Methods to assess the impact of mass oral cholera vaccination campaigns under real field conditions.

There is increasing interest to use oral cholera vaccination as an additional strategy to water and sanitation interventions against endemic and epidemic cholera. There are two internationally-available and WHO-prequalified oral cholera vaccines: an inactivated vaccine containing killed whole-cells of V. cholerae O1 with recombinant cholera toxin B-subunit (WC/rBS) and a bivalent inactivated vaccine containing killed whole cells of V. cholerae O1 and V. cholerae O139 (BivWC). The efficacy, effectiveness, direct and indirect (herd) protection conferred by WC/rBS and BivWC are well established.

Dynamics of meningococcal long-term carriage among university students and their implications for mass vaccination.

In the 1997-98 academic year, we conducted a longitudinal study of meningococcal carriage and acquisition among first-year students at Nottingham University, Nottingham, United Kingdom. We examined the dynamics of long-term meningococcal carriage with detailed characterization of the isolates. Pharyngeal swabs were obtained from 2,453 first-year students at the start of the academic year (October), later on during the autumn term, and again in March. Swabs were immediately cultured on selective media, and meningococci were identified and serologically characterized. Nongroupable strains were g

Diphtheria, pertussis, and measles in Portugal before and after mass vaccination: a time series analysis.

Techniques of time series analysis were used to examine historical records of the incidence of diphtheria, pertussis, and measles, and of deaths by measles in Portugal during the twentieth century. There are statistically significant seasonal and longterm oscillations in the incidence of these diseases. Seasonal oscillations appear to be in close association with the resumption of school classes in the fall in the case of diphtheria, but not in pertussis and measles. Long-term oscillations in pertussis (3.5-4 year period) and measles (3-year period), before vaccination, corroborate theoretical

Acute Adverse Events at a Mass Vaccination Site after the Third and Fourth COVID-19 Vaccinations in Japan.

The third and fourth doses of the vaccine against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) were widely administered in Japan since December 2021. Currently, however, data are scarce regarding acute adverse events with the third and fourth doses. The present study reports the profiles of acute adverse events after the third and fourth COVID-19 vaccine doses, seen at the site of a mass vaccination center in Japan. Between December 2021 and July 2022, 267,515 individuals received the third, and 32,934 received the fourth COVID-19 vaccine dose at the mass vaccination center, of whom 442 recipients of t

Pregnancy outcomes after a mass vaccination campaign with an oral cholera vaccine: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cholera has harmful effects on the fetus but safety data on the oral cholera vaccine in pregnant women are controversial. OBJECTIVES: We conducted the first meta-analysis of studies in pregnant women comparing the effect of oral cholera vaccination on pregnancy outcomes with unvaccinated women. Outcomes of interest were adverse pregnancy outcome, miscarriage, stillbirth, preterm delivery, low birthweight, abortion and malformation. SEARCH STRATEGY: The search was run in MEDLINE/PubMed, SCOPUS and Embase databases from inception up to December 2019. SELECTION CRITERIA: Inclusion

Short-term safety of 4CMenB vaccine during a mass meningococcal B vaccination campaign in Quebec, Canada.

BACKGROUND: To address a high incidence of serogroup B invasive meningococcal disease (IMD-B) in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region, Quebec, Canada, a mass vaccination campaign targeting nearly 60,000 individuals ≤20 years old was launched in May 2014. Because of the limited clinical experience with the four-component meningococcal B vaccine (4CMenB), active surveillance for adverse events following immunization (AEFI) was conducted. This paper reports 4CMenB AEFI surveillance findings. METHODS: Active surveillance assessed AEFIs with acute onset within 7-days post-immunization, AEFI-associat

Oral cholera vaccine coverage during a preventive door-to-door mass vaccination campaign in Nampula, Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: In addition to improving water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) measures and optimal case management, the introduction of Oral cholera vaccine (OCV) is a complementary strategy for cholera prevention and control for vulnerable population groups. In October 2016, the Mozambique Ministry of Health implemented a mass vaccination campaign using a two-dose regimen of the Shanchol™ OCV in six high-risk neighborhoods of Nampula city, in Northern Mozambique. Overall 193,403 people were targeted by the campaign, which used a door-to-door strategy. During campaign follow-up, a population surve

