Direct human brain recordings have confirmed the presence of high-frequency oscillatory events, termed ripples, during awake behavior. While many prior studies have focused on medial temporal lobe (MTL) ripples during memory retrieval, here we investigate ripples during memory encoding. Specifically, we ask whether ripples during encoding predict whether and how memories are subsequently recalled. Detecting ripples from MTL electrodes implanted in 116 neurosurgical participants (n = 61 male) performing a verbal episodic memory task, we find that encoding ripples do not distinguish recalled fro

A sample of adult women with major depression who reported childhood sexual or physical abuse completed a measure of the extent to which they were experiencing intrusive memories of the abuse and their efforts to avoid these memories. The majority of women in the sample reported high levels of disturbing intrusive memories, and high levels of avoidance. Those abused women with particularly high levels of intrusions and more avoidance were also more severely depressed than both non-abused women and abused women with low levels of intrusions and avoidance. Higher levels of intrusions and avoidan

A cornerstone of memory science is the finding that the medial temporal lobe plays a critical role in supporting episodic long-term memory. However, the role that this brain region plays in supporting other forms of memory such as working memory is controversial. In this selective review, we describe some of the key studies that have informed our current understanding of the role that the medial temporal lobe plays in working memory. We first describe the early studies that supported the idea that the medial temporal lobe is selectively important for long-term episodic memory function, then di

BACKGROUND: Cognitive reserve (CR) is hypothesized to partially explain the discrepancy between Alzheimer's disease related brain pathology and cognitive performance. Educational attainment is often used as a proxy for CR.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of years of education and the relationship between atrophy in the medial temporal lobe and episodic memory, in a cross-sectional ecological multi-center memory clinic cohort.
METHODS: Included patients (n = 702) had undergone memory clinic examination and were diagnosed with subjective cognitive impairment (n = 99), mild cognitive impa

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Two functional networks are proposed as neuronal support for the complex processes of memory: the anterior temporal and the medial posterior systems. We examined the atrophy of hippocampus (HC) and of those areas constituting the two functional memory systems in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients with low disability.
METHODS: Episodic memory (EM) was assessed in 88 relapsing MS patients and in 40 healthy controls using Wechsler Memory Scale III (Spanish adaptation). FreeSurfer software was used to calculate normalized volume of total cortex, grey matter, white matter, subc

Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) has been reported to improve episodic memory (EM) by entraining neural oscillations. However, the effects of tACS delivered over the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) immediately after learning remain unclear. We aimed to determine whether tACS over the PPC, administered immediately after learning, enhances EM retention. Thirty-six healthy adults were randomly assigned to the tACS or sham-control groups. On day 1, participants completed three sessions consisting of a word-learning task followed by a recognition test. Subsequently, 40 Hz tACS (1

Midlife in females typically involves a significant neuroendocrine transition that may have effects on brain connectivity that are relevant to both normal and pathological aging. One potential contributing factor to the individual differences in cognition and risk for pathological aging is the brain's response to decreased levels of estradiol. We assessed the relationship between estradiol level and task-modulated effective connectivity between brain regions during an episodic memory task in females during midlife. We utilized data from the Human Connectome Project - Aging 2.0 release. One hun

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) are impaired at incremental reward-based learning. It is typically assumed that this impairment reflects a loss of striatal dopamine. However, many open questions remain about the nature of reward-based learning deficits in PD. Recent studies have found that even simple reward-based learning tasks rely on a combination of cognitive and computational strategies, including one-shot episodic memory. These findings raise questions about how incremental learning and episodic memory contribute to decision-making in PD. We tested healthy participants (n = 26; 14

Aging is associated with marked declines in episodic memory corresponding with decreased volume in studies of morphology and reduced network response in studies of functional connectomics. Furthermore, recent research has demonstrated that reductions in resting state network connectivity are related to declines in episodic memory, specifically in the default mode and frontoparietal cortical networks. Additionally, the interactive effects of aging and traumatic brain injury (TBI) are associated with increased risk for neurodegeneration and episodic memory impairments. However, there is a gap in

Childhood maltreatment is recognized as a risk factor for cognitive decline in adulthood. However, the mechanisms underlying this association, particularly the role of systemic inflammation, remain understudied. To address this gap, this study investigated the indirect effects of inflammation on the associations between childhood maltreatment and both episodic memory (EM) and executive functioning (EF) performance 10 years after inflammatory measurement in older adults. We selected 590 participants (Mage = 65.5 years) from the Midlife in the United States Study based on available childhood mal

