Studies on a widely-recognized snail model species (Lymnaea stagnalis) provide further evidence that vertebrate steroids do not have a hormonal role in the reproduction of mollusks.

Experiments were carried out to determine whether, as with other mollusks that have been studied, the snail, Lymnaea stagnalis, can absorb, esterify and store vertebrate steroids that are present in the water. We also carried out experiments to determine whether neural tissues of the snail could be immunohistochemically stained with an antibody to human aromatase (a key enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of testosterone [T] to 17β-estradiol [E2]); and, if so, to determine the significance of such staining. Previous studies on other mollusks have reported such staining and have proposed this

Prevalence of Fasciola hepatica in the intermediate host Lymnaea truncatula detected by real time TaqMan PCR in populations from 70 Swiss farms with cattle husbandry.

Bovine fasciolosis is an economically important parasitic disease. Quantitative real time PCR was utilized to determine the prevalence of Fasciola hepatica in the snail intermediate host Lymnaea truncatula from 70 selected, infected Swiss cattle farms, and to gain information on the infection risk to the definitive host. Snails from 130 habitats (36 streams, 21 wells, 24 drainage ditches, 33 spring swamps, 14 reeds, 1 drainage shaft and 1 pond) originating from 71 dairy cow pastures, 39 pastures for young stock, 14 hay fields and 6 dry cow pastures were collected. Of these, 51 populations were

Lymnaeid Snail Vectors of Fascioliasis, Including the First Finding of Lymnaea neotropica in Ecuador, Assessed by Ribosomal DNA Sequencing in the Southern Zone Close to the Peru Border.

PURPOSE: Fascioliasis is a freshwater snail-borne zoonotic trematodiasis of high pathogenicity and wide veterinary repercussions. In South America, moreover, it causes serious public health problems, with high human infection rates in Andean countries. Ecuador offers a worrying risky scenario due to its physiography, including many human infection reports and animal endemicity throughout its Andean highlands. METHODS: Endemic areas with increasing animal fascioliasis were surveyed for lymnaeid snails in the province of Loja, southern Ecuador, close to the border of Peru, the country known to

Characterisation of Lymnaea cubensis, L. viatrix and L. neotropica n. sp., the main vectors of Fasciola hepatica in Latin America, by analysis of their ribosomal and mitochondrial DNA.

Although, in the endemic areas throughout the world, human fascioliasis presents varying patterns in its epidemiology, the species of lymnaeid snail that act as intermediate hosts and vectors are always crucial in the transmission of the causative parasites. Species in the Galba/Fossaria group of snails, such as Lymnaea cubensis, L. viatrix var. A ventricosa, L. viatrix var. B elongata and Galba truncatula, appear to be frequently involved in the transmission of Fasciola hepatica in Central and South America, although specific classification within this morphologically and anatomically confusi

DNA multigene characterization of Fasciola hepatica and Lymnaea neotropica and its fascioliasis transmission capacity in Uruguay, with historical correlation, human report review and infection risk analysis.

BACKGROUND: Fascioliasis is a pathogenic disease transmitted by lymnaeid snails and recently emerging in humans, in part due to effects of climate changes, anthropogenic environment modifications, import/export and movements of livestock. South America is the continent presenting more human fascioliasis hyperendemic areas and the highest prevalences and intensities known. These scenarios appear mainly linked to altitude areas in Andean countries, whereas lowland areas of non-Andean countries, such as Uruguay, only show sporadic human cases or outbreaks. A study including DNA marker sequencing

DNA sequence characterisation and phylogeography of Lymnaea cousini and related species, vectors of fascioliasis in northern Andean countries, with description of L. meridensis n. sp. (Gastropoda: Lymnaeidae).

