (26 skin nodules and 35 o

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is a highly infectious disease of cattle caused by a virus of the Poxviridae family, genus Capripoxvirus. The present study was designed to determine the prognostic ability of serum IL-6 in LSD using a binary logistic regression model at baseline sampling. A 17-day cohort study was conducted on a recent outbreak of LSD among cattle in the Lodhran District of Punjab, Pakistan. Infected cattle were divided into two categories based on their clinical status on day 17 as recovered (n = 33) or unrecovered (n = 17). Nodular lesions and scab specimens (n = 50) were used for t

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) emerged in Bangladesh in mid-2019, leading to great economic losses for cattle farmers. This study describes the recent occurrence of the LSDV in Bangladesh and examines the clinical manifestation of the disease in local cattle breeds, characteristic epidemiological features, and pathological findings in affected animals. In addition, a full-genome sequencing of two local LSDV isolates was carried out. A total of 565 animals from 88 households were investigated, and 165 samples (skin lesions, saliva, nasal discharge, feces, and milk) were collected for virus detection.