Effectiveness of an oral cholera vaccine in Zanzibar: findings from a mass vaccination campaign and observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Zanzibar, in east Africa, has been severely and repeatedly affected by cholera since 1978. We assessed the effectiveness of oral cholera vaccination in high-risk populations in the archipelago to estimate the indirect (herd) protection conferred by the vaccine and direct vaccine effectiveness. METHODS: We offered two doses of a killed whole-cell B-subunit cholera vaccine to individuals aged 2 years and older in six rural and urban sites. To estimate vaccine direct protection, we compared the incidence of cholera between recipients and non-recipients using generalised estimating eq

MMR mass vaccination campaigns, vaccine-related adverse events, and the limits of the decision making process, in Brazil.

Vaccination is unquestionably a very important tool for disease control. However, vaccines can cause adverse events that may damage the public trust. In recent experience in Brazil, the implementation of mass campaigns with MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine was associated with outbreaks of vaccine adverse events. The decision-making process regarding the continuation of the use of this vaccine proceeded in the context of uncertainties, fears and contradictions between information from the scientific literature and data generated by a post-licensure monitoring. This experience showed how im

[Adaptability of the anti-hepatitis-B vaccine Recombivax HB to the Piazza protocol for the mass vaccination of newborn infants].

27 healthy babies born to HBsAg, antiHBs and antiHBc negative mothers were given three doses of hepatitis B vaccine "Recombivax HB" (5 micrograms/dose/0.5 ml) at 3, 5 and 11 months of age (Piazza's protocol). AntiHBs response was highly satisfactory. Since both in terms of seroconversion rate and of mean antiHBs titre immunogenicity of other hepatitis B vaccines given at 3, 5 and 11 months of age was already demonstrated, it is possible to conclude that Piazza's protocol is valid for all hepatitis B vaccines available in Italy and will certainly facilitate the compulsory hepatitis B vaccinatio

Pregnancy Outcomes after a Mass Vaccination Campaign with an Oral Cholera Vaccine in Guinea: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Since 2010, WHO has recommended oral cholera vaccines as an additional strategy for cholera control. During a cholera episode, pregnant women are at high risk of complications, and the risk of fetal death has been reported to be 2-36%. Due to a lack of safety data, pregnant women have been excluded from most cholera vaccination campaigns. In 2012, reactive campaigns using the bivalent killed whole-cell oral cholera vaccine (BivWC), included all people living in the targeted areas aged ≥ 1 year regardless of pregnancy status, were implemented in Guinea. We aimed to determine wheth

Safety of the yellow fever vaccine during the September 2001 mass vaccination campaign in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

In 2001, a vaccination campaign against yellow fever was carried out in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire. During the campaign and 4 weeks after an active surveillance system for adverse events following immunization (AEFI) was set up. More then 2.6 million doses were administered and 87 AEFI were notified. Eight suspected YF cases were reported after vaccination and considered as AEFI. However, none had IgM for YF and all recovered without sequels. This surveillance system provided reassuring data about the safety of the YF vaccine and proved that it is feasible to set up an active surveillance system d

Genomic epidemiology of Vibrio cholerae during a mass vaccination campaign of displaced communities in Bangladesh.

Ongoing diarrheal disease surveillance throughout Bangladesh over the last decade has revealed seasonal localised cholera outbreaks in Cox's Bazar, where both Bangladeshi Nationals and Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMNs) reside in densely populated settlements. FDMNs were recently targeted for the largest cholera vaccination campaign in decades. We aimed to infer the epidemic risk of circulating Vibrio cholerae strains by determining if isolates linked to the ongoing global cholera pandemic ("7PET" lineage) were responsible for outbreaks in Cox's Bazar. We found two sublineages of 7PE

Implementation of high coverage mass rabies vaccination in rural Uganda using predominantly static point methodology.

Despite successful eradication programmes in many regions, rabies remains responsible for approximately 60,000 human deaths annually, and no country in Africa is rabies-free. Dogs are the principal reservoir of the virus in Africa and the World Health Organisation recommends that at least 70% of the dog population be vaccinated in order to break the transmission cycle. Most attempts at mass rabies vaccinations in Africa have failed to vaccinate high numbers of dogs at a high coverage. Successful studies have often used a door-to-door (DTD) approach, which is logistically challenging and expens
