BACKGROUND: Several lines of evidence suggest that major depressive disorder is associated with deficits in gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) inhibitory neurotransmission. Transcranial magnetic stimulation represents a noninvasive technique to measure cortical inhibition. In this study, we endeavored to measure cortical inhibition in medicated patients with treatment resistant major depressive disorder (TRD), unmedicated patients with major depressive disorder, and medicated euthymic patients with a history of major depressive disorder and compare them with healthy subjects.

Fatigue and sleepiness (hypersomnia) are symptoms that are highly prevalent in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Individuals who complain of fatigue but do not have diagnosable depression are at a higher risk for developing MDD later in life than individuals who do not complain of fatigue. Fatigue and sleepiness also appear to be particularly difficult to treat, as they are often encountered as residual symptoms among MDD patients who have remitted following treatment with standard antidepressants. There are 3 main approaches for addressing fatigue and sleepiness in depression: fi

BACKGROUND: We aimed to examine the hypotheses that major depression is aetiologically heterogeneous consisting of a mixture of 'genetic' and 'non-genetic' forms or, alternatively, a mixture of one form that is 'pure' depression and another that has a familial relationship with alcohol dependency or other disorders.
METHOD: One hundred and eleven twin pairs (44 monozygotic, 67 dizygotic) where the proband had received treatment for DSM-IV major depression were ascertained via a hospital register. Family history information on parents and siblings was obtained from the proband, co-twin or both

OBJECTIVE: To test a priori hypotheses that miscarrying women are at increased risk for a first or recurrent episode of major depressive disorder in the 6 months following loss and that this increased risk is greater for childless women, women with prior reproductive loss, and women aged 35 years or older; and to evaluate whether risk varies by time of gestation or by attitude toward the pregnancy.
DESIGN: Cohort study.
SETTING: The miscarriage cohort consisted of women attending a medical center for a spontaneous abortion (n=229); the comparison group was a population-based cohort of women

All night EEG sleep recordings were compared in patients with dysthymia and major depressive disorder. Subjects were selected according to DSM-IV and underwent 2 weeks of treatment with placebo before the sleep evaluations. All patients with major depressive disorder were classified as nonmelancholic and belonged to the recurrent subtype, without full interepisode recovery. Patients with major depressive disorder have a shorter duration of total sleep time, a longer sleep latency and a lower sleep efficiency. However, similar sleep architecture and REM sleep characteristics were found in the t

Mixed anxiety-depressive disorder (MADD) is a new diagnostic category defining patients who suffer from both anxiety and depressive symptoms of limited and equal intensity accompanied by at least some autonomic features. Patients do not meet the criteria for specific anxiety or depressive disorders. The emergence of the symptoms is independent of stressful life events. There are many issues presently under investigation about the validity of this clinical entity. In this study, a group of 29 patients with MADD was compared with a group of 31 patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) to ass

Personality disorders are much more common among depressive patients than among normal people. Until now, little research has been conducted into the prevalence of personality disorders among patients with both major depression and dysthymia (double depression). The subject of this study is whether depressive patients with dysthymia have more personality disorders than those with no dysthymia. The Vragenlijst voor Kenmerken van de Persoonlijkheid (a Dutch self-report based on the International Personality Disorder Examination) was completed for 211 outpatients with major depression. BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is not recognized as an indication for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). However, research indicates promise for this treatment modality. To elucidate the effects of ECT for treating PTSD, prospective research is needed. The first step in assessing the feasibility of such research is to determine if many patients being treated with ECT have comorbid PTSD. This study examined the PTSD comorbidity rates and compared demographic data among patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) who were treated with ECT vs patients with MDD who were not treat

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder are prevalent and debilitating psychiatric disorders that are difficult to distinguish, as their diagnosis is based on behavioural observations and subjective symptoms. Quantitative protein profile analysis might help to objectively distinguish between these disorders and increase our understanding of their pathophysiology. Thus, this study was conducted to compare the peripheral protein profiles between the two disorders.
METHODS: Serum samples were collected from 18 subjects with major depressive disorder and 15 subjects with bipola

