Recurrent ossifying epulis in a dog.

A seven-year-old neutered/male Siberian Husky-cross dog was referred for evaluation of a gingival mass. Two years previously, the referring veterinarian had resected an ossifying epulis from the same area between the maxillary left first and second premolars. The neoplasm recurred 4-months after the original surgery. En bloc resection provided tumor-free margins. An oral examination 12-months following surgery indicated no gross signs of recurrence.

Maxillary desmoplastic fibroma with initial symptoms suggestive of sinusitis.

Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is a benign intra-osseous neoplasm characterized by the formation of abundant collagen fibers. It arises most commonly in the jaws and exhibits local aggressiveness and high recurrence rates after local resection. An uncommon case of expansive DF involving the right maxilla, maxillary sinus, and inferior orbital wall of a 49-year-old man whose initial symptoms were similar to acute sinusitis is presented, and the criteria for diagnosis and clinical management are discussed.

Surgical Management of Ossifying Fibroma in Maxilla: Report of Two Cases.

Ossifying fibroma is a rare benign osteogenic neoplasm arising from undifferentiated cells of the periodontal ligament. Ossifying fibroma have a well-defined border that differentiates it from fibrous dysplasia clinically, these tumors manifest as a round or ovoid, expansile, painless, slow-growing mass may displace the roots of adjacent teeth and also cause root resorption. They occur at second to fourth decade of life. Radiologically the lesion appears as a dense radiopaque mass surrounded by a thin, well-defined regular radiolucent rim. Patient underwent thorough history taking and complete

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumour of the left maxillary sinus.

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumours (pPNETs) are highly malignant, small-cell neoplasms found mainly in children and young adults. Recent advances in immunohistochemistry and genetic typing have led to reports of a close relationship between pPNET and the previously difficult-to-classify Ewing's sarcoma. We report a case of pPNET involving the left maxillary sinus in a 23-year-old female who presented with a 2-month history of unilateral left-sided nasal obstruction, rhinorrhoea and recurrent bloody nasal discharge. A CT scan of the paranasal sinuses showed a large mass (10 x 7 x 3 cm

Hearing loss associated with maxillectomy.

Little has been reported about the effect on auditory tube function of ablative surgery for maxillary neoplasms. Operations on the muscles of the soft palate may cause conductive hearing loss by impairing the opening of the auditory tube, which results in a middle ear effusion. Sensorineural hearing loss may also follow adjuvant radiotherapy. In this retrospective study we aimed to assess hearing status in patients who had undergone maxillary surgery for neoplastic disease between 1987 and 1997. Data recorded included personal details, site and size of lesion, treatment, and histology. Thirty-

Odontogenic Myxoma of the Maxilla: A Report of Unusual Pediatric Case.

Odontogenic myxoma (OM) is a rare and locally benign neoplasm of high aggressive behavior found exclusively in the jaws. OM commonly occurs in the second and third decade, its quite rare to find in maxilla that to invading the maxillary sinus completely. The lesion often grows without symptoms and presents as a painless swelling. The radiographic features are variable, and the diagnosis is therefore not easy. This article presents a case of OM of maxilla in a 13-year-old boy, which was previously diagnosed as fibrosseous lesion with the help of CT.

Ameloblastic fibrosarcoma of the maxillary sinus in an infant: a case report with long-term follow-up.

Ameloblastic fibrosarcoma (AFS) or ameloblastic sarcoma is an extremely rare odontogenic neoplasm. The authors report AFS in the maxillary sinus of a 4-month-old boy. The tumor was composed of odontogenic epithelium, resembling that of ameloblastoma, and a mesenchymal part exhibiting features of fibrosarcoma. We also found some areas with deposition of dentinoid material closely adjacent to the ameloblastic epithelium. Although AFS has occurred in a wide age range, this is the first report of this tumor in infancy with long-term follow-up.

Cholesterol granuloma of the jaws: report of two cases.

Cholesterol granuloma (CG) is a foreign body reaction to the deposition and inadequate drainage of cholesterol crystals that are frequently found in association with chronic middle ear diseases but an uncommon entity in maxillary sinuses. The clinical symptoms are non-specific and depend on the localization and extent in each individual case. Bone erosion may be seen in cholesterol granuloma showing expansive growth. The differential diagnosis of CG includes cysts, mucocoeles and neoplasms. Radiological and histopathological findings are essential for diagnosis of CG. In this report it is aime

Extranasopharyngeal angiofibroma of the nasal septum: a rare clinical entity.

Angiofibromas (AFs) are benign, potentially local aggressive, and rich vascular neoplasms that originate from posterior lateral wall of the nasopharynx in adolescent males. However, they could be encountered in sites other than nasopharynx. The maxillary sinus is the most common location of extranasopahryngeal AFs. The nasal septum is an extremely rare location, and only 15 cases had been reported in literature. In this present case, an unusual extranasal AF originating from the anterior part of the nasal septum is reported with its clinical, laboratory, and treatment options and theories prop

Indolent palatal swelling: Catch 22.

