When virus and microfilariae are ingested concurrently by a mosquito, microfilariae (mf) may penetrate the mosquito midgut and introduce virus directly into the mosquito hemocoel, allowing mosquitoes to become infectious much sooner than normal and enhancing transmission of viruses by mosquitoes. Mansonella ozzardi (Manson) is a benign filarial nematode parasite of humans in Latin America and is transmitted by black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) and biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae). Because M. ozzardi and dengue are sympatric, we wanted to know whether M. ozzardi mf had the ability to pe

Mansonella (M.) perstans filariasis is widely found in Africa, including Gabon where Loa loa is also endemic. This study reports the total IgE titres according to different bioclinical forms of single or co-infection with L. loa and M. perstans in 138 patients and 20 healthy controls. The median parasite density was significantly higher in cases of loiasis. IgE titres were higher in patients with microscopic dual-infection and in the group of patients with occult loiasis plus M. perstans microfilaraemia (8425 [5292-20,679]KUI/L and 6304 [1045-10,326]KUI/L, respectively), compared to individual

The objective of this paper was to describe the current status of Mansonella ozzardi prevalence among the inhabitants of 12 communities along the Ituxi river, in Lábrea municipality, state of Amazonas. The prevalence of M. ozzardi was determined using thick blood smears obtained by digital punctures. M. ozzardi was found in 30.23% of the samples collected (39/129), with similar prevalence between genders (males: 30.30%; females: 30.16%); the highest prevalence was found in homemakers (45.45%) followed by farmers (38.77%). Among age groups, males and females older than 48 exhibited the highest

BACKGROUND: Nodding syndrome (NS) has been consistently associated with onchocerciasis. Nevertheless, a positive association between NS and a Mansonella perstans infection was found in South Sudan. We aimed to determine whether the latter parasite could be a risk factor for NS in Mahenge.
METHODS: Cases of epilepsy were identified in villages affected by NS in Mahenge, Tanzania, and matched with controls without epilepsy of the same sex, age and village. We examined blood films of cases and controls to identify M. perstans infections. The participants were also asked for sociodemographic and

Mansonella perstans (Mp) filariasis is present in large populations in sub-Saharan Africa, and to what extent patent Mp infection modulates the expression of immunity in patients, notably their cellular cytokine and chemokine response profile, remains not well known. We studied the spontaneous and inducible cellular production of chemokines (C-X-C motif) ligand 9 (CXCL9) [monokine induced by interferon (IFN)-γ (MIG)], CXCL-10 [inducible protein (IP)-10], chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 24 (CCL24) (eotaxin-2), CCL22 [macrophage-derived chemokine (MDC)], CCL13 [monocyte chemotactic protein-4 (MCP-4

BACKGROUND: Culicoides (Diptera; Ceratoponidae) are tiny, stout, blood-sucking flies with a near worldwide distribution. When present, they are often considered a biting nuisance but in addition, they are involved in the transmission of pathogens to humans, domestic and wild animals. Data on Culicoides species in the South-West region of Cameroon dates back to the 1950s. Over the decades, ecological transformation due to agriculture and deforestation may have affected the population dynamics of Culicoides and therefore our study provides an update of their bio-ecology in the region. Furthermor

INTRODUCTION Mansonella ozzardi is a widely distributed filaria worm in the Amazon region. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of M. ozzardi infection in riverine communities of Lábrea municipality, Amazonas State, Brazil. METHODS A diagnostic blood filtration method in a polycarbonate membrane was used. RESULTS M. ozzardi was found in 50.3% of the sample, with the highest prevalence in farmers/fishermen (69.4%; χ 2 = -19.14, p<0.001). The prevalence was higher in longer-term residents (≥11 years; 60.2%). CONCLUSIONS M. ozzardi infection rates are high near the Purus River, much great

To differentiate the skin-dwelling filariae Mansonella streptocerca and Onchocerca volvulus, a nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay was developed from small amounts of parasite material present in skin biopsies. One nonspecific and one specific pair of primers were used to amplify the 5S rDNA spacer region of M. streptocerca. Biopsies with different microfilaria densities obtained from 104 Ugandans living in an area endemic for M. streptocerca were tested using both the nested PCR assay and standard parasitologic assessment of microfilariae. All 82 samples from microfilaria carriers we

Sixty cases of Manzonella perstans were studied during a three year period by clinical and blood parasitologic studies. It was observed that 31.2 was negative and that mean microfilaremia decreased from 49.3, at the beginning of the study, to 32.9 at the end of it, in those cases yet positive. According to the persistent microfilaremia, which means a relative longevity of adult parasites, the surveillance of individuals suffering it is recommended at their arrival to a non-endemic area where the vectors of such disease are present.

