A surgeon-controlled robotic uterine manipulator to improve autonomy, efficiency, and consistency during hysterectomy: a clinical opinion on the InvisiGrasp concept: Short Title: Surgeon-Controlled Robotic Uterine Manipulator.

Uterine manipulation remains a critical yet often overlooked component of robotic-assisted hysterectomy. Conventional approaches rely on assistant-operated devices, introducing variability, communication delays, and limitations to surgeon autonomy. In this clinical opinion, we describe the conceptual design and potential advantages of InvisiGrasp, a patent-pending, surgeon-controlled robotic uterine manipulator. This device integrates uterine positioning into the robotic platform, eliminating dependence on verbal commands or manual assistant input. Beyond improving surgical precision and workf

Recent advances in autism research as reflected in DSM-5 criteria for autism spectrum disorder.

This article provides a selective review of advances in scientific knowledge about autism spectrum disorder (ASD), using DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition) diagnostic criteria as a framework for the discussion. We review literature that prompted changes to the organization of ASD symptoms and diagnostic subtypes in DSM-IV, and we examine the rationale for new DSM-5 specifiers, modifiers, and severity ratings as well as the introduction of the diagnosis of social (pragmatic) communication disorder. Our goal is to summarize and critically consider the co

Alexithymia and pathological gambling.

The purpose of this study was to study the relationship between alexithymia and gambling in a community sample of pathological gamblers. Pathological, problem and non-problem gamblers were recruited from the community via advertisements and completed an assessment of their gambling behavior and the Toronto Alexithymia Scale. Alexithymia was higher among male pathological gamblers who identified slot machines, cards, and lotteries as their primary gambling problem. High alexithymics scored higher on Diagnostic and Statistical Manual symptoms related to poor self-regulation, communication, and p

A simple procedure to improve FMRIb Software Library Brain Extraction Tool performance.

The Oxford FMRIb Software Library (FSL) Brain Extraction Tool (BET) is a widely used algorithm for removing extracranial tissues from MR images. Although BET is effective and simple to operate, it often fails to exclude fully all non-brain tissues unless the centre of gravity of the brain is specified to the programme. In this communication we present a recursive procedure for using BET that is extremely robust for extracting brain images without any manual intervention. The approach was tested on 150 adult head volumes and produced accurate results in all cases. The approach is efficient and

Rett Syndrome: some Behavioural Aspects and an Overview.

A brief review of the Rett syndrome is presented. The main clinical features are onset of mental deterioration, in girls only, between the ages of6 and 18 months, all of whom later develop peculiar stereotyped repetitive movements resembling hand washing. The cause is unknown; the condition occurs more often than phenylketonuria and laboratory tests are normal. Random sequences of hyper-ventilation-apnoea-normal breathing appear in a considerable number of girls and are accompanied by certain EEG features. The nature of the repetitive manual and respiratory phenomena is discussed. We suggest t

The Social Communication Intervention Project: a randomized controlled trial of the effectiveness of speech and language therapy for school-age children who have pragmatic and social communication problems with or without autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Children who show disproportionate difficulty with the pragmatic as compared with the structural aspects of language are described as having pragmatic language impairment (PLI) or social communication disorder (SCD). Some children who have PLI also show mild social impairments associated with high-functioning autism or autism spectrum disorder (ASD). There is little robust evidence of effectiveness of speech-language interventions which target the language, pragmatic or social communication needs of these children. AIMS: To evaluate the effectiveness of an intensive manualized soc

Role of speech therapy and sign language prior to cochlear implantation.

The speech therapist should assess and develop the communication skills of the deaf child prior and after a cochlear implantation. The goals are first the acquisition of a useful communication system by the deaf child (for avoiding a cognitive stimulation lack) and parallely the acquisition of good oral language competencies. The different modes of communication useable in the profoundly deaf education are presented. Exclusive sign language use is not indicated in implanted children. It is well demonstrated that an exclusive oral communication is associated with an insufficient knowledge of th

Towards Collaborative Autonomous Operations in Power Infrastructure: A Robotic Fine Manipulation Framework.

Gas-insulated substations (GISs) have been widely adopted in modern power systems due to their compact design and high reliability. However, the potential generation of toxic byproducts poses significant risks to manual operations such as gas pressure adjustments, highlighting the necessity for robotic deployments. This paper proposes a Robot Operating System (ROS)-based robotic framework with human-robot collaborative autonomy for GIS operations. The framework employs a 6-degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) robotic arm, integrated with a motion control system for trajectory execution, a visual percepti

AI-Augmented Teach-Back in Dentistry: From Patient Education to Verified Clinical Understanding.

Oral diseases remain among the most prevalent chronic conditions worldwide, yet their prevention and long-term management depend heavily on patient understanding of self-care, maintenance protocols, and procedural risks. Existing educational programs have not solved this problem because most individuals do not understand dental health, and communication with patients remains poor, which results in poor treatment outcomes. The teach-back method functions as an evidence-based communication tool that helps staff members confirm that patients have grasped essential information, but dental practiti

Chronic auditory agnosia following Landau-Kleffner syndrome: a 23 year outcome study.

