Spontaneous remission in patients with essential blepharospasm and Meige syndrome.

PURPOSE: To determine the frequency of remission in patients with essential blepharospasm and Meige syndrome. METHOD: Retrospective analysis of patients by means of questionnaire in an institutional setting. RESULTS: Among 238 patients diagnosed in a single institution as having essential blepharospasm or Meige syndrome, 27 (11.3%) claimed to be symptom free without curative surgery. The average time between onset and resolution in the patients who claimed remission was 4.85 years (range, 3 months to 22 years). Among these patients, the duration of remission averaged 6.33 years (range, 1 yea

Meige's syndrome during long-term neuroleptic treatment.

Two patients developed difficulties in eyelid opening following long-term neuroleptic treatment of more than 6-8 years. Tardive dyskinesia and dystonia apart from the face were not found in either case. The symptoms fluctuated in their severities on a daily basis and were easily aggravated by various stimuli, e.g., stress, walking, reading and watching television. Electromyographic studies of their faces clearly indicated that the symptoms resulted from spontaneous blepharospasm and were analogous to idiopathic Meige's syndrome. Therefore, the patients' difficulties in opening their eyes were

Meige's syndrome: acute and chronic responses to clonazepan and anticholinergics.

Relief of blepharospasm was achieved with clonazepan (CNZ, 1 mg i.v.) and benzhexol (BH, 5 mg i.m.) by acute parenteral administration in 5 cases of Meige's syndrome. Improvement was greater with CNZ, mean value on a quantitative scale 100%, than for BH (84.1%). Both drugs were less effective on the associated oromandibular dystonia (OMD) observed in 3 of the cases, relief again being greater when using CNZ (87.3%) compared to BH (58.3%). Intravenous administration of CNZ predicted the response to prolonged oral medication (6 mg/day) in 3 of the cases. Though both blepharospasm and OMD are tho

Meige syndrome: relief on high-dose anticholinergic therapy.

A patient with Meige syndrome associated with spasmodic torticollis was treated with benztropine mesylate (Cogentin) at doses of 12-16 mg daily. Marked suppression of both oromandibular dystonia and the torticollis was obtained. Mild impairment of recent memory was the major side effect. Peripheral anticholinergic side effects were controlled by the concomitant administration of ambenonium chloride (Mytelase) 15 mg daily.

Atypical Psuedo-Demons-Meigs Syndrome Presenting As Acute Dyspnoea With Pseudomembranous Colitis.

Demons-Meigs syndrome is a rare clinical presentation of benign ovarian mass with hydrothorax and ascites. As ascites can be present in any ovarian mass, hydrothorax is a salient feature of the syndrome. The syndrome is subtyped as atypical in the absence of ascites from the triad. Nevertheless, it is labeled as pseudo-Demons-Meigs syndrome if the ovarian tumor is neoplastic rather than benign. The management of Demons-Meigs syndrome is complex and could be misleading due to pleural effusion and ascites, so an understanding of the syndrome is important. This case report is unique as it has two

Recurrent pleural effusion from ovarian hemangioma: A rare pseudo-Meigs syndrome presentation.

Pleural effusion is a common condition related to various diseases such as heart failure, malignancies, and pneumonia. Ovarian hemangioma is a rare type of female genital tumour and can rarely cause pleural effusion. In this case, we present a 48-year-old female with repeated episodes of recurrent right-sided pleural effusion over 1 year with no clear aetiology. Abdominal computed tomography revealed a large left ovarian mass. After surgical removal of the mass, the repeated pleural effusion episodes ceased, and histopathology analysis reported a rare ovarian hemangioma. Pseudo Meigs' syndrome

Sclerosing Stromal Tumor of the Ovary Presenting as Meigs Syndrome During Childhood.

Meigs syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by a triad of benign ovarian tumor, ascites, and pleural effusion. Despite its benign nature, its presentation can be similar to metastatic malignancy, making preoperative diagnosis often challenging. The differential diagnosis includes serious and even life-threatening conditions. Meigs syndrome is most common in postmenopausal women and is extremely rare in children. It is often undiagnosed until an invasive surgery is performed. The fact that surgery includes a unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy in females of reproductive age raises concerns for

Incomplete pseudo-Meigs' syndrome caused by endometrial ovarian cyst: A case report.

