Prenatal maternal HFD exposure impairs cognition via a hippocampal NMDA mechanism.

Maternal obesity increases the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders and cognitive impairments in offspring later in life. Most animal studies investigated the effects of maternal high-fat diet (HFD) from pre-mating to lactation on offspring neurodevelopment and cognitive function. However, the specific impact of in-utero exposure to maternal HFD on the cognitive function in offspring remains limited. In this study, female dams were fed laboratory chow or HFD for 11 weeks: 8 weeks before conception and during gestation. To isolate the prenatal effects, newborns were reared by foster mothers und

Risk of otitis media in offspring following maternal prenatal stress exposure.

OBJECTIVES: There is limited but consistent evidence that suggests prenatal factors, including maternal stress, may contribute to susceptibility for otitis media. We aimed to determine the effect of multiple life stress events during pregnancy on risk of acute and recurrent otitis media in offspring at three and five years of age. METHODS: Exposure data on stressful life events were collected from pregnant women in a longitudinal prospective pregnancy cohort study, at 18 and 34 weeks' gestation. We used longitudinal regression models stratified by offspring sex to examine associations between

Maternal LiCl exposure disrupts thyroid-cerebral axis in neonatal albino rats.

This work aimed to elucidate whether maternal lithium chloride (LiCl) exposure disturbs the thyroid-cerebral axis in neonatal albino rats. 50 mg of LiCl/kg b.wt. is orally given for pregnant Wistar rats from gestational day (GD) 1 to lactation day (LD) 28. The maternal administration of LiCl induced follicular dilatation and degeneration, hyperplasia, lumen obliteration and colloid vacuolation in the maternal and neonatal thyroid gland at postnatal days (PNDs) 14, 21 and 28. Neuronal degeneration (spongiform), gliosis, nuclear pyknosis, perivascular oedema, and meningeal hyperaemia were observ

Maternal Occupational Tobacco Exposure and Newborn Umbilical Cord Serum Leptin Concentration.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of maternal occupational tobacco handling (bidi rolling) on cord serum leptin levels. METHODS: We enrolled 64 neonates born to women who were bidi-rollers, and 64 small for gestational age (SGA) neonates and 57 term appropriate for gestational age (AGA) neonates born to mothers with no tobacco exposure. Cord blood leptin levels between the groups were compared. Adjusted mean difference in leptin was calculated using regression model. RESULTS: Cord leptin showed moderate correlation with birthweight (r=0.16; P=0.027) across the groups. Mean (SD) cord serum lept

Maternal Exposure to PM2.5 Affects Fetal Lung Development at Sensitive Windows.

Lung development continues from the embryonic period to adulthood. Previous epidemiological studies have noted that maternal exposure of atmospheric pollutants during the sensitive windows disturbed the lung development and increased the risk of lung diseases after birth, but the experimental evidence was insufficient. In the present study, we exposed plug-positive mice to PM2.5 (3 mg/kg b.w.) by oropharyngeal aspiration every other day, and intended to test whether maternal PM2.5 exposure affected prenatal lung development in the offspring. First, maternal PM2.5 exposure decreased embryo weig

Air pollution exposure during pregnancy: maternal asthma and neonatal respiratory outcomes.

PURPOSE: Maternal asthma increases adverse neonatal respiratory outcomes, and pollution may further increase risk. Air quality in relation to neonatal respiratory health has not been studied. METHODS: Transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN), asphyxia, and respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) were identified using medical records among 223,375 singletons from the Consortium on Safe Labor (2002-2008). Community Multiscale Air Quality models estimated pollutant exposures. Multipollutant Poisson regression models calculated adjusted relative risks of outcomes for interquartile range increases in

Maternal exposure to nanosized titanium dioxide suppresses embryonic development in mice.

Although nanoscale titanium dioxide (nano-TiO2) has been extensively used in industrial food applications and daily products for pregnant women, infants, and children, its potential toxicity on fetal development has been rarely studied. The main objective of this investigation was to establish the effects of maternal exposure of nano-TiO2 on developing embryos. Female imprinting control region mice were orally administered nano-TiO2 from gestational day 0 to 17. Our findings showed that Ti concentrations in maternal serum, placenta, and fetus were increased in nano-TiO2-exposed mice when compa

Maternal occupational exposure to ionizing radiation and major structural birth defects.