We report a 27-year-old woman with chronic auditory agnosia following Landau-Kleffner Syndrome (LKS) diagnosed at age 4 1/2. She grew up in the hearing/speaking community with some exposure to manually coded English and American Sign Language (ASL). Manually coded (signed) English is her preferred mode of communication. Comprehension and production of spoken language remain severely compromised. Disruptions in auditory processing can be observed in tests of pitch and duration, suggesting that her disorder is not specific to language. Linguistic analysis of signed, spoken, and written English i

A Critical Review of Patient-Reported Inputs, Clinical Workflows, and Machine Learning Opportunities for State-of-the-Art Spinal Cord Stimulation.

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is an established treatment for chronic pain, but long-term outcomes remain inconsistent. Failures may originate from poor therapeutic targeting and dosing, both of which can stem from low-resolution patient-reported inputs and the subjective, trial-and-error programming in clinical workflows. These challenges are especially evident in patient-preferred, nominally paresthesia-free stimulation, which lacks somatotopic feedback, thereby complicating effective targeting and dosing. This review identifies deficiencies in current SCS clinical workflows: (1) lack of hig

Delivering Enhanced Milieu Teaching to Toddlers With Down Syndrome via Hybrid Telepractice: A Single-Case Experimental Design.

PURPOSE: This pilot study investigated delivering enhanced milieu teaching tailored for children with Down Syndrome (EMT-DS) through hybrid telepractice. METHOD: In this multiple-baseline design across behaviors study, a speech-language pathologist (SLP) taught EMT-DS to three caregivers and their children with DS (22-40 months) using a hybrid service delivery model. Sessions were conducted in person and via telepractice. The SLP taught caregivers EMT-DS, emphasizing the use of (a) four target EMT strategies: matched turns, expansions, time delays, and milieu teaching episodes; (b) augmentati

Brief Report: Investigating the Implications of Applying the New DSM-5 Criteria for Diagnosing Autism Spectrum Disorder in a Preschool Population in Singapore.

Diagnostic reports for 206 children who underwent an assessment for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) using the DSM-IV-TR criteria, were re-evaluated using the DSM-5 criteria. Mean age of the children at time of diagnosis was 3 years 10 months. Of the 202 children diagnosed with ASD on the DSM-IV-TR, 184 (91.1 %) also met the DSM-5 criteria for ASD. The overall concordance rate of ASD diagnosis on the DSM-IV-TR and DSM-5 was higher than that reported in other studies. Of the 18 children who did not meet DSM-5 criteria for ASD, 16 children met all social communication criteria but did not fulfil a

Cerebral organization of oral and signed language responses: case study evidence from amytal and cortical stimulation studies.

A normally hearing left-handed patient familiar with American Sign Language (ASL) was assessed under sodium amytal conditions and with left cortical stimulation in both oral speech and signed English. Lateralization was mixed but complementary in each language mode: the right hemisphere perfusion severely disrupted motoric aspects of both types of language expression, the left hemisphere perfusion specifically disrupted features of grammatical and semantic usage in each mode of expression. Both semantic and syntactic aspects of oral and signed responses were altered during left posterior tempo

Fibromyalgia Self-Management: Mapping the behaviour change techniques used in a practice-based programme.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a complex long-term condition associated with pain, fatigue and concentration difficulties. There is limited robust evidence for the effectiveness of pharmacological treatments for FM, with current guidelines recommending nonpharmacological interventions. The clinically developed Fibromyalgia Self-Management Programme (FSMP) is a nonpharmacological, multidisciplinary education group intervention. The FSMP aims to provide condition-specific, patient-centred education and exercise advice, supporting the development of core self-management skills. This research ai

A Semi-Automated Microfluidic Platform Employing Machine Learning Analysis to Study Adhesion Kinetics in Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

Current platforms for drug screening typically do not account for the tumor microenvironment. Microfluidic shear flow assays provide a highly sensitive tool for studying tumor cell communication at the single cell level with the microenvironment. Adhesion thereby serves as a functional readout that reflects cellular state, including loss of viability. However, previous platforms required extensive manual handling and time-consuming post-assay analysis. We developed a bright-field microscopy-enabled, semi-automated shear flow platform that combines hardware operation with a machine-learning-bas

Managing severe iodinated contrast extravasation: a case report highlighting the role of invasive intervention.

Although the incidence of contrast media extravasation (CME) is low and severe complications are rarer, when it occurs, it can lead to serious complications and patient dissatisfaction. In most cases, CME resolves with conservative treatment. However, some cases require invasive interventions for treatment. We report a case of CME in which the patient developed skin ulcers, necrosis, and hematoma after conservative treatment. Ultimately, the patient was successfully treated with manual compression, saline irrigation, and sharp debridement. Thus, a tiered strategy that combines preventive measu
