Malignant mental nerve neuropathy: systematic review.

Malignant mental neuropathy (MMN) is a neurological manifestation of cancer, characterized by the presence of hypoesthesia or anesthesia restricted to the territory of the mental branch of the mandibular nerve. A systematic review of the literature has been made on MMN, analyzing the etiology, pathogeny, clinical characteristics, complementary tests and the prognosis. Sixteen studies, providing 136 cases were selected. Breast cancer and lymphomas were the most frequently associated malignant diseases. The most frequent pathogenic mechanisms producing neurological involvement were: peripherally

Template based segmental mandibulectomy with nerve preservation and patient-specific PEEK plate reconstruction in a dog.

A 7-year-old French Bulldog presented with an acanthomatous ameloblastoma affecting approximately 30% of the right mandibular body. We utilized a patient-specific 3D-printed surgical template to perform lateral fenestration of the mandible and elevation of the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN), facilitating nerve preservation during subsequent segmental mandibulectomy. The resulting critical-sized bone defect was anatomically stabilized using a patient-specific polyetheretherketone (PEEK) bridging plate. The recovery process was uneventful, with maintained occlusion and orofacial sensitivity.Simil

Classification of mandibular molar furcation involvement in periapical radiographs by deep learning.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to classify mandibular molar furcation involvement (FI) in periapical radiographs using a deep learning algorithm. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Full mouth series taken at East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine from 2011-2023 were screened. Diagnostic-quality mandibular premolar and molar periapical radiographs with healthy or FI mandibular molars were included. The radiographs were cropped into individual molar images, annotated as " Работает" or " FI," and divided into training, validation, and testing datasets. The images were preprocessed by PyTo

[Practical experience in treating mandibular osteomyelitis ("lumpy jaw") with gamithromycin in a muntjac].

Mandibular osteomyelitis is common in domestic and wild ruminants. Inflammation of the mandible is not only caused by Actinomyces ssp., but numerous additional bacteria may also lead to this disease. A privately owned muntjac was presented to the clinic due to reluctant food intake and a solid mass on the corpus of the right mandible. Cranial radiography led to the diagnosis mandibular osteomyelitis. The muntjac was treated with gamithromycin (Zactran®) for 50 days, which led to an improvement of food intake as well as a size reduction of the mandibular mass. Radiographic imaging 18 and 28 mon

Aplasia of the mandibular condyle associated with some orthopaedic abnormalities.

A rare case of aplasia of mandibular condyle associated with some other orthopaedic problems is presented. A 5-year-old boy attended our clinic with a chief complaint of facial asymmetry and chewing difficulty. The mandible was deviated to the left. The occlusion also showed a deflection to the left of the mandibular midline. He also had walking difficulty owing to a hip abnormality. Panoramic radiographic examination of the patient revealed that the left mandibular condyl was totally absent. The right condyle was unremarkable. His history revealed neither trauma nor any significant disease. A

SCPNB is an adjuvant to local anaesthesia for maxillofacial surgical practice.

The superficial cervical plexus nerve block [SCPNB] procedure is frequently used throughout head and neck surgery because it is simple to learn and has a low rate of complications. The investigation of this method might produce superior outcomes in treating frequent maxillofacial disorders including mandibular fractures and infections of the odontogenic region. The SCPNB is known to play a part in the medical evacuation of head and neck abscesses, the excision of superficial diseases in the perimandibular region, and the therapy of mandibular fracture, despite the dearth of research in this ar

Temporomandibular joint involvement caused by Borrelia Burgdorferi.

BACKGROUND: Lyme borreliosis is an endemic disease in Slovenia with an incidence of around 150 patients per 100,000 inhabitants. Although the large joints are most typically affected in Lyme borreliosis, there are also periods of disease activity with arthritis or arthralgias involving smaller joints, including the temporo-mandibular joint. PATIENTS: During the years between 2000 and 2003, two patients with Lyme borreliosis affecting the temporo-mandibular joints were treated. The patients presented with fatigue and pain in diverse muscle groups accompanied by arthralgia, which was most prono

Neuroblastoma Metastasis to the Mandible in Children: A Case Report and Focused Narrative Review of Reported Cases.

Background: Neuroblastoma is a common extracranial solid malignant tumor of early childhood; however, mandibular involvement is rare and may mimic odontogenic or inflammatory disease. Case Presentation: We report an 8-month-old girl with left paramandibular swelling initially suspected to represent parotitis or odontogenic inflammation. Imaging revealed a destructive mandibular lesion with sunburst periosteal reaction, and histology confirmed undifferentiated neuroblastoma. Staging identified a left primary adrenal tumor with extensive bone marrow infiltration and MYCN proto-oncogene amplifica

Pathological mandibular fractures: a review of the literature of the last two decades.

Pathological mandibular fractures are rare, accounting for fewer than 2% of all fractures of the mandible. They could be defined as fractures that occur in regions where bone has been weakened by an underlying pathological process. Pathological fractures usually may follow surgical interventions such as third molar removal or implant placement, result from regions of osteomyelitis, osteoradionecrosis, and bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw, occur because of idiopathic reasons or be facilitated by cystic lesions, benign, malignant, or metastatic tumors. Pathological mandibular frac

Prevention of tongue prolapse by immediate stabilization in severely avulsed mandibular war injuries.

A significantly successful procedure for tongue stabilization, used in six cases of severe war injuries to the mandible, which prevents the serious complications of tongue prolapse, is here presented. The procedure consists of a the insertion of horseshoe-shaped Kirschner wire, the ends of which are fixed to the posterior mandibular segments, thus acting as a scaffolding for the lacerated soft tissues of the anterior two-thirds of the tongue, floor of the mouth and the submandibular region. This technique provides an acceptable appearance and assists feeding, reduces dribbling and dryness of t

Successful management of severe coronoid process hyperplasia in a patient with mucopolysaccharidosis VI: a case report.

Mucopolysaccharidoses are a group of rare lysosomal storage diseases caused by a deficiency of enzymes, which breakdown glycosaminoglycans, with consequent dysfunction of affected tissues. Mandibular coronoid hyperplasia, with associated trismus, has been recently described as a feature of the craniofacial abnormalities seen in these patients. However, the details of the surgical and post-operative management of these patients have not been previously documented. This case describes the successful management of severe trismus from coronoid process hyperplasia in a 14-year-old male, utilising a

[Growth of maxillo-facial region and related anomalies.].

Since maxillo-facial region is quite complex, growth and developmental defect cause various anomalies. It is known that 70% of whole genetic disorders have any symptom or abnormal condition in maxilla-facial region. Cleft lip and/or palate is the most popular congenital anomaly and is seen in 0.2% of general population. Cases with Treacher Collins syndrome and Robin sequence are with respiratory problem due to the small mandible or mandibular retrusion. Achondroplasia is a genetic disease with short-limbed dwarfism due to abnormal proliferation or differentiation of chondrocytes. Interestingly

The "mandibular mantle"--a sign of rickets in very low birth weight infants.

Mandibular periosteal new bone formation (the "mandibular mantle") is described in very low birth weight infants with other signs of severe metabolic bone disease. In infants with onset of dyspnoea and apnoea, between two and three months of age, this mandibular change suggests that the lung disorder is of skeletal, rather than pulmonary origin and aids in differentiation therefore, from the Mikity-Wilson Syndrome (pulmonary dystmaturity).