For the first time, a parasitologic survey has been carried out in the Niefang District (continental area of equatorial Guinea) within a sample of 829 people aged of more than 10 years. Parasitologic incidence was 27.1 p.c. for Loa-Loa and 66.3 p.c. for Mansonella perstans. Significant differences were noted in the prevalence and in the mean density of microfilariae of both species according to the altitude of the villages surveyed.

A survey conducted among the Makuxi Indians from 15 settlements in the northeastern part of the Territory of Roraima, Brazil, revealed the occurrence of Mansonella ozzardi in 3,2% (21/652) of the persons examined. The absence of demonstrable infection--with one exception--in persons under 15 years of age, and the low microfilaria density in adults suggest that mansonelliasis has been acquired by the Makuxi Indians outside their villages. As many Indians from the region pan gold on the Upper Maú (Ireng) river--where black flies occur in great quantity--the mining camps are probably the sites of

Development of the microfilaria of Mansonella ozzardi to the infective stage in a species of the Simulium sanguineum group from the Mitú area, Comisaría del Vaupés, Colombia is described. Development was synchronous, and by day 6 third-stage larvae were observed in the head of flies which had fed on two naturally infected volunteers. Simulium biting activity was high from January-March, during the dry season. Only 261 blood-fed Culicoides were collected from an infected volunteer; 40% of 43 dissected on day 0 had ingested microfilariae. However, only one of 129 C. caprilesi specimens dissected

Three hundred and eighty-six blood films were taken from mesticos (persons of mixed race) in villages on the river Purus, Amazonas; 17(4-4%) were infected with Mansonella ozzardi. An average of 11-2 microfilariae/20 mm3 of blood (range 1-103) were found in infected persons. No statistical difference was found between the infection rates of males and females. Seringueiros (rubber collectors) and lavradores (agricultural workers) showed similar high infection rates, compared to people with indoor occupations. Rubber-collecting communities showed a higher infection rate with M. ozzardi than villa

Despite the broad distribution of M. ozzardi in Latin America and the Caribbean, there is still very little DNA sequence data available to study this neglected parasite's epidemiology. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences, especially the cytochrome oxidase (CO1) gene's barcoding region, have been targeted successfully for filarial diagnostics and for epidemiological, ecological and evolutionary studies. MtDNA-based studies can, however, be compromised by unrecognised mitochondrial pseudogenes, such as Numts. Here, we have used shot-gun Illumina-HiSeq sequencing to recover the first complete Man

BACKGROUND: In the Brazilian Amazon, the filarial nematode Mansonella ozzardi co-exists with malaria parasites and thick blood smear microscopy is considered the diagnostic gold standard. Transfusion of M. ozzardi microfilariae does not establish new infections, however microfilariae can survive approximately 2 years in blood-recipients with unknown risk of pathology. Data on transfusion-transmitted filariasis are lacking. This study investigated M. ozzardi parasitemias in blood donors from decentralized centers of "Fundação Hematologia e Hemoterapia do Estado do Amazonas/HEMOAM," Northern Bra

Onchocerca volvulus and Mansonella ozzardi are two human filarial parasites present in South and Central America. In the Brazilian Amazonia they are found in sympatry, and the lack of clear morphological diagnostic characters in the microfilariae hinders their identification. The major sperm protein (MSP) gene of both species has been sequenced and characterised to determine its potential as a molecular diagnostic character. The length of the MSP gene is different in each species, and this could be used to detect and differentiate them by running the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) product in

The prevalence of mansonelliasis was studied in the municipality of Tefé, state of Amazonas, Brazil. The prevalence (thick blood smear method) was 13.6% (147/1,078), higher in the Solimões River region (16.3%) than in the Tefé River region (6.3%). In the sampled communities in the Solimões River region, a higher density of cases was observed, as indicated by a kernel analysis (odds ratio 0.34; 95% confidence interval: 0.20-0.57). Males had a higher prevalence (χ2 = 31.292, p < 0.001) than women. Mansonella ozzardi prevalence was higher in retirees and farmers (28.9% and 27%, respectively). Pre

Ecdysteroids are compounds related to 20-hydroxyecdysone, the insect moulting hormone. Surprisingly, they have been found in serum and urine of patients infected with helminths. In these cases, the substances are assumed to be produced by the parasites and, therefore, might be used as a marker of parasitic infection. Thus, we need to know exactly which species, at which developmental stage, can release ecdysteroids in such large quantities that they could be detected in the biological fluids of the host. Large-scale investigations must, accordingly, be devoted to the major species of helminths