BACKGROUND: Ionizing radiation (IR) is known to be carcinogenic and mutagenic, but little is known about the association between maternal occupational exposure to IR and birth defects. METHODS: We studied 38,009 mothers who participated in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study and delivered between 1997 and 2009. We assessed odds ratios [ORs] for the association between maternal occupations with potential exposure to IR and 39 birth defects. RESULTS: We observed significant odds ratios (ORs) for isolated hydrocephaly (adjusted OR [AOR], 2.1; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.1-4.2), isol

Maternal farm exposure/ingestion of unpasteurized cow's milk and allergic disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The prevalence of allergic diseases has reached a high prevalence in affluent countries. Yet, there are areas and living conditions associated with very low rates which are attributable to environmental exposures. One example is the low prevalence of childhood asthma and allergies amongst children raised on farms, particularly those exposed to farm animals and unprocessed cow's milk very early in life which are being reviewed in this article. RECENT FINDINGS: Several studies have shown that maternal exposure to various farm animals in pregnancy is related to a reduced risk

Fetal hydrops, associated with maternal propylthiouracil exposure, reversed by intrauterine therapy.

Thyroid hormone is essential for fetal neurological development. Among other etiologies, fetal hypothyroidism may be caused by maternal exposure to antithyroid drugs (ATDs). The most common presentation of fetal hypothyroidism is fetal goiter, which can cause dystocia, in addition to airway obstruction in the neonate. Intra-amniotic treatment with levothyroxine normalizes fetal thyroid status and reduces goiter size. We present a case of fetal hypothyroidism diagnosed in a patient who was treated with propylthiouracil (PTU) for Grave's disease. The fetus had marked hydrops fetalis and a large

[Metopic craniosynostosis, probable effect of intrauterine exposure to maternal valproate treatment].

UNLABELLED: Metopic craniosynostosis may be an adverse effect of valproic acid exposed fetus. CASES: We report two infants with metopic craniosynostosis, born to mothers who were treated with valproic acid. In one case, a prenatal diagnosis was made. In the other case, only the male dizygotic twin was affected. CONCLUSION: Trigonocephaly may be a symptom of valproate embryofoetopathy detectable by antenatal ultrasound examination.

Early postnatal diazepam exposure facilitates maternal behavior in virgin female rats.

Virgin female rats do not display maternal behavior if they are not exposed to the pups during several days. This exposure is called induction. In this work we have studied the effects of early postnatal (PO-P16) diazepam (DZ) administration (1 and 2.5 mg/kg, SC) on the display of maternal behavior of virgin female rats when adults. Although we did not find statistically significant differences between P0-P16 DZ treated and control females with respect to the latency of retrieval, P0-P16 DZ administration resulted in a statistically significant increase of the percentage of female rats that be

Maternal nicotine exposure enhances cutaneous axon reflexes in the neonatal rat.

Chronic nicotine exposure enhances axon reflexes in adult rats. Since smoking mothers expose their infants to nicotine, this study investigated whether late gestational and or lactational maternal nicotine exposure affects neonatal axon reflexes. Osmotic pumps, implanted subcutaneously in adult female rats, delivered either nicotine (5 mg kg-1 day-1) or saline. Axon reflex responses of infant progeny, evoked by iontophoresis of 2 mC acetylcholine, were measured by laser Doppler flowmetry. Nicotine-exposed infants showed significantly enhanced axon reflexes during both gestational and lactation

Consequences of prenatal maternal alcohol exposure including the fetal alcohol syndrome.

1. Some recent findings on fetal alcohol effects are presented under the headings of introduction, classification--clinical signs and symptoms, epidemiology, etiology--possible pathogenesis, diagnosis, prognosis, management, discussion and conclusions. 2. The present level of knowledge suggests that the toxic effects of alcohol on the fetus may be a health hazard of significant proportion and that further clinical investigation and basic science research studies are indicated.
