A quantitative comparison of the internal diameters of cerebral feeder arteries (internal carotid and vertebral) and the aorta in developing non-human eutherians, metatherians and monotremes has been made, with the aim of determining if there are differences in cerebral arterial flow between the three infraclasses of mammals such as might reflect differences in metabolism of the developing brain. There were no significant differences between eutherians and metatherians in the internal radius of the aorta or the thickness of the aortic wall, but aortic internal radius was significantly smaller

The isolation of Pasteurella multocida from several red-necked wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus) with purulent to necrotizing gingivitis, mandibular osteomyelitis, and conjunctivitis in a private zoological park prompted a cross-sectional prevalence study in two zoological collections. The study demonstrated a high prevalence of P. multocida carriage in clinically healthy red-necked wallabies. In one collection (n= 7), P. multocida was isolated from the gingival mucosa of two animals (28.6%) and the conjunctiva of one animal (14.3%). In another collection (n = 29), P. multocida was isolated fro

In a number of marsupial species, females exhibit characteristic, stereotyped parturient behavior that facilitates the passage of the neonates to the pouch. In macropodids, this parturient behavior can be induced in non-pregnant females and males by treatment with either prostaglandin F2alpha (PGF2alpha) or oxytocin (OT). This study investigated the effects of PGF2alpha and OT on behavior of Tasmanian devils. Animals tended to sit or lie down quickly, with little vocalization, after treatment with PGF2alpha or OT, while after saline, the animals remained alert, seldom sat, and frequently vocal

Histo-pathological analysis of the eyes, ears, skin and associated skeletal muscles of the back of 14 animals infected with a filarioid worm with dermal microfilariae, Cercopithifilaria johnstoni: seven Rattus fuscipes, of which four were naturally infected, two marsupials, Perameles nasuta and Isodon macrourus, and five R. norvegicus. This filarioid nematode induces skin and eye lesions in all the infected animals. These lesions are similar to those described earlier with other filarioid species with dermal microfilariae, such as Monanema martini and Onchocerca volvulus; the pathogeny is simi

Thirty-six koalas in a free-range Queensland population were fingerprinted using an M13 probe in combination with MspI digestion. The technique was found to be highly repeatable, with estimates of 0.1-1.6% within-gel error and 0.1-2.5% between-gel error. Of the 43 different-size fingerprint bands produced in the population, only 2 bands were common to all 36 koalas. Ten bands were quite rare, occurring at a frequency of 0.2 or less. All 36 koalas had unique DNA fingerprints (probability of 1.88 x 10(-7)), which enabled them each to be uniquely identified. Despite this, there was still a high l

Cultures of JU-56 cells were irradiated in either G1 or G2 and examined either in their first post-irradiation metaphase (in diploids) or in their second post-irradiation metaphase (in colcemid-induced tetraploids). The timing of fixation, together with tritiated thymidine pulse labelling, allowed selection for scoring only metaphases of cells that were in the G1 or G2 phase of the cell cycle during irradiation. With G1 irradiation it was found that many of the aberrations observed at the first division were not present (as derivatives) at the second division, and also that new aberrations wer

This report describes toxoplasmosis lesions in Australian marsupials. Clinical signs, necropsy findings and histopathological changes are summarized for 43 macropods, two common wombats, two koalas, six possums, 15 dasyurids, two numbats, eight bandicoots and one bilby. Animals either died suddenly without clinical signs or exhibited signs associated with respiratory, neurological or enteric disease. At necropsy, many marsupials had no visible lesions. Where present, common necropsy findings included pulmonary congestion, oedema and consolidation, adrenal enlargement and reddening, haemorrhage

Low (2.28 mg/kg) or high (4.56 mg/kg) doses of cadmium chloride were administered, either intraperitoneally or subcutaneously, to adult male potoroos (P. tridactylus). After 7 days, the testes, caput epididymis and spermatic cords of the high-dose groups all displayed a degree of cellular damage; however, the damage was not as extensive as that which occurs in some eutherian species after only 24 h. This time differential might be attributed to structural differences between the testicular blood supply in eutherians and marsupials.

Three Parma wallabies (Macropus parma) were inoculated with a herpesvirus recovered from a captive Parma wallaby with fatal naturally-occurring disease. Two intravenously inoculated animals died after 5 days and one animal infected via the conjunctiva and nasal mucosa was killed when moribund at 7 days. An additional two wallabies held in contact with the others became infected; they were killed at 11 days, when one was severely affected and one was mildly affected. All had small vesicles and ulcers of the skin of the upper and lower lips, eyelids, anogenital area and adjacent genital mucosa.

