The Effects of Maternal Interleukin-17A on Social Behavior, Cognitive Function, and Depression-Like Behavior in Mice with Altered Kynurenine Metabolites.

Viral infection and chronic maternal inflammation during pregnancy are correlated with a higher prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, the pathoetiology of ASD is not fully understood; moreover, the key molecules that can cross the placenta following maternal inflammation and contribute to the development of ASD have not been identified. Recently, the pro-inflammatory cytokine, interleukin-17A (IL-17A) was identified as a potential mediator of these effects. To investigate the impact of maternal IL-17A on offspring, C57BL/6J dams were injected with IL-17A-expressing plasmids vi

Maternal gut microbiota disruption alters postpartum maternal behavior in association with modulation of stress responses and brain tryptophan metabolism in mice.

The maternal gut microbiota serves as a primary source of microbial transmission to offspring and plays a critical role in offspring development; however, its contribution to maternal mental states during the perinatal period remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated how perturbation of maternal gut microbiota during pregnancy affects postpartum behavior using a mouse model treated with non-absorbable antibiotics. Antibiotic-treated dams exhibited increased offspring mortality and altered maternal behavior during the postpartum period. These behavioral alterations were accompan

Effects of environmental enrichment and stereotypic behavior on maternal behavior and infant viability in a model carnivore, the American mink (Neovison vison).

In several species, stress compromises maternal behaviors that are important for infant viability (e.g. licking and grooming). Understanding how stress in captivity affects maternal behavior could therefore be beneficial, especially for carnivores in zoos and breeding centers where infant mortality is often high. We used a model carnivore--American mink--to test two hypotheses, namely that maternal investment and/or behavior is i. improved by environmental enrichment; and ii. compromised by stereotypic behavior. We observed 22 females raised in an indoor facility, 9 enriched, 13 non-enriched.

Maternal Sedentary Behavior and Breast Milk Extracellular Vesicle MicroRNA Across Pregnancy: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Human breast milk (HM) is the gold-standard nutritional source for infants, delivering not only macro- and micronutrients but also bioactive components, including extracellular vesicles (EVs) enriched with microRNAs (miRNAs) that regulate immune, metabolic, and neurodevelopmental programming. Maternal lifestyle, including nutrition, is known to shape milk composition, yet it remains unknown whether maternal physical activity modulates the bioactive miRNA cargo of HM EVs. METHODS: This pilot study examined associations between moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA

Chronic prenatal corticosterone exposure alters postpartum maternal behavior and shapes sex-specific offspring outcomes.

Stress during the prenatal period increases the risk in the next generation for negative health outcomes, including cardio-metabolic dysfunction and psychiatric diseases. To standardize prenatal exposure to stress hormone levels, we administered corticosterone (20 mg/kg s.c.) chronically (C-CORT) to pregnant mouse dams daily from gestational day 12-18. We monitored physiological, neural, and behavioral endpoints in dams and their offspring at adolescence and adulthood. Dams treated with C-CORT displayed increased anxiety-like behavior and altered maternal behavior, including increased time to

Maternal Distress Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and Changes in Young Children's Behavior.

OBJECTIVES: Given the known link between maternal and child mental health, it is likely that children whose mothers experienced more distress because of the COVID-19 pandemic were at greater risk for increased behavior problems. Yet research to date has not tested this hypothesis among families who were hit hardest by the pandemic-those with low incomes and from Black and Hispanic backgrounds. Research is also needed that focuses on young children and uses a longitudinal design. DESIGN: We harmonized data from 4 cohorts originally designed to study pediatric parenting interventions with under

Effects of Maternal Tetramethyl Bisphenol F Exposure on Neurodevelopment and Behavior in Mouse Offspring.

Bisphenol A (BPA) has long been used in plastics, resins, and food packaging materials; however, extensive research has demonstrated its reproductive, developmental, and endocrine-disrupting effects. Consequently, BPA has been increasingly restricted and replaced with structural analogues. Among these, tetramethyl bisphenol F (TMBPF) has emerged as one of the most widely used substitutes, particularly in epoxy resins and food-can coatings. Although initially regarded as a safer alternative, accumulating evidence suggests that TMBPF may exert multiple toxicological effects, raising concerns abo

Maternal behavior promotes resilience to adolescent stress in mice through a microglia-neuron axis.

Early life experience modulates resilience to stress in later life. Previous research implicated maternal care as a key mediator of behavioral responses to the adversity in adolescence, but details of molecular mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we show social stress activates transcription factor C/EBPβ in mPFC neurons of adolescent mice, which transcriptionally upregulates Dnm1l and promotes mitochondrial dysfunction, thereby conferring stress susceptibility in adolescent mice. Moreover, different maternal separation differentially regulates adolescent stress susceptibility. Mechanistically, t

Lifetime psychiatric morbidity and maternal smoking behavior in consecutive pregnancies: A Finnish register study.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the adverse effects of smoking during pregnancy, a large proportion of women who smoke during their first pregnancy endure smoking also in their subsequent one. Previous studies have made efforts to explore associated factors, such as maternal mood and stress. This observational register-based historical cohort study aims to investigate the association between prior psychiatric morbidity and maternal smoking during consecutive pregnancies. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study population comprised all women who smoked during their first pregnancy and had two singleton live bir

Neonatal Anoxia Impacts Rats' Maternal Behavior and Offspring Development due to Ultrasonic Vocalization's Impairment.