BACKGROUND: Livestock fascioliasis is a problem throughout Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela, mainly in Andean areas where the disease also appears to affect humans. Transmission patterns and epidemiological scenarios of liver fluke infection have shown to differ according to the lymnaeid vector snail species involved. These Andean countries present the vectors Lymnaea cousini, L. bogotensis and L. ubaquensis, unknown in the rest of Latin America. An exhaustive combined haplotype study of these species is performed by means of DNA sequencing of the nuclear ribosomal 18S RNA gene, ITS-2 and ITS-1

A Comparative Study of Cell Specific Effects of Systemic and Volatile Anesthetics on Identified Motor Neurons and Interneurons of Lymnaea stagnalis (L.), Both in the Isolated Brain and in Single Cell Culture.

1. A comparative descriptive analysis of systemic (sodium pentobarbital, sodium thiopentone, ketamine) and volatile (halothane, isoflurane, enflurane) general anesthetics revealed important differences in the neuronal responses of identified motor neurons and interneurons in the isolated central nervous system (CNS) and cultured identified neurons in single cell culture of Lymnaea stagnalis (L.). 2. At high enough concentrations all anesthetics eventually caused cessation of spontaneous or evoked action potentials, but volatile anesthetics were much faster acting. Halothane at low concentratio

A faunistic survey of snails and their infection with digenean trematode cercariae in Bandar-e Anzali at the littoral of the Caspian Sea.

Trematodes are known as a diverse group of endogenous parasites, which snails as their intermediate hosts can dramatically affect parasite transmission dynamics. Snails play a key role in life cycles of digenean trematode. However, there has not been much faunistic surveys in terms of snails' distribution in Iran. The current study was aimed to identify snail's fauna and their current geographic distribution in four regions of Guilan province, Iran. Several species of snails (land and freshwater snails) were obtained from 4 different areas (2018-2019), and then samples were separately transfer

Morphological and molecular characterization of lymnaeid snails and their potential role in transmission of Fasciola spp. in Vietnam.

Freshwater snails of the family Lymnaeidae play an important role in the transmission of fascioliasis worldwide. In Vietnam, 2 common lymnaeid species, Lymnaea swinhoei and Lymnaea viridis, can be recognized on the basis of morphology, and a third species, Lymnaea sp., is known to exist. Recent studies have raised controversy about their role in transmission of Fasciola spp. because of confusion in identification of the snail hosts. The aim of this study is, therefore, to clarify the identities of lymnaeid snails in Vietnam by a combination of morphological and molecular approaches. The molecu

Occurrence of a sibling species complex within neotropical lymnaeids, snail intermediate hosts of fascioliasis.

The delimitation of cryptic species within the genus Lymnaea, which are the main vectors of fascioliasis, remains a topic of controversy. An analysis of genetic variability based on 12 enzyme loci revealed different fixed alleles at 9 loci between two sympatric samples of Lymnaea viatrix at the type locality in Lima, Peru. The absence of heterozygotes within this locality indicates the presence of isolated populations or cryptic species within L. viatrix. Significant genetic differences were also found between these two L. viatrix samples from Lima and other populations of L. viatrix in South

Distribution of Lymnaeidae (Mollusca: Pulmonata), intermediate snail hosts of Fasciola hepatica in Venezuela.

An extensive malacological survey was carried out between 2005-2009 in order to clarify the exact number of lymnaeid species which may be intermediate hosts of Fasciola hepatica in Venezuela. Four species were discovered during this survey, including two local species: Lymnaea cubensis and Lymnaea cousini and two exotic species: Lymnaea truncatula and Lymnaea columella. The most common local species was L. cubensis which was found at 16 out of the 298 sampling sites. This species has a large distribution area throughout the Northern part of Venezuela and was encountered from sea level to an al

Differential effects of general anaesthetics on identified molluscan neurones in situ and in culture.

1. The only unifying principle of general anaesthesia is that general anaesthetics interact with membrane components and no single cellular mechanism appears to explain their widespread effects in the central nervous system. 2. The gastropod mollusc, Lymnaea stagnalis, provides an excellent model system for studies on general anaesthetics because it has large, uniquely identifiable nerve cells. Several of these cells are interneurones with identified neurotransmitters and monosynaptic connections to other cells. 3. Recent work on Lymnaea neurones suggests that calcium currents are depressed by

Functional morphology of the neuropeptidergic light-yellow-cell system in pulmonate snails.

