INTRODUCTION: Our objective was to examine the Teen Oral Health-related Quality of Life (TOQOL) questionnaire for use in adults receiving orthodontic treatment and assess validity and reliability by age group.
METHODS: Teenagers from 10 to 18 years and adults 18 and over completed surveys at the orthodontic clinic at Boston University. The survey consisted of sociodemographic information, dental behavior questions, and the TOQOL instrument. Malocclusion severity was assessed using the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need.
RESULTS: Overall, 161 teens and 146 adults participated. The mean ages

The present study reports a case of Angle Class II malocclusion treatment of a male growing patient with 10-mm overjet, excessive overbite and transverse maxillary deficiency. The case was presented to the Brazilian Board of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (BBO), with DI equal to or greater than 10, as a requirement for the title of certified by the BBO.

BACKGROUND: The orofacial musculature plays a pivotal role in maintaining a balance in positioning of the teeth and any imbalance which occurs in this , results in malocclusion. Lingual frenum is a soft tissue structure which tethers the ventral surface of the tongue to the floor of the mouth.
OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to analyze the lingual frenal lengths in skeletal class I, class II and Class III malocclusion and to correlate relationship between both.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study comprised of 30 subjects, with 10 in each group and an impression was made with the maximum mo

INTRODUCTION: A deepbite malocclusion should not be approached as a disease entity; instead, it should be viewed as a clinical manifestation of underlying discrepancies. The aim of this study was to investigate the various skeletal and dental components of deep bite malocclusion, the significance of the contribution of each, and whether there are certain correlations between them.
METHODS: Dental and skeletal measurements were made on lateral cephalometric radiographs and study models of 124 patients with deepbite. These measurements were statistically analyzed.
RESULTS: An exaggerated curve

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of non-extraction treatment protocol combined with rapid palatal expansion and lower molar distalization in borderline Class III malocclusion in adolescents.
METHODS: Nine borderline Class III patients (average age: 13.4 ± 0.7 years) with average (6.7 ± 2.8)mm crowding in maxilla and (2.6 ± 0.4) mm crowding in mandible received the treatment described above. The lateral cephalograms of these patients were analyzed. All patients had a pretreatment ANB angle greater than -3°. The difference before and after treatment was analyzed with paired t test using SPSS11.0

A 23-year-old woman with a skeletal Class III relationship, a normal vertical jaw relationship, and missing maxillary lateral incisors was treated with bidimensional fixed edgewise appliance therapy combined with orthognathic surgery. A functional and esthetic occlusion in an improved facial profile was established at the end of the surgical and orthodontic treatment. Pretreatment, posttreatment, and long-term follow-up records for the patient are presented.

BACKGROUND: Facial skeletal asymmetries in Class III subjects seeking orthognathic surgery may complicate subsequent treatment.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate facial asymmetry in orthognathic surgery patients with Class III malocclusion.
METHODS: The Class III group consisted of 29 orthognathic surgery patients 114 female, 15 male; Mean age: 21.44 years) with Class III malocclusions. The Control group consisted of 32 subjects (16 female, 16 male; Mean age: 19.20 years) with excellent Class I occlusal relationships. Facial skeletal asymmetry, based on the skeletal mid

The purpose of this study to clarify the factors an effecting lip seal in Japanese adults with malocclusion. Sixty-three malocclusion patients aged 20 to 27 years were randomly selected and compared with fourteen normal occlusion controls aged 22 to 26 years old. The subjects were divided into a good seal group and a poor lip seal group by observing the distance between the upper and lower lip at rest. Results of this adult study were as follows; There were no poor lip seals in normal occlusion subjects. Significant differences were observed for tongue thrust (p < 0.05) and mouth breathing (p

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the glenoid fossa in Class II and Class III malocclusions with mandibular retrusion and protrusion.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective investigation examined 60 Class II and 60 Class III cephalometric radiographs. Cephalometric landmarks and glenoid fossa measurements were taken. Statistical analysis contrasted the two malocclusion groups' glenoid fossas.
RESULTS: Class II malocclusion had a much lower mean Sella-Nasion-Condylion (SNCd) angle (glenoid fossa sagittal position) than Class III (14.6° ± 1.9). Class II malocclusion had a lower mean Sella-Nasion-

OBJECTIVE: Despite increasing evidence that common genetic variation contributes to variation in jaw and cranial base morphology, the biological mechanisms underlying malocclusion remain poorly defined. This study tested the hypothesis that a noncoding variant near TWIST1 alters craniofacial development by disrupting transcriptional regulation, contributing to skeletal phenotypes associated with malocclusion.
METHODS: In a cohort of 277 non-syndromic individuals with malocclusion, we performed targeted genotyping and deep sequencing of the TWIST1 locus, followed by multivariate genotype-pheno

Class Ⅱ malocclusion is one of the factors inducing poor appearance and occlusal dysfunction in adolescents, which affects their physical and mental development. The success of treatment in correction class Ⅱ malocclusion in adolescents is dependent on the appropriate choice of therapy timing and methods, because of multifaceted causes. And puberty represents an essential period for development improvement. In the meantime, precise risk prevention and management are also conducive to the enhance treatment outcomes. Occlusal plane (OP) is one of the essential factors affecting craniofacial morphology and function. The OP not only assists in diagnosing malocclusion but also serves as an important reference for making treatment plans. Patients with different types of malocclusions have different forms of OP. Compared with patients with standard skeletal facial type, the occlusal plane of patients with skeletal class Ⅱ and high angle is steeper, while that of patients with skeletal class Ⅲ and low angle is more even. In orthodontic treatment, adjusting and controlling the OP can promote the normal growth and

BACKGROUND: Ankyloglossia is a congenital alteration that affects the tongue's mobility, influencing craniofacial development; however, its association with malocclusion is still unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the association between ankyloglossia and malocclusion in patients.
TYPES OF STUDIES REVIEWED: The authors conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies that investigated the association between malocclusion and the presence of ankyloglossia in any age group, used any assessment tool to diagnose ankyloglossia, and considered all

Children in the mixed dentition grow rapidly, and various types of malocclusion often appear in this period. At the same time, there are many environmental factors affecting the development of the occlusion at this stage. Functional abnormalities related to lip, tongue, articulation and breathing, and impacted teeth should be actively intervened and blocked to avoid the continued development of the deformity. Appropriate orthopedic devices should be used in patients with skeletal malocclusion, if necessary, for growth modification and the influence of congenital factors and the prognosis of tr

Occlusion is the way in which the dental arches are related to each other and depends on craniofacial growth and development. It is affected in patients with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) who present altered craniofacial development. The malocclusion present in 49 patients diagnosed with different types of OI aged between 4 and 18 was studied. The control group of healthy people was matched for age, sex, and molar class. To study the mixed and permanent dentition, the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) discrepancy Index was applied. The primary dentition was evaluated with a Temporary Dentiti
