OBJECTIVES: Lymphedema is neglected in medical education, and a review on healthcare practitioners' (HCPs) knowledge is necessary to shed light on gaps and to provide evidence for establishing educational programs on lymphedema.
METHODS: This systematic review was performed based on the PRISMA guideline in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases. There was no limitation on the type of lymphedema or HCPs. The quality assessment was performed based on QATSDD. Data regarding study characteristics, questionnaire context, and findings of the study were summarized from each art

Local edema is a common symptom in many skin diseases, especially in inflammatory or allergic reactions. Diseases of the lymphatic system can also lead to edema with specific changes in the skin. Lymphedema is the result of primary genetic changes, which can also occur in the context of syndromes and can be traced to abnormal development of the lymphatic system. Secondary lymphedema usually develops after surgery, inflammatory reactions or chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). The microfiltrate that is transported in the tissue in healthy individuals via the lymphatic system is rich in proteins

The epidemiological classifications of primary lymphedema based on age at emergence and the severity of the edema are fundamental to the transmission of information about this condition. In the secondary type, the lymphatic system is intact at birth but is injured during the course of life, causing a deficiency that leads to lymphedema. However, years of clinical experience and progress in treatment suggest new classifications to assist in the therapeutic planning of each patient. In clinical practice, we have observed inappropriate treatments that can cause more harm than good. Such observati

Scrotal elephantiasis is defined as an increase in the scrotal volume which can reach a very large size. This study involved O.H, a married man aged 70 years, father of 4 children, farmer, native of and resident in Agadir (south of Morocco). Symptoms started 7 years before when scrotal edema and then an edema in both feet and legs gradually increasing in volume occurred. Physical examination showed scrotal elephantiasis with a circumference measured 80 cm and elephantiasis in both legs and feet. Locoregional assessment was based on pelvic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The patient was sched

RATIONALE: Mutations in GJC2 and GJA1, encoding Cxs (connexins) 47 and 43, respectively, are linked to lymphedema, but the underlying mechanisms are unknown. Because efficient lymph transport relies on the coordinated contractions of lymphatic muscle cells (LMCs) and their electrical coupling through Cxs, Cx-related lymphedema is proposed to result from dyssynchronous contractions of lymphatic vessels.
OBJECTIVE: To determine which Cx isoforms in LMCs and lymphatic endothelial cells are required for the entrainment of lymphatic contraction waves and efficient lymph transport.

Limb lymphedemas are due to a malfunction of the lymphatic system responsible for lymph stasis in the interstitial tissue and secondarily to an increase in the volume of the affected limb. They are divided into primary lymphedema (PL) and secondary lymphedema (SL). SLs develop most frequently in lower limbs after breast cancer treatment while lymphedemas are either secondary (iatrogenic or infectious) or primitive, most often sporadic, sometimes familial or they can be part of syndromes resulting in malformations and/or more complex genetics in upper limbs. The diagnosis of lymphedema is essen

Lymphedema is a chronic and progressive disorder resulting from impaired lymphatic system function. In developed countries, upper extremity lymphedema is mainly the consequence of breast cancer surgery in which axillary lymph node dissection and radiation alter upper extremity lymphatic flow. Diagnosis of lymphedema is made clinically. Nevertheless, there are numerous diagnostic tools available for disease staging. Recently, a new technology namely magnetic resonance lymphangiography has emerged in the medical field to assist in both diagnosis and management. There are non-surgical and surgica

Lymphedema affects up to 1 in 6 patients who undergo treatment for a solid tumor in the United States. Its prevalence has increased as more effective oncologic therapies have improved patient survival, but there remains no definitive cure. Recent research has elucidated new details in the pathogenesis of the disease and has demonstrated that it is fundamentally an immunologic process that ultimately results in inflammation, fibroadipose deposition, impaired lymphangiogenesis, and dysfunctional lymphatic pumping. These findings have allowed for the development of novel medical and surgical ther

Lymphedema is a localized form of tissue swelling resulting from excessive retention of lymphatic fluid in the interstitial compartment and caused by impaired lymphatic drainage. Lymphedema is classified as primary or secondary. Primary lymphedema is caused by developmental lymphatic vascular anomalies. Secondary lymphedema is acquired and arises as a result of an underlying systemic disease, trauma, or surgery. We performed PubMed and Google Scholar searches of the English-language literature (1966-2017) using the terms lymphedema, cancer-related lymphedema, and lymphatic complications. Relev

BACKGROUND: Secondary lymphedema is a dreaded complication that sometimes occurs after treatment of malignancies. Management of lymphedema has historically focused on conservative measures, including physical therapy and compression garments. More recently, surgery has been used for the treatment of secondary lymphedema.
METHODS: This article represents the experience and treatment approaches of 5 surgeons experienced in lymphatic surgery and includes a literature review in support of the techniques and algorithms presented.
RESULTS: This review provides the reader with current thoughts and

Lymphedema results from impaired lymphatic transport with increased limb volume. Lymphedema are divided in primary and secondary forms. Upper-limb lymphedema secondary to breast cancer treatment is the most frequent in France. Primary lymphedema is sporadic, rarely familial or associated with complex malformative or genetic disorders. Diagnosis of lymphedema is mainly clinical and lymphoscintigraphy is useful in primary form to assess precisely the lymphatic function of the two limbs. Erysipelas (cellulitis) is the main complication, but psychological or functional discomfort may occur through

Classical Kaposi sarcoma (KS) usually appears on lower extremities accompanied or preceded by local lymphedema. However, the development in areas of chronic lymphedema of the arms following mastectomy, mimicking a Stewart-Treves syndrome, has rarely been described. We report an 81-year-old woman who developed multiple, erythematous to purple tumors, located on areas of post mastectomy lymphedema. Histopathological examination evidenced several dermal nodules formed by spindle-shaped cells that delimitated slit-like vascular spaces with some red cell extravasation. Immunohistochemically, the hu

BACKGROUND: Despite of all the problems caused by lymphedema, this disease continues to affect millions of people worldwide. Thus, the identification of the most efficacious forms of treatment is necessary.
AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate a novel intensive outpatient treatment for leg lymphedema.
METHODS: Twenty-three legs of 19 patients were evaluated in a prospective randomized study. The inclusion criteria were patients with Grade II and III lymphedema, where the difference, measured by volumetry, between the affected limb below the knee and the healthy limb was greater than 1.

OBJECTIVES: Penile and scrotal lymphedema produces a monstrous deformity with psychological impact and occasionally extreme mental anguish. The penis is buried in the scrotal tissue, deformed, thickened, edematous, and curved. The scrotum changes to a great, very thick, hard skin mass, sometimes cracked, exudative, and fetid. Erection and sexual intercourse are very difficult or impossible, and the scrotal enlargement interferes with walking. To report a new case of male external genitalia lymphedema.
METHODS/RESULTS: We present a technical variation of the surgical treatment of penile-scrota

Since the late 1800's, the familial occurrence of peripheral lymphedema has been well-documented in Milroy and Meige syndromes. However, the presence of lymphedema in many other hereditary dysmorphic syndromes has not been fully appreciated. In order to establish more standardized and detailed clinical phenotypic criteria as the basis for rational classification and for greater precision in screening and genetic linkage studies, we conducted a comprehensive literature search and review of OMIM-identified and non-identified hereditary syndromes in which lymphedema was reported as a feature.