A Babesia parasite, isolated from the blood of a horse at Bowral, New South Wales, was identified on the basis of its morphological features, host specificity and serological reactions, as Babesia equi (Laveran 1901). The case was originally reported by Churchill and Best (1976, Aust. vet. J. 52: 487) and is the first record of equine babesiosis in Australia. In preliminary studies, the organism produced only a mild disease in an intact horse, but caused the typical clinical syndrome of acute babesiosis in a splenectomised horse, which died 19 days after the intravenous inoculation of the para

Blastocystis is a highly prevalent eukaryotic parasite of many animals and humans worldwide. It can compromise the gastrointestinal tract and cause gastrointestinal symptoms, constituting a serious threat to human health and animal growth. Many animals are potential sources of Blastocystis infection in humans. However, limited data are available regarding the prevalence and subtype distribution of Blastocystis infection among zoo animals in China. Therefore, the present study examined the prevalence and subtypes of Blastocystis in zoo animals in Hangzhou, Dalian, and Suzhou cities, China. Of 4

Color vision among mammals is diverse and complex, with many physiological and genetic factors affecting spectral sensitivity, the ability to perceive different wavelengths of light. In this study, the color vision of the sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps), a nocturnal, gliding mammal, was examined through a series of behavioral tests, genetic analyses, and immunohistochemistry. This is the first study to classify the color vision capabilities of this species. Sugar gliders demonstrated trichromacy and ultraviolet (UV) sensitivity, the latter of which was further supported by genetic analysis.

During hibernation, reduced metabolic activity enables to withstand periods of limited resources and harsh weather. Therefore, animals exhibit reduced activity and decreased feeding, which involves energy savings. Thus, a reduction in both physiological and morphological digestive capacities is expected due to the prolonged metabolic depression of hibernation, which involves phenotypic flexibility of the digestive system at several levels. We studied Dromiciops gliroides a heterothermic marsupial endemic of the temperate rainforests of southern South America, by comparing the morphology and ph

A 3-year-old male sugar glider presented with pruritus and alopecia primarily affecting the back and neck regions. Dermatologic diagnostics ruled out common causes. Skin biopsies revealed cutaneous epitheliotropic T-cell lymphoma, a rare condition in sugar gliders. Despite treatment, the glider's condition worsened, leading to death. This case highlights the importance of thorough diagnostic evaluation in exotic pets.

A 7-y-old, castrated male, leucistic sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps) was presented because of a progressive history of lethargy, ataxia, diarrhea, and anorexia. Abdominal ultrasound revealed fluid in the abdomen and an infiltrative mass in the liver. Due to a poor prognosis, euthanasia was performed. Postmortem examination revealed a focally extensive, infiltrative, off-white, firm mass in the liver with adhesion to the omentum, mesentery, gastric serosa, and diaphragm. The remaining hepatic parenchyma was diffusely yellow. Histologically, the hepatic mass was consistent with metastatic chol

Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are used globally to control rodent pests. Second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) persist in the liver and pose a significant risk of bioaccumulation and secondary poisoning in predators, including species that do not generally consume rodents. As such, there is a clear need to understand the consumption of ARs, particularly SGARs, by non-target consumers to determine the movement of these anticoagulants through ecosystems. We collected and analysed the livers from deceased common brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) and common ringtail possu

BACKGROUND: Morphological convergence is a fundamental aspect of evolution, allowing for inference of the biology and ecology of extinct species by comparison with the form and function of living species as analogues. The thylacine (Thylacinus cynocephalus), the iconic recently extinct marsupial, is considered a classic example of convergent evolution with the distantly related placental wolf or dog, though almost nothing is actually known regarding its ecology. This lack of data leads to questions regarding the degree of convergence with, and the similarity of, the functional ecology of the t

Cryptosporidium is an obligate intracellular parasite which can cause fatal diarrheal disease in exotic animals. Sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps), hedgehogs (Atelerix albiventris), chinchillas (Chinchilla lanigera), and common leopard geckos (Eublepharis macularius) are popular exotic animals commonly sold in pet shops in Japan. We herein investigated the species and subtypes of Cryptosporidium in these animals. Cryptosporidium fayeri was detected in a sugar glider in a Japanese animal hospital. Sequence analyses of the 60-kDa glycoprotein (gp60) gene revealed that C. fayeri belonged to subt

For generalist predators, a mixed diet can be advantageous as it allows individuals to exploit a potentially broad range of profitable food types. Despite this, some generalist predators show preferences for certain types of food and may forage selectively in places or at times when these foods are available. One such species is the lesser hairy-footed dunnart (Sminthopsis youngsoni). Usually considered to be a generalist insectivore, in the Simpson Desert, Australia, this small marsupial predator has been found to selectively consume wolf spiders (Family Lycosidae), for reasons yet unknown.
