Goji (Lycium barbarum L.) leaf tea (LBLT) has gained popularity among consumers owing to its pleasant aroma. Selecting optimal Goji cultivars for tea processing is critical for enhancing the quality of LBLT. This study investigated the aroma characteristics of Goji leaf white tea (LBLWT) and green tea (LBLGT) prepared from 25 Goji lines. LBLWT emitted woody, floral and fruity aromas, while LBLGT exhibited a distinct roasted corn aroma. The integrated application of variable importance in projection, odour activity value and partial least-squares regression analyses led to the identification of

In Alzheimer's disease (AD), amyloid β deposition-induced hippocampal synaptic dysfunction generally begins prior to neuronal degeneration and memory impairment. Lycium barbarum extracts (LBE) have been demonstrated to be neuroprotective in various animal models of neurodegeneration. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of LBE on the synapse loss in AD through the avenue of the retina in a triple transgenic mouse model of AD (3xTg-AD). We fed 3xTg-AD mice with low (200 mg/kg) or high (2 g/kg) dose hydrophilic LBE daily for 2 months from the starting age of 4- or 6-month-old. For

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been identified as a critical gaseous signaling chemical. Herein, the effects of H2S treatment on the postharvest goji berries and antioxidant enzyme activities were determined. H2S application delayed the decay index, loss of firmness, color, flavor, and total sugars and loss of total protein, betaine and ascorbic acid in goji berries during postharvest storage. Meanwhile, H2S noticeably reduced the MDA, H2O2, and O2- accumulation. Additionally, it was shown that H2S increased the activity of catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), peroxidase (POD), glutathione

Biosynthesized selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) have attracted much attention because of their unique physical, chemical, and biological properties. The microbial reduction of selenium salts to SeNPs has great potential, while there is a lack of elite strains. In this study, we explored the reduction of Na2SeO3 by Streptomyces avermitilis into SeNPs. The colonies and hyphae of the strain and the synthesized SeNPs were characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and

This study investigated the effects of Goji berry (Lycium barbarum) dietary supplementation during pregnancy on insulin sensitivity of rabbit does and their offspring. Starting from two months before the artificial insemination, 75 New Zealand White does were fed only commercial standard diet (C) or supplemented with 1% (G1) and 3% (G3) of Goji berries. Their offspring received a standard diet but kept the nomenclature of the mother's group. Fasting and intravenous glucose tolerance test-derived indices were estimated at 21 days of pregnancy on rabbit does and at 90 days of age on the offsprin

Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP) have been shown to play a variety of immune-modulatory functions which include activation of T and B cells. Follicular helper T (Tfh) cells are now recognized as a subset of helper T cells which regulate the multiple stages of B cell maturation and function. In our current study, we found that LBP were able to activate CXCR5+PD-1+ Tfh cells and induce IL-21 secretion. At the same time LBP also promoted the formation of germinal centers (GC) and production of GL-7+B220+GC B cells. LBP as an adjuvant could increase generation of rAd5VP1-induced Tfh cells. Ou

Lycium barbarum polysaccharides are major bioactive constituents of Lycium barbarum fruit and are widely recognized for antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and intestinal protective activities. Selenium nanoparticles are considered a safer selenium formulation than conventional inorganic selenium because they generally provide improved bioavailability and reduced toxicity. In this study, Lycium barbarum polysaccharide-stabilized selenium nanoparticles were prepared under mild conditions, characterized, and evaluated for antibacterial, antibiofilm, and antidiarrhoeal activities. The optimized nanopa

To preclude the loss of glycan moieties inherent to the Sevag-mediated deproteination of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP), this study employed controlled alkaline hydrolysis instead of the classical chloroform-butanol precipitation, subsequently implemented a gradient ethanol-precipitation scheme. This strategy yielded an arabinogalactan fraction and a novel polysaccharide fraction (ALBP-80) from Lycium barbarum. The ALBP-80 was further purified by Bio-gel P100 column chromatography to obtain homogeneous fraction (ALBGP-80). Through chemical methods (monosaccharide composition, methylatio

Endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) is a significant pathological mechanism in Parkinson's disease (PD), and prolonged ERS can ultimately lead to cellular apoptosis. This study aimed to investigate the neuroprotective effects of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP) against MPP⁺-induced damage in primary neurons. Mouse primary dopaminergic neurons were treated with MPP⁺ for 24 h to establish PD cell model, and then treated with LBP for another 24 h. Western blot analysis revealed that, compared to the Control group, MPP⁺ treatment induced primary neuron ERS and apoptosis, manifested by upregula

Lycium barbarum leaf (LBL) is rich in phenolic compounds; however, its industrial utilization remains limited due to suboptimal extraction methods. This study employed ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) in conjunction with deep eutectic solvents (DESs) to extract LBL phenolics. Among eleven tested DESs, choline chloride-lactic acid (ChCl-LA) demonstrated the highest extraction efficiency. A phenolic yield of 18.62 mg/g was achieved under the optimized conditions. The obtained LBL extract (LLE) was further enriched using screened XAD7HP resin. The enriched LLE contained 15 main phenolics. The

The extraction of bioactive compounds from natural plants has received considerable attention, with deep eutectic solvents (DESs) being considered as a novel kind of green solvent in the extraction processes. To extract bioactive ingredients from natural plants, a series of DESs was synthesized by combining a newly Gemini ionic liquid (IL), C3(MIM)2Br2 with ethylene glycol (EG) in various molar ratios (1:3, 1:4, 1:5, and 1:6). The structure of the C3(MIM)2Br2/EG(1:6) system was characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, as well as 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectro

Polysaccharides have been suggested to ameliorate metabolic diseases. However, their differential colitis-mitigating effects in mouse models with different colony structures remain poorly understood. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of polysaccharides from Lycium barbarum (LBP), sunflower (SP), and yam (YP) on colitis in C57BL/6 J (B6) mice born via vaginal delivery (VD) and in both caesarean section (CS)- and VD-born Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) mice. LBP was mainly composed of glucose (30.2 %), galactose (27.5 %), and arabinose (26.9 %). The main components of SP and YP w