We present an interesting but intriguing case of an indolent palatal swelling. The lesion was asymptomatic causing little discomfort to the patient and thus was an incidental clinical finding. Provisional diagnosis was a benign, minor salivary gland tumor. Clinical differential diagnoses included benign lymphoepithelial lesion or mucus extravasation phenomenon. Nevertheless, we also considered malignancies such as mucoepidermoid carcinoma, lymphoma, and neoplasm of the maxillary sinus. However, the histopathology revealed a rare clinicopathologic entity prompting immediate treatment of the les

Cancellous osteoma of the maxillary tuberosity: case report.

The osteoma is a benign, bone-forming lesion that is not considered a true neoplasm. It almost exclusively affects the flat bones of the skull and face. Jaw lesions may cause facial deformity and impair oral function. Multiple osteomas may be associated with Gardner's syndrome. Clinically and radiographically, osteomas may need to be differentiated from other bone-forming lesions. This article describes a cancellous osteoma of the left maxillary molar and tuberosity area and differentiates it from other benign and malignant lesions, including the parosteal osteosarcoma.

Keratocystic odontogenic tumour (KCOT) misdiagnosed as a dentigerous cyst.

Keratocystic odontogenic tumours are known for their peculiar behaviour, varied origin, debated development, unique tendency to recur and disputed treatment modalities. Thus, it has been the subject of much research over the last 40 years. It was formerly known as odontogenic keratocyst (OKC). OKC received its new title as keratocystic odontogenic tumour (KCOT) by the WHO (2005) in order to suggest its aggressive and recurrent nature. KCOT is a benign intraosseous neoplasm of the jaw. Involvement of the maxillary sinus is an unusual presentation. We present the case of an 11-year-old child wit

Nasopharyngeal angiofibroma. surgical approach using a transoral Le Fort I osteotomy following embolization: a case report.

Nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (NA) is a rare vascular benign nonencapsulated neoplasm, characterized by local aggressiveness and destructive potential, typically diagnosed in adolescent males. We report a case of NA affecting a 15-year-old male that presented with a persistent nasal obstruction and epistaxis with 1 year of evolution. Clinical and radiological patterns pointed out a differential diagnosis of NA. Arteriography demonstrates the vascular support of the tumor and evinces the embolization of the internal maxillary artery. The surgical approach was procedure by Le Fort I osteotomy expo

Clinical management of a patient with advanced mucosal malignant melanoma in the sinonasal area.

We describe a case of mucosal malignant melanoma in the sinonasal area of a 65-year-old woman. She presented with a history of nasal obstruction and epistaxis with subsequent tenderness, facial anesthesia involving cranial nerve V2, red eye, proptosis, diplopia, and conjunctival chemosis. Computed tomography detected a nonspecific solid mass that had involved the left maxillary sinus and surrounding tissues, with extension into the nasal cavity and invasion of the orbital floor and eye muscles. Histopathologic examination of the neoplasm revealed that it was a malignant melanoma. We performed

Ossifying fibroma in a miniature rex rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus).

In humans and animals, ossifying fibroma is a benign neoplasm that most frequently affects the mandible, often resulting in cosmetic deformities and malocclusion. It is considered rare in animals and most frequently affects young horses. A surgical biopsy of a solitary mass located beneath the gingiva in the right maxillary region, which had overgrown teeth and expanded the adjacent hard palate from a 6-year-old miniature Rex rabbit was submitted for light microscopic examination. The submitted incisional biopsy specimen was pale pink, firm, and nodular. Histopathologically, the neoplasm was c

Aggressive inflammatory pseudotumor of the maxillary sinus and orbit.

Inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT) is a rare, locally aggressive, benign neoplasm of unknown etiology. It is uncommon in the head and neck region, particularly in the paranasal sinuses. We present an unusual case of IPT of the maxillary sinus and orbit in a 27-year-old woman who presented with cheek swelling, right orbital swelling, double vision, and associated fever and trismus. Computed tomography identified a mass with radiologic features suggestive of a malignancy of the maxillary sinus and orbit; the mass extended into the infratemporal fossa, parapharyngeal space, anterior antral wall, and

The use of Le Fort I Approach in the resection of an extensive ossifying fibroma.

INTRODUCTION: Ossifying fibroma (OF) is a well-defined benign neoplasm characterized by slow growth and predilection for the posterior mandible site, usually treated by conservative surgical approaches. In this context, Le Fort I Approach (LFIA) has been increasingly used providing good visualization and an easy access to the lesion. It also allows removal of the lesion quickly. Although there are case reports using LFIA for the management of benign neoplasms, odontogenic cysts and tumors of the middle third of face, to our knowledge, only one article describes the use of surgical LFIA for OF
