Trends in maternal health/healthcare in low-income countries and the implications on neonatal health.

Maternal health in low-income countries has received increasing attention over the last 15-20 years. Maternal mortality ratios in these countries are mainly still modelled estimates and one cannot discern trends. The introduction of registration systems-giving reliable causes of death-is essential both for monitoring maternal health and fuelling action. Countries with documented success in reducing maternal mortality have used systematic, incremental approaches, often tied to multi-sectoral efforts, including roads, communication links, education, water and sanitation. Improving maternal healt

Exploring the impact of health worker strikes on maternal and child health in a Kenyan county.

BACKGROUND: Studies of the impact of health care workers' strikes tend to look at facility-level activity rather than populations, with evidence from low and middle-income countries relatively sparse. This study explored the effect of national strikes on maternal and child health. It looked at the impact on health system activity in both public and non-public sectors (e.g. private, faith-based), on health promotion investments like immunisation, and on disease detection like post-partum haemorrhage (PPH). A 100 day doctors' strike started in December 2016, a 150 day nurses strike from June 201

[Is abortion a serious public health problem in Chile in the field of maternal-perinatal health?].

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization, by 2014, estimates that approximately 22 million unsafe abortions take place every year in the world, almost all of them in developing countries. The Millennium Goals, as part of the fifth compendium, focused on maternal health by proposing that member states should reduce maternal mortality to 75% by 2015. AIM: To determine, using maternal health indicators, if abortion in Chile is a priority health problem. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data about maternal mortality and its causes between 1982 and 2014, was obtained from the databases available at the Chi

Maternal and newborn health services in Papua New Guinea: Health system stakeholder priorities for health system strengthening.

Papua New Guinea (PNG) has one of the highest maternal and newborn morbidity and mortality rates in the Asia-Pacific region, with the COVID-19 pandemic exposing longstanding system weaknesses. This study examines established health system gaps affecting maternal and newborn health (MNH) outcomes in PNG, identifies those considered both high-priority and feasible to address by local stakeholders, and highlights locally driven solutions for sustainable improvements. Qualitative data were collected using card-sorting, with analysis guided by the AAAQ framework (Availability, Accessibility, Accept

Beyond Birth: Maternal Mental Health Program after Traumatic Birth.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy is typically considered to be a joyous time, but complications during birth can be traumatizing for patients and their families, affecting their mental health and well-being. Traumatic births are linked to postpartum mental health conditions like depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, leading to significant consequences for mothers, infants, and families. PURPOSE: This quality improvement project sought to evaluate whether addressing perinatal trauma through debriefing mitigates the effects of perinatal trauma. METHODS: A program was implemented at a high-risk l

Effects of Maternal Vitamin D Supplementation on Childhood Health.

Vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of health issues in the offspring. Accordingly, recent Endocrine Society guidelines strongly support supplementation in pregnancy, also underlining that without consensus on optimal maternal vitamin D levels, routine screening is currently irrelevant. Knowledge of organ-specific effects of vitamin D and its association with maternal vitamin D status may aid in optimizing vitamin D supplementation. This systematic review outlines the proposed next-generation effects of vitamin D supplementation ≥400 IU/d and explores whe

Mpox surge in West Africa: Unmet maternal health needs.

In the first half of 2025, mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) cases in West Africa appear to have multiplied, straining already-fragile health systems, diverting resources, and raising questions about maternal health implications. In 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) deemed mpox infections a public health emergency of international concern.1 With global donor funds at a low due to the withdrawal of the US from the World Health Organization (WHO), a scratched US Agency for International Development (USAID), and US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) cutbacks, it is an inopp

Metabolic theory of preeclampsia: implications for maternal cardiovascular health.

Preeclampsia (PE) is a multisystemic disorder of pregnancy that not only causes perinatal mortality and morbidity but also has a long-term toll on the maternal and fetal cardiovascular system. Women diagnosed with PE are at greater risk for the subsequent development of hypertension, ischemic heart disease, cardiomyopathy, cerebral edema, seizures, and end-stage renal disease. Although PE is considered heterogeneous, inefficient extravillous trophoblast (EVT) migration leading to deficient spiral artery remodeling and increased uteroplacental vascular resistance is the likely initiation of the

Maternal microbiota and gestational diabetes: impact on infant health.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common complication of pregnancy that has been associated with an increased risk of obesity and diabetes in the offspring. Pregnancy is accompanied by tightly regulated changes in the endocrine, metabolic, immune, and microbial systems, and deviations from these changes can alter the mother's metabolism resulting in adverse pregnancy outcomes and a negative impact on the health of her infant. Maternal microbiomes are significant drivers of mother and child health outcomes, and many microbial metabolites are likely to influence the host health. This revi

Maternal and Child Health, Non-Communicable Diseases and Metabolites.

Mothers influence the health and disease trajectories of their children, particularly during the critical developmental windows of fetal and neonatal life reflecting the gestational-fetal and lactational-neonatal phases. As children grow and develop, they are exposed to various stimuli and insults, such as metabolites, that shape their physiology and metabolism to impact their health. Non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and mental illness, have high global prevalence and are increasing in incidence. Non-communicable diseases often overlap with maternal a

Peripartum and Long-Term Maternal Cardiovascular Health After Preeclampsia.

There is widespread acceptance of the increased prevalence of cardiovascular diseases occurring within 1 to 2 decades in women following a preeclamptic pregnancy. More recent evidence suggests that the deranged biochemical and echocardiographic findings in women do not resolve in the majority of preeclamptic women following giving birth. Many women continue to be hypertensive in the immediate postnatal period with some exhibiting occult signs of cardiac dysfunction. There is now promising evidence that with close monitoring and effective control of blood pressure control in the immediate postn

Maternal weight and gestational diabetes impacts on child health.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review recent evidence linking maternal body mass index and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) with offspring health outcomes. RECENT FINDINGS: It is now established that the rising prevalences of maternal obesity and GDM are both making substantial contributions to the growing burden of childhood obesity and associated disorders. Strengthening evidence also links maternal obesity with increased offspring risks of cardiovascular disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, lower respiratory tract infections during infancy, wheezing illnesses, asthma and attention deficit

Maternal Health after Stillbirth: Postpartum Hospital Readmission in California.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to assess whether the risk of postpartum readmission within 6 weeks of giving birth differs for women who had stillbirths compared with live births. STUDY DESIGN: Using data from the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development in California, we performed a population-based cohort study of 7,398,640 births between 1999 and 2011. We identified diagnoses and procedures associated with the first postpartum hospital readmission that occurred within 6 weeks after giving birth. We used log-binomial models to estimate relative risk (RR) of postpartum readmi

Using Mitochondrial Trifunctional Protein Deficiency to Understand Maternal Health.

Fatty acid oxidation disorders unfortunately can result in the sudden unexplained death of infants. Mitochondrial trifunctional protein (MTP) deficiency is one such disease where long-chain fatty acids cannot be fully oxidized through beta-oxidation which, can lead to cardiac arrythmias in an infant. Furthermore, mothers who are carrying an MTP deficient fetus have a prevalence for pregnancy complications, especially AFLP, acute fatty liver of pregnancy and HELLP syndrome. To better understand the etiology of the potential pro-arrhythmic state the MTP deficient infants may enter, we developed