Declarative memory encompasses episodic and semantic divisions. Episodic memory captures singular events with specific spatiotemporal relationships, whereas semantic memory houses context-independent knowledge. Behavioural and functional neuroimaging studies have revealed common and distinct neural substrates of both memory systems, implicating mesiotemporal lobe (MTL) regions such as the hippocampus and distributed neocortices. Here, we explored declarative memory system reorganization in patients with unilateral temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) as a human disease model to test the impact of vari

BACKGROUND: Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is the most common atypical parkinsonism and has executive dysfunction as a core feature. The magnitude of episodic memory disturbance in PSP is yet to be clarified.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate how impaired is episodic memory in PSP compared to healthy controls and other neuropsychiatric disorders. Also, we sought to identify the brain correlates underlying these memory disturbances.
METHODS: We performed a systematic search on PubMed and Scopus, combining the terms "progressive supranuclear palsy" AND "memory". The search was limited to papers

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) targeted to the hippocampal network via the inferior parietal cortex (HN-Stim) can strengthen hippocampal-cortical connectivity and improve episodic memory, offering a potential clinical intervention. However, acceptance of this technique has been tempered by the infrequent reproduction of findings in rTMS research on cognitive processes. We tested the reproducibility of the HN-Stim effect on episodic memory in our laboratory using different procedures from those previously published. We tested episodic memory in 29 participants before, one d

We studied the association between episodic memory and cortical fibrillar β-amyloid pathology within twin pairs. Using telephone-administered cognitive screening of 1415 twin pairs in a population-based older Finnish Twin Cohort study, we identified 45 (mean [SD] age 72.9 [4.0] years, 40% women) cognitively discordant same-sex twin pairs (24 dizygotic and 21 monozygotic) without neurological or psychiatric disorders other than AD or mild cognitive impairment. In-person neuropsychological testing was conducted. Cortical amyloid was measured with carbon 11-labelled Pittsburgh compound B ([11C]Pi

Episodic memory deficit is a symptom frequently observed after a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). However, few studies have investigated the impact of a single and acute mTBI on episodic memory and structural cerebral changes. To do so, we conducted two experiments. In the first, we evaluated verbal episodic memory by using a word recall test, in 52 patients with mTBI (mean age 33.1 [12.2] years) 2-4 weeks after a first mTBI, compared with 54 healthy controls (31.3 [9.2] years) and followed both groups up for 6 months. In the second, we measured hippocampal volume in a subset of 40 particip

The Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test (FCSRT) is a largely validated neuropsychological test for the identification of amnestic syndrome from the early stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Previous electrophysiological data suggested a slowing down of the alpha rhythm in the AD-continuum as well as a key role of this rhythmic brain activity for episodic memory processes. This study therefore investigates the link between alpha brain activity and alterations in episodic memory as assessed by the FCSRT. For that purpose, 37 patients with altered FCSRT performance underwent a comprehensive neu

Memory for personally-relevant past events (episodic memory) is critical for activities of daily living. Decline in this type of declarative long-term memory is a common characteristic of healthy ageing, a process accelerated in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) has been used as a strategy to ameliorate episodic memory. Here, we critically review studies investigating whether tES may improve episodic memory in physiological and pathological ageing. Most of the studies suggest that tES over the prefrontal or tem

A growing body of research has examined the relationship between episodic memory decline, the cognitive hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and the presence of Apolipoprotein E ε4 (APOE ε4) allele, a major genetic risk factor for the disease. Our review attempts to summarize and critically evaluate this literature. We performed a systematic search for studies assessing episodic memory in AD patients who were genotyped for APOE ε4 and identified fourteen papers. Although most of these papers reported significant relationships between APOE ε4 and episodic memory decline in AD, some papers did

Previous studies have demonstrated reductions in episodic memory during nicotine withdrawal. However, these studies have been unable to dissociate memory reductions from losses in attention associated with tobacco abstinence. In the present study, the authors sought to determine whether episodic memory reduction is a primary effect of nicotine withdrawal during tobacco abstinence. Heavy smokers were tested when smoking normally and following 24 hrs of abstinence. Participants were tested with a recognition memory task in which items were studied under full and divided attention conditions. For

Memory in songbirds, from song learning, production, and recognition to that for locations in complex environments, has led to the attractiveness of these animals as model systems for the changes occurring within and between neurons that lead to relevant modifications in behavior. Zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) in particular are excellent models attributable to their ability to readily perform the above-mentioned, ecologically relevant memories in the laboratories, and the ease with which these stereotyped behaviors can be manipulated and measured. This review centers on the independent f
