Machine Learning based Heart Murmur Detection and Classification.

Cardiovascular diseases rank among the leading causes of mortality worldwide and the early identification of diseases is of paramount importance. This work focuses on developing a novel machine learning-based framework for early detection and classification of heart murmurs by analysing phonocardiogram signals. Our heart murmur detection and classification pipeline encompasses three classification settings. We first develop a set of methods based on transfer learning to determine the existence of heart murmurs and categorize them as present, absent, or unknown. If a murmur is present it will b

Entry point of machine learning in axial spondyloarthritis.

Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) is a globally prevalent and challenging autoimmune disease. Characterised by insidious onset and slow progression, the absence of specific clinical manifestations and biomarkers often leads to misdiagnosis, thereby complicating early detection and diagnosis of axSpA. Furthermore, the high heterogeneity of axSpA, its complex pathogenesis and the lack of specific drugs means that traditional classification standards and treatment guidelines struggle to meet the demands of personalised treatment. Recently, machine learning (ML) has seen rapid advancements in the me

Machine learning for lumbar and pelvis kinematics clustering.

Clustering algorithms such as k-means and agglomerative hierarchical clustering (HCA) may provide a unique opportunity to analyze time-series kinematic data. Here we present an approach for determining number of clusters and which clustering algorithm to use on time-series lumbar and pelvis kinematic data. Cluster evaluation measures such as silhouette coefficient, elbow method, Dunn Index, and gap statistic were used to evaluate the quality of decision making. The result show that multiple clustering evaluation methods should be used to determine the ideal number of clusters and algorithm sui

Preinterventional Third-Molar Assessment Using Robust Machine Learning.

Machine learning (ML) models, especially deep neural networks, are increasingly being used for the analysis of medical images and as a supporting tool for clinical decision-making. In this study, we propose an artificial intelligence system to facilitate dental decision-making for the removal of mandibular third molars (M3M) based on 2-dimensional orthopantograms and the risk assessment of such a procedure. A total of 4,516 panoramic radiographic images collected at the Center of Dental Medicine at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, were used for training the ML model. After image preparat

Machine learning coarse-grained potentials of protein thermodynamics.

A generalized understanding of protein dynamics is an unsolved scientific problem, the solution of which is critical to the interpretation of the structure-function relationships that govern essential biological processes. Here, we approach this problem by constructing coarse-grained molecular potentials based on artificial neural networks and grounded in statistical mechanics. For training, we build a unique dataset of unbiased all-atom molecular dynamics simulations of approximately 9 ms for twelve different proteins with multiple secondary structure arrangements. The coarse-grained models a

Acoustic analysis in stuttering: a machine-learning study.

BACKGROUND: Stuttering is a childhood-onset neurodevelopmental disorder affecting speech fluency. The diagnosis and clinical management of stuttering is currently based on perceptual examination and clinical scales. Standardized techniques for acoustic analysis have prompted promising results for the objective assessment of dysfluency in people with stuttering (PWS). OBJECTIVE: We assessed objectively and automatically voice in stuttering, through artificial intelligence (i.e., the support vector machine - SVM classifier). We also investigated the age-related changes affecting voice in stutte

A Machine Learning Model to Predict Diuretic Resistance.

BACKGROUND: Volume overload is a common complication encountered in hospitalized patients, and the mainstay of therapy is diuresis. Unfortunately, the diuretic response in some individuals is inadequate despite a typical dose of loop diuretics, a phenomenon called diuretic resistance. An accurate prediction model that predicts diuretic resistance using predosing variables could inform the right diuretic dose for a prospective patient. METHODS: Two large, deidentified, publicly available, and independent intensive care unit (ICU) databases from the United States were used-the Medical Informati

Machine Learning for Pediatric Echocardiographic Mitral Regurgitation Detection.

BACKGROUND: Echocardiography-based screening for valvular disease in at-risk asymptomatic children can result in early diagnosis. These screening programs, however, are resource intensive and may not be feasible in many resource-limited settings. Automated echocardiographic diagnosis may enable more widespread echocardiographic screening, early diagnosis, and improved outcomes. In this feasibility study, the authors sought to build a machine learning model capable of identifying mitral regurgitation (MR) on echocardiography. METHODS: Echocardiograms were labeled by clip for view and by frame

MLIMC: Machine Learning-Based Implicit-Solvent Monte Carlo.

Monte Carlo (MC) methods are important computational tools for molecular structure optimizations and predictions. When solvent effects are explicitly considered, MC methods become very expensive due to the large degree of freedom associated with the water molecules and mobile ions. Alternatively implicit-solvent MC can largely reduce the computational cost by applying a mean field approximation to solvent effects and meanwhile maintains the atomic detail of the target molecule. The two most popular implicit-solvent models are the Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) model and the Generalized Born (GB) model

Machine Learning for Real-Time Heart Disease Prediction.

Heart-related anomalies are among the most common causes of death worldwide. Patients are often asymptomatic until a fatal event happens, and even when they are under observation, trained personnel is needed in order to identify a heart anomaly. In the last decades, there has been increasing evidence of how Machine Learning can be leveraged to detect such anomalies, thanks to the availability of Electrocardiograms (ECG) in digital format. New developments in technology have allowed to exploit such data to build models able to analyze the patterns in the occurrence of heart beats, and spot anom

Quantum Machine Learning Algorithms for Drug Discovery Applications.

The growing quantity of public and private data sets focused on small molecules screened against biological targets or whole organisms provides a wealth of drug discovery relevant data. This is matched by the availability of machine learning algorithms such as Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Deep Neural Networks (DNN) that are computationally expensive to perform on very large data sets with thousands of molecular descriptors. Quantum computer (QC) algorithms have been proposed to offer an approach to accelerate quantum machine learning over classical computer (CC) algorithms, however with s