BACKGROUND: We used network analyses to examine symptoms that may play a role in the co-occurrence of social anxiety disorder (SAD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). Whereas latent variable models examine relations among latent constructs, network analyses have the advantage of characterizing direct relations among the symptoms themselves.
METHOD: We conducted network modeling on symptoms of social anxiety and depression in a clinical sample of 130 women who met criteria for SAD, MDD, both disorders, or had no lifetime history of mental illness.
RESULTS: In the resulting network, the core

BACKGROUND: Local functional connectivity (FC) indicates local or short-distance functional interactions and may serve as a neuroimaging marker to investigate the human brain connectome. Local FC alterations suggest a disrupted balance in the local functionality of the whole brain network and are increasingly implicated in schizophrenia (SZ), bipolar disorder (BD), and major depressive disorder (MDD).
METHODS: We aim to examine the similarities and differences in the local FC across SZ, BD, and MDD. In total, 537 participants (SZ, 126; BD, 97; MDD, 126; and healthy controls, 188) completed re

The purpose of this case-control genetic association study was to explore potential relationships between polymorphisms in the limbic system-associated membrane protein (LSAMP) gene and mood and anxiety disorders. A total of 21 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from the LSAMP gene were analyzed in 591 unrelated patients with the diagnoses of major depressive disorder (MDD) or panic disorder (PD) and in 384 healthy control subjects. The results showed a strong association between LSAMP SNPs and MDD, and a suggestive association between LSAMP SNPs and PD. This is the first evidence of a pos

BACKGROUND: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are highly comorbid and clinically overlapping, but their shared and differential structural brain alterations remain unclear. This study investigated gray matter volume (GMV) alterations in GAD and MDD using voxel-based morphometry (VBM).
METHODS: A total of 168 right-handed participants, including 42 patients with GAD, 43 patients with MDD, and 83 healthy controls (HCs), underwent high-resolution T1-weighted MRI. Whole-brain VBM analyses were performed to compare GMV differences among the three groups, contro

Traditional clinical diagnoses relying on symptoms may overlook latent factors that illuminate mechanisms and potentially guide treatment. The Operationalized Psychodynamic Diagnosis (OPD) system may compensate for symptom-based diagnosis by measuring psychodynamic profiles underlying mental disorders through conflicts and structure axes. However, OPD has not been widely adopted in China, and it remains unclear whether OPD can be used as an effective approach to distinguish between depression and anxiety. The current study aims to adopt the OPD system to investigate the psychodynamic profiles

BACKGROUND: Resilience represents one of the fundamental elements of attachment and has often been investigated in mood disorders. This study aims to investigate possible correlations between attachment and resilience in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD).
METHODS: 106 patients (51 MDD, 55 BD) and 60 healthy controls (HCs) were administered the 21-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D-21), the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A), the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS), the Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale (SHAPS), the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11 (BI

Major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD) are the most common mood disorders. They are etiologically related, but clinically distinct psychiatric illnesses. Their shared clinical features result in high rates of misdiagnosis due to a lack of biomarkers that allow their differentiation. BD is more frequently misdiagnosed as MDD because of overlapping symptomology, often later onset of mania, and frequent occurrence of depressive episodes in patients with BD. Misdiagnosis is also increased when patients with BD present symptoms indicative of a clinically significant depressive ep

BACKGROUND: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) are highly comorbid, yet the combined condition has not been subject to any placebo-controlled treatment trials. This study reports a trial of vortioxetine, an antidepressant that has also shown benefit in Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), in patients meeting DSM-5 criteria for both MDD and SAD.
METHODS: The study was a 12-week double-blind, placebo-controlled comparison of vortioxetine 10-20 mg/day or placebo administered on a 1:1 ratio. The study was designed to include 40 male or female outpatients aged 18-70 y

BACKGROUND: It is still unclear how bipolar disorder (BD) differentiates from major depressive disorder (MDD) outside major mood episodes. To further elucidate this area, the present study compared the two mood disorders in terms of early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) during remission.
METHOD: The sample consisted of 49 participants with BD and 30 participants with MDD who were currently in remission. The participants completed the Young Schema Questionnaire.
RESULTS: The BD group scored significantly higher than the MDD group on seven EMSs: abandonment, failure to achieve, insufficient self-co