A 63-year-old female was admitted to our hospital with history of persistent dyspnea. Right pleural effusion and ovarian tumor were discovered, but here were no significant findings on thoracoscopy under local anesthesia. The pleural effusion was suspected to be secondary to Meigs' syndrome, and a diagnosis of endometriotic ovarian cyst was made. Since the pleural effusion resolved after surgery, the patient was diagnosed with incomplete pseudo-Meigs' syndrome. We consider this to be a valuable case, as there are no previously reported cases of pseudo-Meigs' syndrome derived from an endometrio

Meigs' syndrome mimicking heart failure with preserved ejection fraction: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Meigs' syndrome is a rare disease characterized by a triad of presentations, including benign ovarian tumor, ascites, and pleural effusion. However, a clinical diagnosis of Meigs' syndrome remains challenging because pleural and ascitic effusions can be common findings in a variety of underlying conditions. Furthermore, these findings can often be misdiagnosed as pleural and peritoneal dissemination caused by potentially malignant tumors, leading to the administration of improper treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: We described a case of an 85-year-old postmenopausal female patient with

Meigs syndrome presenting with axillary vein thrombosis and lymphadenopathy: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Meigs syndrome is a rare condition, occurring in less than 1% of ovarian tumors and has the characteristic features of a benign ovarian tumor, ascites and a pleural effusion. We present a case of Meigs syndrome in a young patient presenting initially with an axillary vein thrombosis and local lymphadenopathy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year-old Caucasian woman presented with a short history of right arm swelling and shortness of breath as a result of an axillary vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolus. The initial assessment also demonstrated right axillary and subclavian lymphadenopa

Pseudo-Meigs syndrome caused by sigmoid colon cancer metastasis to the ovary.

We present a patient with pseudo-Meigs syndrome (PMS) secondary to sigmoid colon cancer metastasis to the ovary with elevated serum levels of carcinoembryonic antigen, CA19-9, and CA-125 who showed a marked change in pleural effusion before and after surgery. We have to consider PMS associated with colon cancer in patients with pleural effusion/ascites and ovarian tumors.

Meigs syndrome was misdiagnosed as a malignant ovarian tumor: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Meigs syndrome is characterized by the association of a benign ovarian tumor, typically an ovarian fibroma, with pleural effusion and ascites. CASE SUMMARY: This report presents a case of a 54-year-old woman who was misdiagnosed with malignant ovarian neoplasm due to the presence of significant abdominal distension and elevated CA125 levels. Initial imaging at multiple external facilities suggested a left-sided malignant ovarian tumor, leading to unnecessary delays in treatment. Upon admission to our institution in April 2024, imaging confirmed a large pelvic mass, and subsequent

Demons-Meigs syndrome caused by a giant ovarian fibroma: A case report.

Demons-Meigs syndrome is a very rare entity. It combines a benign ovarian "fibroma-like" tumor with ascites and hydrothorax. The notion of benignancy is the key point. CA-125 levels are most of the time normal, but high levels can be observed in rare cases which makes it difficult to have a diagnostic. We present here the case of a 43-year-old female patient who presented with abdominopelvic pain. Imaging discovered a 30 cm large intraabdominal mass with ascites and bilateral pleural effusion. Surgical resection of the tumor was performed, and pathology identified an ovarian fibroma. No postin

Pseudo-Meigs syndrome due to bilateral serous ovarian adenocarcinoma: A case report.

Pseudo-Meigs syndrome is a rare entity where pleural effusion and ascites disappear after resection of a benign or malignant pelvic tumour. We report a 48-year-old woman presented with shortness of breath and abdominal distention. She had a right-sided massive pleural effusion and ascites. Pleural and ascitic fluid analysis revealed exudative effusion in the absence of pyogenic foci, tuberculosis or malignant cells. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the abdomen showed bilateral ovarian malignancy with peritoneal deposits and ascites which was later confirmed as serous adenocarcinoma. Su

[Demons-Meigs syndrome or cardiomyopathy: a difficult case of a differential diagnosis].

The article presents an overview of the data related to Demons-Meigs syndrome and the clinical situation associated with a complex differential diagnosis between myocarditis with the formation of secondary cardiomyopathy and Demons-Meigs syndrome. A variety of clinical symptom complexes that are associated with Demons-Meigs syndrome is discussed. The concepts of classical and non-classical, full and incomplete Demons-Meigs syndrome are considered. The current views on the pathogenesis of the syndrome and the mechanism of the formation of ascites and pleural effusion are given.

Pseudo-Meigs' syndrome secondary to metachronous ovarian metastases from transverse colon cancer.

Pseudo-Meigs' syndrome associated with colorectal cancer is extremely rare. We report here a case of pseudo-Meigs' syndrome secondary to metachronous ovarian metastases from colon cancer. A 65-year-old female with a history of surgery for transverse colon cancer and peritoneal dissemination suffered from metachronous ovarian metastases during treatment with systemic chemotherapy. At first, neither ascites nor pleural effusion was observed, but she later complained of progressive abdominal distention and dyspnea caused by rapidly increasing ascites and pleural effusion and rapidly enlarging ova

Pseudo-Meigs' syndrome associated with hydropic degenerating uterine leiomyoma: a case report.

Pseudo-Meigs' syndrome secondary to uterine leiomyoma is a rare entity. A 50-year-old Japanese woman presented with a 3-month history of shortness of breath. Chest X-ray and magnetic resonance imaging revealed massive right pleural effusion, ascites and a large subserosal uterine myoma. She underwent a total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. The pathology was consistent with a benign leiomyoma. The ascites and pleural effusion rapidly disappeared postoperatively. The serum interleukin-6 level was 3.9 pg/mL before surgery and declined to 1.6 pg/mL postoperatively. Pre
