When a deadly non-missile object like a teta gets impacted in the maxillofacial region, the management becomes challenging. This region has a complex anatomical structure with high vascularity and contains vital structures like the orbit and airway. To avoid ophthalmic or neurological abnormalities in addition to the risk of infection and bleeding, accurate clinical and radiological diagnosis and optimal surgical techniques with postoperative management are crucial. This paper emphasizes the significance of careful preoperative planning and a concerted effort of the multidisciplinary team in m

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the impact of maxillofacial injury on skull base.
METHODS: A three-dimensional(3D)finite-element model of cranio-maxillofacial bone was established by CT scan data. A lead cylinder in base diameter of 3 cm was designed as an impactor. There regions(upper right maxilla, left infraorbital margin and left zygomatic body)subjected to an impact at the speed of 8.6 m/s(about 30 km/h)was simulated. Thirteen landmarks at the skull base were selected. The values of stress at the end of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 ms were obtained, and the results were analyzed.
RESULTS: The dynamic proce

An unusual case of penetrating maxillofacial injury caused by a nail gun is presented. In this case, the foreign body was shot into the left infratemporal fossa and maxillary sinus through the left cheek. We used an intraoral approach that allowed precise localization of the point of the infratemporal surface of the maxilla through which the nail penetrated the maxillary sinus. The nail was successfully removed and the patient was discharged with complete recovery. The details of the surgical approach as well as localization techniques are described. Different approaches to remove the nail as

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons in Iraq are practicing in a paradoxical situation where a high number of extensive injuries are accompanied by limited resources. Steps of management should be followed cautiously in attempts to reduce residual deformities that characterize the end results of severe missile injuries. This study elucidate lessons extirpated from surgical experience in the management of diversity of causalities with special emphasis on the intermediate phase of management as well as different modalities of treatment, trying to get best benefit from available resources.

PURPOSE: E-cigarettes have become increasingly popular devices used to consume nicotine in recent years. There is a growing body of evidence regarding the risk of spontaneous explosion of these devices causing burn and projectile injuries. The primary purpose of this review was to summarize all injuries to the oral and maxillofacial region secondary to explosion of e-cigarettes. The secondary purpose was to propose an initial management algorithm for such injuries based on the findings in the literature. This review also aims to test the hypothesis that e-cigarette explosive injuries to the or

Traumatic maxillary artery pseudoaneurysm is an uncommonly reported complication in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. It is usually discovered incidentally, either early after trauma or weeks-to-months later. Quick recognition and prompt management are essential to avoid devastating consequences. In this paper, we report three uncommon cases of maxillary artery pseudoaneurysm recognised during the surgical management of maxillofacial injuries in Muscat, Oman. All cases presented as sudden brisk bleeding during the intraoperative surgical repair and were subsequently diagnosed and su

Maxillofacial traumas with long-barreled guns may sometimes cause catastrophic results by means of smashing in facial structures. In these patients, reconstruction strategies of both fragmented/lost soft and hard tissues still remain controversial. In their clinic, the authors treated 5 patients with severely injured face after failed suicide attempt between 2008 and 2013. In this study, the authors aimed to present their clinical experiences on these severely injured maxillofacial gunshot traumas and offer a treatment algorithm to gain a result as possible as satisfactory in terms of function