The light yellow neuropeptidergic cell system of the basommatophoran snail Lymnaea stagnalis is homologous to the R3-R14 system of the opisthobranch Aplysia californica, and produces three different neuropeptides. Systems homologous to the light yellow cells of Lymnaea stagnalis have been investigated morphologically in two Basommatophora (Lymnaea ovata, Bulinus truncatus) and three Stylommatophora (Helix aspersa, Cepaea nemoralis, Deroceras reticulatum). To this end, an antibody to synthetic light-yellow-cell peptide-II and oligonucleotides to mRNAs encoding parts of peptide-I and peptide-III

Neuron-specific monoclonal antibodies raised against the low molecular weight fraction of a brain homogenate of the pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis immunoreact with neurons in the central nervous system of the cockroach, the guppy, the wall lizard, the rat and man.

Monoclonal antibodies were raised against the small molecular weight fraction (less than 30 kilodaltons) of an extract from 200 central nervous systems (CNS) of the freshwater snail Lymnaea stagnalis. In a first screening step the supernatants of the 297 emerging hybridomas were immunocytochemically tested on sections of the CNS of L. stagnalis. Sixty-six appeared to produce neuron-specific antibodies, five reacted with non-neuronal elements. In a second step the 66 neuron-specific antibodies were tested on sections of the CNS of the guppy. Three reacted positively. In the third step the three

Susceptibility of freshwater snails to the amphistome Calicophoron microbothrium and the influence of the species on susceptibility of Bulinus tropicus to Schistosoma haematobium and Schistosoma mattheei infections.

The susceptibility of Bulinus tropicus, B. globosus, Biomphalana pfeifferi, Lymnaea natalensis, and Melanoides tuberculata to Calicophoron microbothrium was examined. Bulinus tropicus had the highest prevalence (65.0%), followed by B. pfeifferi (37.5%), B. globosus (6.8%), and M. tuberculata (5.9%). Lymnaea natalensis was refractory to infection. Bulinus tropicus snails infected with C. microbothrium alone or coinfected with either Schistosoma haematobium or S. mattheei 0, 7, 14, and 21 days after exposure to C. microbothrium produced C. microbothrium cercariae only.

[The water-cress pools in connection with cases of human fasciolasis in Limousin, France. Experimental studies of Trematode snails and their biological control (author's transl)].

Experimental studies on 16 water-cress pools with cases of human fasciolasis in Limousin were undertaken. Two species of snails, Lymnaea glabra and L. truncatula are here trematode hosts. L. glabra alone lives in 5 pools. The introduction of Zonitoides nitidus -- predatory snail -- without vegetation modification produces a progressive elimination of Lymnaea in 3 years. The author insists on the use of determine the trematode host-aptitude of L. glabra and its limits when the two species -- L. glabra and L. truncatula -- live in the same habitats.

Epidemiology of fascioliasis in the Koshi hills of Nepal.

Lymnaea auricularia race rufescens and Lymnaea luteola were shown to transmit F. gigantica in the Koshi hills of Nepal. The ecology of the snails was studied at nine different habitats in Hattikharka panchayat, the highest numbers occurring immediately after the end of the monsoon. Mature F. gigantica infections in the snails were detected from May to August and again in November. The prevalence of the infection in cattle was highest during the summer monsoon and in January and February. A control programme for fascioliasis based on these findings is suggested which requires that cattle be tre

How a single gene twists a snail.

The gastropod Lymnaea has unique features, that is, chirality, sinistrality, or dextrality, is displayed externally as well as internally, and is hereditary, being determined by a single-locus that functions maternally at the very early embryonic stage. Both sinistral and dextral snails exist in nature with the dextral one being dominant. Thus, the genus Lymnaea is an ideal target for studying chiromorphogenesis. This article gives a brief overview of the current state of research on chiromorphogenesis of Lymnaea (L.) stagnalis, mainly focusing on our own studies. Breeding experiments were per
