Anaesthetic and cardiopulmonary effects of intramuscular morphine, medetomidine and ketamine administered to telemetered cats.

The quality and duration of anaesthesia, cardiorespiratory effects and recovery characteristics of a morphine, medetomidine, ketamine (MMK) drug combination were determined in cats. Six healthy, adult female cats were administered 0.2 mg/kg morphine sulphate, 60 microg/kg medetomidine hydrochloride, and 5 mg/kg ketamine hydrochloride intramuscularly. Atipamezole was administered intramuscularly at 120 min after MMK administration. Time to lateral recumbency, intubation, extubation and sternal recumbency were recorded. Cardiorespiratory variables and response to a noxious stimulus were recorded

Effects of atipamezole, an alpha 2-adrenoceptor antagonist, on the anesthesia induced by barbiturates and medetomidine.

We studied the effects of atipamezole, an alpha 2-adrenoceptor antagonist, on hypnosis induced by medetomidine, an alpha 2-adrenoceptor agonist (1 mg/kg IP), and pentobarbital (40 mg/kg IP) by testing the righting reflex in the rat. The duration of antinociception was assessed with repeated pinch tests. Medetomidine-induced hypnosis and antinociception were inhibited by atipamezole at doses greater than 0.1 mg/kg. Atipamezole restored the righting reflex at a dose ratio that was 1:10 or more to that of medetomidine used to induce hypnosis. Subcutaneous atipamezole (1.5 mg/kg) increased the dur

Nicardipine co-administered with medetomidine-midazolam-butorphanol anesthesia attenuates post-anesthetic hypothermia in rats.

Medetomidine-midazolam-butorphanol (MMB) anesthesia is widely used in laboratory rodents but is frequently accompanied by peri- and post-anesthetic hypothermia. This study examined whether co-administration of nicardipine could attenuate hypothermia associated with MMB anesthesia in rats, thereby testing the concept that modulation of peripheral vascular tone can complement thermal management. Rats received MMB alone (0Ni) or MMB combined with nicardipine at 0.25 or 0.5 mg/kg. Body temperature was assessed under warmed and non-warmed conditions, and systolic blood pressure (SBP) and heart rate

Partial antagonization of midazolam-medetomidine-ketamine in cats--atipamezole versus combined atipamezole and flumazenil.

Two different methods, administered both subcutaneously and intravenously, to reverse intramuscular midazolam-medetomidine-ketamine, are evaluated. Eighteen cats were anaesthetized twice each 5 min after premedication with atropine 0.04 mg/kg using midazolam 0.5 mg/kg, medetomidine 0.02 mg/kg and ketamine 2.0 mg/kg intramuscularly in one syringe. Because this study was conducted in co-operation with a dental prophylaxis project, cats had to be immobilized for approximately 1 h. Therefore, anaesthesia was prolonged with propofol to effect, if necessary. After 68+/-11 min on average, immobilizat

High-dose medetomidine increases functional connectivity in the fear-related regions after electrical stimulation.

Anesthesia is essential, but not selective, in resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) for pre-clinical studies. To mitigate stress and minimize head-movement artifacts, animals should be anesthetized during resting-state fMRI. Although the type, dosage, and timing of anesthesia can influence fMRI outcomes, responses to stimulation, and functional connectivity, the appropriate dosage of anesthesia is among the most important considerations. However, little is known about the effects of anesthetic dosage on innate fear responses induced by electrical stimulation. Therefore, w

Capture of isoflurane from anaesthetised dogs and cats following methadone, medetomidine and ketamine administration.

BACKGROUND: Volatile anaesthetic agents contribute to climate change, and reducing this impact is a commendable ambition. We evaluated the efficiency of a veterinary capture device for isoflurane (VET-can/VET-dock, SageTech Veterinary) in anaesthetised cats and dogs. METHODS: Purposeful sampling was used to recruit enough animals undergoing isoflurane general anaesthesia to fill one VET-can to at least 95% capacity. The vaporiser and VET-can were weighed pre- and post-anaesthesia to determine in vivo mass transfer (MT) of isoflurane and water. The primary outcomes were capture efficiency (iso

Continuous intravenous anaesthesia with sufentanil and midazolam in medetomidine premedicated New Zealand White rabbits.

BACKGROUND: Anaesthesia in rabbits is associated with a high mortality rate, compared to that in cats and dogs. Total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA) with drugs that provide cardiovascular stability and are rapidly metabolised could be of benefit for use in rabbits. The aim was to evaluate cardiorespiratory effects of TIVA with sufentanil-midazolam in eight New Zealand White rabbits. Subcutaneous premedication with medetomidine (0.1 mg/kg BW) was followed by IV administration of a mixture of 2.5 μg/mL sufentanil and 0.45 mg/mL midazolam at a rate of 0.3 mL/kg BW/h for anaesthetic induction. Plasma and Urinary Elimination Profiles of Medetomidine Metabolites in Horses for the Purpose of Doping and Medication Control.

Medetomidine, an α₂-adrenergic agonist, is widely used as a sedative in horses. While its pharmacological effects are established, limited data exist on elimination of its metabolites, 3'-hydroxy medetomidine (HMD) and 3'-carboxy medetomidine (CMD), which are of regulatory interest. HMD is currently targeted in plasma and urine under International Screening Limits (ISLs) established by the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA). In this study, seven Thoroughbreds received 6.3 μg/kg of medetomidine intravenously. Blood and urine were collected for 96 h and analyzed by LC-MS/

Responding to medetomidine in Philadelphia: narrative summary of the public health response to a new psychoactive substance.

BACKGROUND: Despite the emergence of medetomidine as the dominant adulterant in Philadelphia's illicit opioid supply, coordinated public health responses are limited or non-existent in the literature. Thus, we summarize a recent Summit in Philadelphia of outpatient and inpatient service providers who specialize in the care of persons who use drugs to discuss medetomidine response readiness and building ongoing community readiness for potential destabilizing drug supply changes. PURPOSE: Describe a public health intervention that distributed information about practices across health care setti
