BACKGROUND: Uncorrected refractive errors are a significant public health concern. Refractive error remains a common cause of vision impairment. Children are vulnerable to uncorrected refractive errors, which can impact their development, education, and social welfare. Hence, it is essential to understand the extent of uncorrected refractive error in different populations to facilitate healthcare planning and the implementation of necessary interventions.
AIM: The study aimed to determine the prevalence of refractive error among school-going children in five primary schools in Mzuzu City.

INTRODUCTION: Malawi has a high and rising incidence of musculoskeletal injuries and inadequate orthopaedic trauma care capacity, which must be urgently addressed.
METHODS: We performed a scoping literature review to define essential goals and challenges to musculoskeletal trauma care delivery in Malawi pertaining to the following domains: injury prevention, prehospital care, rural health centres, district hospitals, and central hospitals. For each domain, essential goals were ratified and challenges were prioritized by a panel of experts on Malawian orthopaedic trauma care.
RESULTS: The fiv

OBJECTIVE: Microbial keratitis (MK) is a significant cause of blindness in sub-Saharan Africa. We investigated the feasibility of using a novel corneal impression membrane (CIM) for obtaining and processing samples by culture, PCR and whole-genome sequencing (WGS) in patients presenting with suspected MK in Malawi.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Samples were collected from patients presenting with suspected MK using a 12 mm diameter polytetrafluoroethylene CIM disc. Samples were processed using culture and PCR for Acanthamoeba, herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and the bacterial 16S rRNA gene. Minim

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether two maternity waiting homes (MWHs) supported by the Safe Motherhood Initiative are reaching vulnerable women during the early phase of their implementation.
METHODS: A cross-sectional interview-based study was conducted among women who attended two centers in Malawi with attached MWHs (Area 25 Health Centre, Lilongwe; and Kasungu District Hospital, Kasungu). Between April and June 2015, exit interviews were conducted among MWH users and non-users.
RESULTS: Compared with non-users, MWH users at Area 25 were significantly more likely to report a prior spontaneou

BACKGROUND: The return of chloroquine-sensitive Plasmodium falciparum to the limited area of Blantyre, Malawi, has been well demonstrated in several studies.
METHODS: To characterize chloroquine susceptibility over a wide geographic area, infants and children aged 6-59 months were selected using 2-stage cluster sampling in 8 Malawian districts. Pyrosequencing of the pfcrt gene codon 76 region was performed for children with asexual parasitemia.
RESULTS: Of 7145 children, 1150 had microscopic asexual parasitemia, and sequencing was performed in 685, of whom 1 had a chloroquine-resistant genot

BACKGROUND: Ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) is the most common cause of malignancy of the conjunctiva. Variable clinical presentation means that invasive malignant OSSN is often difficult to discriminate from other similarly presenting differential diagnoses which can be managed more conservatively.
AIMS: Identification of clinical factors associated with a histopathological diagnosis of conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).
METHODS: Prospective consecutive case series of suspected OSSN cases presenting at two hospitals in Central Malawi over a 1 year period. A pro forma was c

The breadth of material found in surgical pathology services in African countries differs from the common spectrum of "the West". We report our experience of a voluntary work in the pathology departments of Blantyre and Lilongwe, Malawi. During a 6-week period, 405 cases (378 histology and 27 cytology cases) were processed. The vast majority showed significant pathological findings (n = 369; 91.1 %): 175 cases (47.4 %) were non-tumoral conditions with predominance of inflammatory lesions, e.g., schistosomiasis (n = 11) and tuberculosis (n = 11). There were 39 (10.6 %) benign tumors or tumor-li

OBJECTIVE: To assess associations between maternal mortality and severe morbidity and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, uptake of antiretroviral therapy, obstetric infections, and nonobstetric infections in a rural Malawian district, where the estimated HIV prevalence is 21%.
METHODS: We studied the incidence and outcomes of maternal peripartum infections between September 2007 and September 2009 at the district hospital. We used a facility-based prospective cohort study design, including all cases of severe maternal peripartum infection up to 42 days postpartum, and recorded mate

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a strongly emerging problem in developing countries. The documentation and prediction of CVD patterns are important for policy makers if actions are to be taken to curb this problem. We aimed to document the current CVD patterns in Malawi, and associate these patterns to the theory of epidemiologic transition as a means of predicting future CVD patterns.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data recorded in the register of the cardiac clinic in Mzuzu Central Hospital-the only cardiac clinic run by a cardiologist in Malawi-from 2001 through 2005.

UNLABELLED: PURPOSE. Malawi is a very poor country with a current population of 12 million people and very few orthopaedic surgeons or physiotherapists. An estimated 1125 babies are born per year with club foot. If these feet are not corrected early, then severe deformity can develop, requiring complex surgery. A task force was established to address this problem using locally available resources.
METHODS: A nationwide early manipulation programme was set up using the Ponseti technique, and a club foot clinic established in each of Malawi's 25 health districts. One year later the clinics were

AIM: The aim of this retrospective study was to report causes, antibiotic resistance and outcome of neonatal sepsis (often fatal in developing countries) in Malawi.
METHODS: All blood and cerebrospinal fluid isolates collected between January 1996 and December 2001 from inpatients aged 0-30 days with suspected sepsis at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Blantyre, Malawi were reviewed. In vitro resistance to antibiotics commonly used in Malawi was assessed. Case fatality rate was analysed with respect to age, bacterial pathogen and infection site.
RESULTS: A total of 801 bacteria were isolate

BACKGROUND: This paper considers why antenatal care (ANC) programs for adolescents may need to be improved in areas where a high proportion of first pregnancies are to young girls.
DESIGN: Descriptive data on the characteristics of 615 adolescents (aged 10-19 years) who attended for a first antenatal care visit at two rural hospitals in southern Malawi are given. For the 41.5% who came for a supervised delivery, details of their pregnancy care and delivery outcome are provided. The Chi-square test is used for determining significant differences between age and parity groups and logistic regre

Alternative strategies for screening tuberculosis (TB) suspects are needed in sub-saharan Africa. Ambulatory adult TB suspects who were seen in the chronic cough room of Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Blantyre, Malawi, were assessed with respect to appropriateness of referral. Appropriate referrals (patients with cough 3 weeks or longer, weight loss and no antibiotic response) were screened by 3 sputum specimens for microscopy and culture of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and chest radiography (CXR). Hypothetical strategy A (screening by sputum smear examination followed by CXR in patients with

In Mangochi District, a rural area of Malawi, the prevalence of active syphilis was 3.6% among 3591 women who had singleton births and who were negative for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Compared with non-syphilitic women, those with active syphilis (positive Venereal Disease Research Laboratory/rapid plasmin reagin tests (titre > or = 1:8) and a reactive microhaemagglutination assay) were more likely to experience stillbirths as well as the early and late neonatal deaths and even postneonatal deaths of their children. Characteristics associated with active syphilis were not very useful

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Malawi, particularly among children under five years of age, with substantial geographic variation in transmission. Although malaria chemoprevention is effective, evidence on how malaria burden, climatic conditions, population exposure, and spatial dependence can inform its geographic prioritisation in Malawi remains limited. This study aimed to develop composite measures of malaria burden, climatic suitability, and population exposure, assess climatic influences and spatial dependence on malaria transmission and identif
