This review investigates the diagnostic and prognostic significance of telangiectatic meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), as well as potential therapeutic approaches. A thorough scientific literature search was conducted using various databases. Studies focusing on eyelid vascular changes in MGD published between 2010 and 2024 were reviewed. Paper selection was based on their contribution to the understanding of the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of the disease. Ocular surface inflammation, oxidative stress, and cytokine activity are the main molecular pathways involved in the patho

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a leading cause of dry eye disease and one of the most common ophthalmic conditions encountered in eye clinics worldwide. These holocrine glands are situated in the eyelid, where they produce specialized lipids, or meibum, needed to lubricate the eye surface and slow tear film evaporation - functions which are critical to preserving high-resolution vision. MGD results in tear instability, rapid tear evaporation, changes in local microflora, and dry eye disease, amongst other pathological entities. While studies identifying the mechanisms of MGD have general

BACKGROUND: Interest in meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is growing in veterinary medicine. However, research on MGD in dogs is lacking. The aims of this study were to compare the interferometry grades, tear meniscus height (TMH) and non-invasive tear break-up time (NIBUT) grades between dogs with and without MGD.
METHODS: Routine ophthalmic examination, interferometry, NIBUT assessment, TMH measurement and meibography were performed. Age and Schirmer tear test-1 (STT-1) results were compared between the control and MGD groups using Student's t-test. Interferometry grades, NIBUT grades and T

INTRODUCTION: Blepharitis and meibomian gland dysfunction are chronic inflammatory conditions with overlapping pathophysiology and symptomatology. Both microbial infection and seborrhea contribute to the pathophysiology and both may benefit from treatment with tea tree oil (TTO). We evaluated the therapeutic effect of eyelids scrubbing with TTO in a group of patients with lid margin disease.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty patients were recruited. Half of them received lid scrubbing with a TTO formula (Naviblef™) and the other half was treated by massage and cleansing. The effect on ocular surfa

Meibomian gland (MG) dysfunction (MGD) is a multifactorial, chronic condition of the eyelids, leading to eye irritation, inflammation and ocular surface disease. Initial conservative therapy often includes a combination of warm compresses in addition to baby shampoo or eyelid wipes. The practice of lid hygiene dates back to the 1950s, when selenium sulfide-based shampoo was first used to treat seborrhoeic dermatitis of the eyelids. Today, tear-free baby shampoo has replaced dandruff shampoo for MGD treatment and offers symptom relief in selected patients. However, many will not achieve signifi

Sjögren disease (SjD) is an autoimmune disease driven by autoimmune CD4+T cells that leads to an immune-mediated loss of lacrimal glands (LG). Meibomian glands are lipid-producing glands in the eyelids that help prevent tear evaporation. While the role of T cells in LG-mediated destruction is well established, it is unknown whether pathogenic T cells can cause MG dysfunction (MGD). Herein, we investigated whether autoimmune CD4+T cells induce MGD and characterized the pathophysiologic mechanisms using an adoptive transfer model. T cells were isolated from CD25KO (KOCD4) or wild-type (WTCD4) mi

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) has traditionally been explained by the ductal-centric hypothesis, which attributes disease progression to ductal obstruction and secondary acinar atrophy. However, this model does not fully account for all clinical and pathological features. Recognizing these limitations, the meibocyte-centric hypothesis has emerged, proposing that intrinsic meibocyte dysfunction and acinar degeneration may play a primary role. In this context, this narrative review incorporates selected original data from animal models to contrast the ductal-centric and meibocyte-centric hyp

Contact lens (CL) wearers often suffer from ocular discomfort, which leads to cessation of CL wear. About 30% to 50% of CL wearers complain of dry eye (DE) symptoms. Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is considered the most common cause of evaporative DE. Numerous studies have investigated whether CL wear might affect the meibomian glands. This manuscript reviews studies examining the relationship between CL use and MGD. A PubMed database search was conducted for studies published between 1980-2021 with one or a combination of search terms related to "meibomian gland", "meibomian gland dysfunct
