Extrapulmonary small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the paranasal sinuses: a case report and review of the literature.

Primary small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the paranasal sinuses is an extremely rare and distinctive tumor with aggressive clinical behavior. We report on a patient who had a small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the ethmoid sinus with invasion of the upper aspect of the right maxillary sinus and medial aspect of the right orbit. After 2 cycles of chemotherapy that were unsuccessful, he underwent radiotherapy with complete tumor remission. Local recurrence was not identified after 11 months of follow-up; however, distant metastasis developed 2 months after radiotherapy. The natural histo

Dental radiology and oral pathology.

This article represents an overview of normal and pathological findings of the oral structures for the practicing radiologist. Some of the disease processes discussed are of dental etiology, whereas others are manifestations of systemic diseases. Normal tooth development is described followed by an overview of radiolucent, radiopaque, and mixed lucent-opaque lesions. In the radiolucent category, normal anatomical landmarks of the jaws include the mental foramen, manidbular canal, incisive canal and maxillary sinuses. Other lucencies that represent normal structures or variations include develo

Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma. An aggressive neoplasm derived from schneiderian epithelium and distinct from olfactory neuroblastoma.

Eight cases of a highly aggressive undifferentiated carcinoma of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are described. The patients, who ranged in age from 30-77 years, had multiple sinonasal symptoms, and each had involvement of the nasal cavity, maxillary antrum, and ethmoid sinus. Six tumors extended into the orbital bones, and five penetrated the cranial cavity. Five patients died of disease from 1 to 41 months after diagnosis (median: 4 months), and three are alive with tumor less than 1 year following diagnosis. Microscopically, the neoplasms formed nests, trabeculae, and sheets containi

Pseudomyogenic Hemangioendothelioma Arising in the Maxillary Sinus, an Uncommon and Misdiagnosed Tumor: A Case Report.

Pseudomyogenic hemangioendothelioma (PMHE) is a rare vascular neoplasm with an intermediate to low-grade malignant potential. Only 5% of PMHEs occur in the head and neck. This tumor exhibits different histological patterns and mimics other vascular tumors, myoid tumors, or carcinomas. The distinction between these tumors can be a very challenging situation for pathologists. In this article, we report the first case, to our knowledge, of PMHE arising in the maxillary sinus, to highlight this uncommon entity and discuss differential diagnoses.

Prelacrimal approach vs conventional surgery for inverted papilloma in the maxillary sinus.

BACKGROUND: The prelacrimal approach, termed endoscopic modified medial maxillectomy (EMMM), has recently been applied for treatment of inverted papilloma (IP) in the maxillary sinus. EMMM provides wider access to the maxillary sinus while preserving the inferior turbinate and nasolacrimal duct. METHODS: We reviewed patients with IP in the maxillary sinus to compare the surgical results obtained by conventional surgery (ie, endoscopic maxillary sinus antrostomy or in combination with the Caldwell-Luc approach) with those obtained by EMMM. RESULTS: All patients had a T3 on the Krouse staging

Long-term clinical and radiologic documentation of a maxillary odontogenic myxoma from early clinical signs to implant-supported prosthodontic rehabilitation: Case report and review of the literature.

Odontogenic myxoma (OM) is a non-metastasizing neoplasm of mesenchymal origin, arising in the tooth-bearing areas of the jaws. When regarding the whole spectrum of differential diagnoses for osteolytic jaw lesions, OM constitutes a benign tumor rarely located in the maxilla. Radiographically, displacement of teeth and frequent involvement of the sinus will be found with advanced maxillary OM. The tumor can be removed by means of several techniques, ranging from conservative measures to extended surgical procedures that differ according to type of bone resection and reconstruction of the defect

Ameloblastic Fibrosarcoma Arising in the Maxilla.

BACKGROUND: Ameloblastic fibrosarcoma (AFS) is a rare odontogenic neoplasm of the jaw that usually arises de novo or through a malignant change in the mesenchymal component of a preexisting or recurrent benign fibroma. The majority of AFS cases reported in the literature arise in the mandible. CASE REPORT: A 35-year-old male presented with an asymptomatic left maxillary mass that on imaging was found to be effacing most of his maxillary sinus. He underwent a left maxillectomy with free-flap reconstruction and adjuvant radiotherapy to the tumor bed. CONCLUSION: Wide local excision remains the

Maxillary desmoplastic fibroma with initial symptoms suggestive of sinusitis.

Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is a benign intra-osseous neoplasm characterized by the formation of abundant collagen fibers. It arises most commonly in the jaws and exhibits local aggressiveness and high recurrence rates after local resection. An uncommon case of expansive DF involving the right maxilla, maxillary sinus, and inferior orbital wall of a 49-year-old man whose initial symptoms were similar to acute sinusitis is presented, and the criteria for diagnosis and clinical management are discussed.

Angiofibroma from the tail of the inferior turbinate.

Nasopharyngeal angiofibromas are benign and vascular neoplasms, which originate characteristically in the posterior lateral wall of the nasopharynx. They account for less than 0.5% of all head and neck tumours. Although angiofibromas extend beyond the nasopharynx usually, they rarely originate outside the nasopharynx. Reports of primary extranasopharyngeal angiofibromas have appeared sporadically in the literature. The maxillary sinus is the most common site involved, while the inferior turbinate represents an extremely rare localization. We report a case of angiofibroma which arising from the

Pediatric intraosseous schwannoma in maxillary sinus: A case report with review of literature.

Neurilemmoma has been defined as a benign, encapsulated neoplasm that arises in the nerve fiber. It originates from the proliferation of Schwann cells in the perineurium causing displacement and compression of the adjacent nerve. This neoplasm is composed primarily of Schwann cells in a poorly collagenized stroma. It can occur in any age group. Neurilemmoma occurs all over the body including the head and neck region. In the head and neck region, 25%-40% of schwannoma cases have been reported. Occurrences of intraoral schwannomas are rare with reported prevalence being 1%. In the present articl

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma arising from the maxillary sinus: a case report.

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma is a very infrequent, locally aggressive vascular neoplasm, characterized by fascicular spindle cell proliferation. It occurs almost exclusively in infants and adolescents, and is often associated with Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon. The tumor is predominantly located subcutaneously or in the deep soft tissue of the extremities and trunk, peritoneum, or retroperitoneum. However, this tumor can sometimes be located on the head and neck. We report a case of kaposiform hemangioendothelioma of the maxillary sinus in a 4-month-old female infant presenting with cheek swe

In the years 1986-91, five patients with neoplasms of neurolemmal sheath were treated in the Department of Otolaryngology, Medical University in Cracow. Two patients suffered from malignant neurinoma (malignant neurinoma of orbit or maxillary sinus) and the other three had neurinoma (neurinoma of the floor of mouth, nasal cavity and neck). There were four men and one woman. The age of patients ranged from 23 to 52 years. The tumors were surgically removed, patients with malignant neurinoma required additional irradiation. Currently, no tumor recurrence has been noticed.
