The pattern of combined maxillofacial and cervical spine fractures.

PURPOSE: Prompt recognition of cervical fractures in patients with facial fractures is of prime importance, as failure to diagnose such injuries carries a significant risk of causing neurologic abnormalities, long-term disabilities, and even death. The aim of this retrospective case study is to describe the different patterns of combinations of maxillofacial and cervical spine (C-spine) injuries to provide guidance in diagnosis and care of patients with combined injuries. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The trauma directory of 1 academic institution was searched for records of 701 patients admitted wit

Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type III Recognized After Delayed Recovery From Neuromuscular Blockade After an Orthognathic Surgery.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive neuromuscular disease characterized by the degeneration of alpha motor neurons in the spinal cord, resulting in progressive proximal muscle weakness and paralysis. SMA is classified into types I-IV based on the age at symptom onset or maximum motor function achieved, and its clinical manifestations vary. SMA affects maxillofacial growth because of muscle dysfunction and results in abnormal maxillofacial morphology. In addition, definitive diagnosis is not often made because of the older onset age and symptoms are rarely severe. Therefore,

Case report of malocclusion with abnormal head posture and TMJ symptoms.

Abnormal cervical muscle function can cause abnormal head posture, adversely affecting the development and morphology of the cervical spine and maxillofacial skeleton, which in turn leads to facial asymmetry and occlusal abnormality. There can be morphologic abnormalities of the mandibular fossa, condyle, ramus, and disk accompanying the imbalance of the cervical and masticatory muscles activities. Two normally growing Japanese female patients with Class II Division 1 malocclusion presented with TMJ symptoms and poor head posture as a result of abnormal sternocleidomastoid and trapezius cervic

[Modern imaging of maxillofacial deformities].

Facial malformations make a wide chapter of maxillofacial abnormalities whose treatment needs an accurate clinical-instrumental analysis to quantify malformation entity and to agree on precise lesion classification and subsequent management. Maxillofacial abnormalities are classified as congenital, growth-related and acquired. Congenital deformities include the alterations present at birth, i.e., craniofacial stenosis, oto-mandibular syndrome. Treacher-Collins and Goldenhar syndrome, facial clefts and lip-palate clefts. Growth-related malformations include the deformities appearing during grow

Gardner syndrome with maxillofacial manifestation: A case report.

Gardner syndrome is a hereditary disease in which patients develop gastrointestinal polyps, osteomas, desmoid tumors, epidermoid cysts, fibromas, lipomas, and retinal lesions. Dental abnormalities such as supernumerary or impacted teeth, odontomas and dentigerous cysts are also reported. The most serious concern in this syndrome is the extremely high risk of gastrointestinal polyps undergoing malignant transformation. Since the maxillofacial findings usually precede gastrointestinal polyps, the dentist plays a crucial role in the diagnosis of Gardner syndrome, and panoramic radiography is an i

Emerging role of alternative splicing in oral and maxillofacial development.

The excision of introns and subsequent ligation of exons in precursor messenger RNA (pre-mRNA) is a fundamental mechanism requisite for the expression of eukaryotic genes. Alternative splicing (AS) serves as a potent amplifying factor, augmenting the spectrum of protein isoforms that can emanate from a singular genetic locus, thereby bolstering proteomic diversity. Perturbations in the regulatory framework of pre-mRNA splicing have been associated with an extensive array of pathological conditions. Oral and maxillofacial morphogenesis, a multifaceted process governed by intricate molecular int

Comprehensive prosthetic rehabilitation of a case of the orofacial digital syndrome.

Maxillofacial defects can result from trauma, treatment of neoplasm, or congenital malformations. Many a time due to the size, location of the defect, or because of the patient's medical condition, surgical reconstruction may not be possible. In these cases, rehabilitation is indicated with the help of a maxillofacial prosthesis. Orofacial digital syndrome (OFDS) is a congenital anomaly that affects the development of the mouth, face, and digits. Such abnormalities or defects compromise form, function, esthetics, and social acceptance and deeply affect the psychological status of an individual

Fibular free flap with proximal perforator skin paddle due to aberrant anatomy - a case report.

BACKGROUND: The fibular free flap is considered one of the most valuable options for mandible reconstruction. A perforator flap has gained widespread acceptance in oral and maxillofacial reconstruction. Typically, the fibula flap is obtained primarily with the distal perforator due to its reliable blood supply, with less attention given to the proximal perforators during the harvesting process. Normally, the distal perforator of the fibula exhibits stability and shows limited anatomical variations. However, there have been reported cases in which the distal perforator is absent. At times, thes

Craniofacial and intraoral phenotype of Robinow syndrome forms.

Robinow syndrome (RS) is a rare genetic condition with two inheritance forms, autosomal dominant RS (DRS) and autosomal recessive RS (RRS). The characteristic features of this syndrome overlap in both inheritance forms, which make the clinical differential diagnosis difficult, especially in isolated cases. The objective of this study was to identify differences in the craniofacial and intraoral phenotype of patients with DRS and RRS. The characteristics and frequency of 13 facial and 13 intraoral clinical features associated with both DRS and RRS were assessed by direct dysmorphology examinati

Interpositional collagenated cancellous bone blocks for nasal dorsum augmentation: A new technique for nasomaxillary hypoplasia treatment.

Nasomaxillary hypoplasia is a rare congenital malformation involving the middle third of the face. The present paper describes a novel technique for restoring the nasal projection in a patient with nasomaxillary hypoplasia, analyses its advantages and limitations, and discusses its potential applicability in other similar contexts. After orthognathic surgery, lateral osteotomies of the nasal bones were performed integrally with a piezoelectric device using a long cutting saw tip through the intraoral approach. The nasal bones were then projected by interpositioning two triangular-shaped collag

Is palato-premaxillary subduction a characteristic of Binder's syndrome?

OBJECTIVES: Binder's syndrome is a rare malformative syndrome, defined clinically. CT study of a patient with this morphotype found palato-premaxillary joint subduction on a sagittal slice. The objective of the present study was to analyze this joint in a control population free of Binder's syndrome. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty adult Caucasian patients who had undergone sinus CT scan between 2013 and 2016, showing normal nasolabial angle and with good visualization of the palato-premaxillary joint on a single sagittal slice, were selected. Joint analysis by 3 observers classified the patients

Orofacial Muscles: Embryonic Development and Regeneration after Injury.

Orofacial congenital defects such as cleft lip and/or palate are associated with impaired muscle regeneration and fibrosis after surgery. Also, other orofacial reconstructions or trauma may end up in defective muscle regeneration and fibrosis. The aim of this review is to discuss current knowledge on the development and regeneration of orofacial muscles in comparison to trunk and limb muscles. The orofacial muscles include the tongue muscles and the branchiomeric muscles in the lower face. Their main functions are chewing, swallowing, and speech. All orofacial muscles originate from the mesode
