Antiseizure medication-induced obsessive-compulsive disorder and tic disorder: a pragmatic review.

INTRODUCTION: With a lifetime prevalence of 2.3%, obsessive compulsive disorder is a chronic, disabling condition that is associated with significant social and occupational impairment. Up to 30% of individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder have a lifetime diagnosis of tic disorders. Antiseizure medication is increasingly used for a variety of physical and psychiatric illnesses. Clarification of the relationship between these symptoms/disorders and use of antiseizure medication is critically important for diagnostic and treatment purposes. AREAS COVERED: Studies on antiseizure-induced ob

Medication for opioid use disorder in the Arab World: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a global public health concern. The standard of care for OUD involves treatment using medications such as buprenorphine, methadone, or naltrexone. No known review exists to assess the contextual factors associated with medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) in the Arab World. This systematic review serves as an implementation science study to address this research gap and improve the uptake of MOUD in the Arab World. METHODS: Systematic searches of Medline, PsycINFO, and EMBASE, and a citation analysis, were used to identify peer-reviewed articles w

Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw: A multifaceted diagnostic challenge. Mini review.

RESULTS: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) may present a challenge to the dental clinician due to the many presentations that it can have. This condition can be caused by multiple medications including bisphosphonates, RANKL ligand inhibitors and antiangiogenic drugs. Cases were reported in multiple sites of both the maxilla and mandible, including the hard palate, mylohyoid area, and the buccal plate. The risk factors for this condition include the use of a combination of antiresorptive medications, trauma, periodontal disease, immunosuppression, dental trauma, dental extrac

Misuse of medication in adult substance misuse services: a systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: There is a growing concern about the misuse of over the counter (OTC) and prescription only medication (POM) because of the impact on physical and mental health, drug interactions, overdoses and drug-related deaths. These medicines include opioid analgesics, anxiolytics such as pregabalin and diazepam and antidepressants. This protocol outlines how a systematic review will be undertaken (during June 2021), which aims to examine the literature on the pattern of OTC and POM misuse among adults who are accessing substance misuse treatment services. It will include the types of medic

Mobile methadone medication units: A brief history, scoping review and research opportunity.

BACKGROUND: The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) approved the first mobile medication unit (i.e., a van to administer methadone) in 1988 and approved units on an ad hoc basis until issuing a moratorium in 2007 citing concerns about safety and diversion. In February 2020, the DEA released a notice of proposed rulemaking to permit a resumption of mobile medication units. The Biden Administration plans to release the final rule in 2021. Because a preliminary scan suggested limited evidence, a scoping review examined the research related to methadone vans to identify and assess the extent of

Psychotropic medication use patterns in home-based primary care: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Up to a third of patients seen by home-based primary care (HBPC) providers suffer from mental health problems. These conditions tend to be underrecognized and undertreated for patients receiving HBPC. The purpose of this scoping review is to evaluate current psychotropic use patterns for patients receiving HBPC services. METHODS: The following databases were searched for articles reporting on studies conducted in HBPC settings that identified patterns of psychotropic medication prescription and use: Ovid/MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL, and Psyc

Genetic predisposition for medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws: a systematic review.

The purpose of this study was to assess whether genetic variation is a predictor for the development of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) in patients receiving bisphosphonate therapy for various conditions. A systematic review based on the PRISMA guidelines was performed. A search strategy was developed. Comprehensive searches of major databases were conducted for studies published January 2003 through July 2018. The PICOS strategy was used to develop the inclusion criteria. The analysis in each study was performed primarily using single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) frequen

Pharmacogenomics in medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw: a systematic literature review.

INTRODUCTION: HIV infected patients have a higher risk of developing cancer than the general population. Kaposi's sarcoma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, primary CNS lymphoma and invasive cervical cancers are considered as AIDS defining [1]. An increased incidence in recent years has been reported also for other malignancies after the introduction of cART [2,3]. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective multicentric evaluation of all HIV infected patients with both AIDS and non-AIDS defining neoplasms at six Infectious Disease Units spread throughout Italy since 1991 through 2013. Cases we

Medication adherence among patients with gout: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: In the management of chronic gout, a large proportion of patients need long-term management with urate lowering therapy (ULT). This study reviews medication adherence to ULT and summarizes factors associated with adherence. METHODS: We performed a systematic literature search for studies on adherence to ULT among gout patients in PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and PsycINFO. We conducted meta-analysis, with a random effect model, for the studies reporting the proportion of patients considered adherent to at least 80% of prescribed medication or time taken. We explored potential sources of

Dental implants in patients treated with antiresorptive medication - a systematic literature review.