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy is a severe clinical condition, among others, affecting the brain after offspring exposure to neonatal anoxia, which causes persistent sensorimotor and cognitive deficits. During peripartum, maternal behaviors are crucial for the healthy development of the offspring. In rats, the vocalization of newborns, around 40 kHz, corresponds to separation calls that encourage their mothers to retrieve them. Alterations in this pattern affect the maternal behavior addressed to the offspring. This study aimed to evaluate the maternal behavior of primiparous rats whose offsp

Opium Effect in Pregnancy on the Dynamics of Maternal Behavior: Testing a Neurochemical Model.

BACKGROUND: Investigations into neurochemical mechanisms of opioid addiction are difficult due to the complexity of behavior and multiplicity of involved neurotransmitter and hormonal systems. The aim of this study was to examine the benefits of structured analysis of these mechanisms using the framework of the neurochemical model Functional Ensemble of Temperament (FET) and the example of maternal behavior under the condition of opium consumption in pregnancy. The FET differentiates between (a) endurance, (b) speed of integration, and (c) emotionality aspects of behavior suggesting that these

Infant frontal EEG asymmetry moderates the association between maternal behavior and toddler negative affectivity.

Relatively little work has examined potential interactions between child intrinsic factors and extrinsic environmental factors in the development of negative affect in early life. This work is important because high levels of early negative affectivity have been associated with difficulties in later childhood adjustment. We examined associations between infant frontal electroencephalogram (EEG), maternal parenting behaviors, and children's negative affect across the first two years of life. Infant baseline frontal EEG asymmetry was measured at 5 months; maternal sensitivity and intrusiveness w

Inflammatory neonatal pain disrupts maternal behavior and subsequent fear conditioning in a rodent model.

Infants spending extended time in the neonatal intensive care unit are at greater risk of developing a variety of mental health problems later in life, possibly due to exposure to painful/stressful events. We used a rodent model of inflammatory neonatal pain to explore effects on fear conditioning, somatosensory function and maternal behavior. Hindpaw injections of 2% λ-carrageenan on postnatal days 1 and 4 produced an attenuation in conditioned freezing during the postweaning period, similar to our previous work with acute pain, but did not cause lasting impacts on contextual freezing nor som

Maternal Immune Activation Alters Adult Behavior, Gut Microbiome and Juvenile Brain Oscillations in Ferrets.

Maternal immune activation (MIA) has been identified as a causal factor in psychiatric disorders by epidemiological studies in humans and mechanistic studies in rodent models. Addressing this gap in species between mice and human will accelerate the understanding of the role of MIA in the etiology of psychiatric disorders. Here, we provide the first study of MIA in the ferret (Mustela putorius furo), an animal model with a rich history of developmental investigations due to the similarities in developmental programs and cortical organization with primates. We found that after MIA by injection

Maternal androgen excess and obesity induce sexually dimorphic anxiety-like behavior in the offspring.

Maternal polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a condition associated with hyperandrogenism, is suggested to increase anxiety-like behavior in the offspring. Because PCOS is closely linked to obesity, we investigated the impact of an adverse hormonal or metabolic maternal environment and offspring obesity on anxiety in the offspring. The obese PCOS phenotype was induced by chronic high-fat-high-sucrose (HFHS) consumption together with prenatal dihydrotestosterone exposure in mouse dams. Anxiety-like behavior was assessed in adult offspring with the elevated-plus maze and open-field tests. The infl

Maternal hair testing to disclose self-misreporting in drinking and smoking behavior during pregnancy.

This study aimed to objectively verify smoking and drinking behavior during pregnancy and to disclose self-misreporting through maternal hair analysis. A total of 153 women attending a university hospital in Barcelona (Spain) were selected and interviewed after delivery, on their smoking and drinking habits during pregnancy. A 9-cm hair strand was collected and analyzed by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry for the presence of nicotine (NIC) and ethyl glucuronide (EtG) as biomarkers of tobacco and alcohol consumption, respectively. Concentrations of EtG <7 pg/mg hair and ≥30 pg/mg

mRNA expression of prolactin receptor in sheep pituitary and its effect on maternal behavior.

Prolactin receptor (PRLR) is the specific receptor for prolactin. Brain-specific control of PRLR gene expression is correlated with the induction of maternal behavior. The aim of this study was to investigate the dynamic changes in the PRLR mRNA level in the sheep pituitary gland and its effect on ewe maternal behavior. The mRNA expression of PRLR during non-pregnancy stage was maintained at low but detectable levels, as was the case during mid-gestation. After that, expression began increasing and reached a maximum during the early postpartum followed by a gradual decline during the mid-postp

Moderate maternal food restriction in mice impairs physical growth, behavior, and neurodevelopment of offspring.

Intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) occurs in 3% to 7% of all pregnancies. Recent human studies have indicated that neurodevelopmental disabilities, learning disorders, memory impairment, and mood disturbance are common in IUGR offspring. However, the interactions between IUGR and neurodevelopmental disorders are unclear because of the wide range of causes of IUGR, such as maternal malnutrition, placental insufficiency, pregnancy toxemia, and fetal malformations. Meanwhile, many studies have shown that moderate food restriction enhances spatial learning and improves mood disturbance in adul

Perceived child behavior problems, parenting stress, and maternal depressive symptoms among prenatal methamphetamine users.

The present study was designed to examine parenting stress, maternal depressive symptoms, and perceived child behavior problems among mothers who used methamphetamine (MA) during pregnancy. Participants were a subsample (n = 212; 75 exposed, 137 comparison) of biological mothers who had continuous custody of their child from birth to 36 months. The subsample was drawn from a larger, ongoing longitudinal study on the effects of prenatal methamphetamine exposure (n = 412; 204 exposed, 208 comparison) (Arria et al in Matern Child Health J 10:293-302 2006). Mothers who used MA during pregnancy rep