OBJECTIVE: Bisphosphonate-associated osteonecrosis of the jaws (BP-ONJ) is triggered by inflammatory processes. Typical trigger factors are periodontal disease, denture pressure sores, and surgical interventions such as tooth extractions. Unfortunately there is only little data on how to proceed with implant therapy in patients with bisphosphonate treatment. This topic is not addressed in the German guidelines on medication-associated osteonecrosis. Therefore a systematic literature review was performed. METHODS: The PICO design was used: (Patients) For which subclientel of patients with anti

Medication adherence among pediatric patients with sickle cell disease: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Describe rates of adherence for sickle cell disease (SCD) medications, identify patient and medication characteristics associated with nonadherence, and determine the effect of nonadherence and moderate adherence (defined as taking 60%-80% of doses) on clinical outcomes. METHODS: In February 2012 we systematically searched 6 databases for peer-reviewed articles published after 1940. We identified articles evaluating medication adherence among patients <25 years old with SCD. Two authors reviewed each article to determine whether it should be included. Two authors extracted data, i

Effects of medication on neuroimaging findings in bipolar disorder: an updated review.

OBJECTIVE: Neuroimaging is an important tool for better understanding the neurobiological underpinnings of bipolar disorder (BD). However, potential study participants are often receiving psychotropic medications which can possibly confound imaging data. To better interpret the results of neuroimaging studies in BD, it is important to understand the impact of medications on structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI), functional MRI (fMRI), and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). METHODS: To better understand the impact of medications on imaging data, we conducted a literature review and searche

Nursing administration of medication via enteral tubes in adults: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Enteral tubes are frequently inserted as part of medical treatment in a wide range of patient situations. Patients with an enteral tube are cared for by nurses in a variety of settings, including general and specialised acute care areas, aged care facilities and at home. Regardless of the setting, nurses have the primary responsibility for administering medication through enteral tubes. Medication administration via an enteral tube is a reasonably common nursing intervention that entails a number of skills, including preparing the medication, verifying the tube position, flushing t

Symptomatic treatment of migraine in children: a systematic review of medication trials.

OBJECTIVE: Treatment of pediatric migraine includes an individually tailored regimen of both nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic measures. The mainstay of symptomatic treatment in children with migraine is intermittent oral or suppository analgesics, but there is no coherent body of evidence on symptomatic treatment of childhood migraine available. The objective of this review is to describe and assess the evidence from randomized and clinical controlled trials concerning the efficacy and tolerability of symptomatic treatment of migraine in children. DESIGN: Systematic review according to the

Medication Management Strategies at Hospital Admission: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Hospital admission is high risk for medication harm due to transfer errors, delays, and charting mistakes. Up to 70% of admission medication lists contain errors, 59% potentially harmful, highlighting the need for safety strategies. The aim of the study is to systematically review the effectiveness of strategies for medication management at hospital admission. Following PRISMA guideline, three databases were searched for RCTs. Subgroup analyses assessed outcomes including mortality, readmissions/Emergency Department (ED) visits, length of stay (LOS), medication errors, and adverse drug events

Appropriateness over Numbers: Pharmacological Burden and Scalable Medication Review in Older Adults.

Polypharmacy in older adults is common, rising and inconsistently defined, and it is widely treated as a problem of how many medicines a person takes. This non-systematic narrative review argues that its harm depends more on the appropriateness of the regimen and the pharmacological burden the regimen imposes, with the number of drugs a partly confounded marker rather than the principal cause. Drawing on evidence published mainly since 2020, it traces the shift from counting medicines to weighting them; the prescribing cascade as a patterned and detectable source of inappropriate use; the expl

Understanding initial medication adherence amongst major depressive disorder patients: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Initiation of medication, or the first step in adherence, is a critical determinant of pharmacotherapy success in major depressive disorder (MDD). However, inconsistencies in defining and measuring initiation pose challenges in understanding its impact on patient outcomes. OBJECTIVES: This scoping review aims to systematically assess the definitions, operationalization, and measurement of initial medication adherence (IMA) among patients with MDD. METHODS: A literature search was conducted across PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and PsycInfo from inception to March 2025. Studies were incl
