Contribution of articulatory rehearsal to short-term memory: evidence from a case of selective disruption.

We describe a brain-damaged patient with disturbed articulatory rehearsal in whom all predictions derived from a working memory model were fulfilled. The patient showed a reduced verbal span, no word-length effect on immediate recall in both the visual or the auditory modalities, no phonological similarity effect in the visual modality, and no effect of articulatory suppression. A slowed overt articulation rate provided independent evidence for disrupted articulatory rehearsal. The other components of working memory, the visuospatial scratch-pad, phonological storage system, and central execut

Early emotional memories and bonding as predictors of short-term and long-term outcome in adults with generalized anxiety disorder.

The impact of childhood experiences on the development of psychopathology is well established in the literature. Few studies, however, have assessed parental bonding during childhood as a predictor of response to anxiety disorders treatment. The aim of the study was to examine whether emotional memories of childhood parenting could predict short-term and long-term outcome in three different interventions for patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD): mindfulness-based intervention (Body in Mind Training [BMT]), fluoxetine (FLX), and an active control group (quality of life [QoL]). Androgens and estrogens rapidly facilitate short-term memory in the dorsal hippocampus of male mice.

Sex steroid hormones influence cognition through both classical delayed genomic and rapid mechanisms. While rapid estrogenic modulation of memory in the dorsal hippocampus (dHPC) is well established in females, the extent to which the sex hormones rapidly regulate short-term memory (STM) in males remains unresolved. Here, we investigated the rapid effects of the testosterone metabolites 17β-estradiol (E2) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) on hippocampal-mediated STM in castrated CD1 male mice. Bilateral infusions into the dHPC were administered prior to testing object placement, object recognition

Investigating the impact of migraine on short-term and working memory: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis on past research to ascertain the impact that experiencing migraines has on memory. Specifically, this research explores the short-term and working memory domains and where possible delineates between verbal and visual memory. BACKGROUND: Migraine is a prevalent neurological disorder that affects up to 15% of the global population. Migraine is comprised of physical symptoms including head pain, nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. There are also various subtypes that are based on specific symptom manifestations such

Vividness of visual imagery questionnaire scores and their relationship to visual short-term memory performance.

Mechanisms underlying visual imagery, the ability to create vivid mental representations of a scene in the absence of sensory input, remain to be fully understood. Some previous studies have proposed that visual imagery might be related to visual short-term memory (STM), with a common mechanism involving retention of visual information over short periods of time. Other observations have shown a strong relationship between visual imagery and functional activity in the hippocampus and primary visual cortex, both regions also associated with visual STM. Here we examined the relationship of visual

An investigation of verbal short-term memory and phonological processing in four children with Williams syndrome.

Abstract Although phonological processing is generally considered to be a proficiency in Williams syndrome (WS), there are very few studies which have extensively explored phonological processing abilities in WS. In this study, we re-assessed phonological processing in WS by exploring verbal STM and phonological awareness abilities in 4 children with WS (CA: 10-12 years) and two control groups, one matched for chronological age (CA) and the other matched for verbal mental age (VA). Our results confirm and extend previous claims of preserved phonological STM in WS by showing specifically preser

Even an activated long-term memory system still needs a separate short-term store: A reply to Cowan (2019).

In Norris (2017), I explained why the notion of activated LTM (long-term memory) combined with a focus of attention was unable to perform the computations required to support short-term memory (STM) and argued that those extra computations must require a separate STM system. Cowan (2019) made the alternative proposal that this full set of computations is better conceptualized as a unitary system of activated LTM. To this he added a pointer system, the ability to perform variable binding, and an unspecified model of STM that acts as a front end to LTM. This appears to be simply an exercise in r

Modulating Phonological Short-Term Memory in Stroke Survivors With Aphasia Using Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation.

BackgroundShort-term maintenance of phonological information is critical for language production and comprehension, and is often impaired in stroke survivors with aphasia.ObjectiveIn this pilot study, we investigated whether brain oscillatory activity underlying phonological short-term memory (pSTM) can be influenced by transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) in stroke survivors with aphasia (SWA).MethodsIn a within-subject, single-blinded, sham-controlled study, 13 SWA received theta-tACS (4-7 Hz) targeting left temporoparietal and inferior frontal regions across 3 tACS conditions

Prediction of CO2 concentration in mushroom greenhouse via optimized long and short term memory algorithm.

To increase the accuracy as well as effectiveness of predicting the level of CO2 in mushroom cultivating greenhouses, two optimized prediction models of long and short term memory neural networks (VMD-SSA-LSTM and VMD-DBO-LSTM) are proposed. To start with, time series data on greenhouse CO2 concentrations were decomposed to get intrinsic mode function (IMF) at various time scales. The sparrow search algorithm (SSA) or dung beetle optimization Algorithm (DBO) is then used to optimize the amount of hidden layer neurons, discover the best learning rate, find the optimal iteration times, and impro

Traffic-related air pollution backcasting using convolutional neural network and long short-term memory approach.

Air pollution backcasting, especially nitrogen dioxide (NO2), is crucial in epidemiological studies, thus enabling the reconstruction of historical exposure levels for assessing long-term health effects. Changes in NO2 concentrations in urban areas are typically influenced by vehicle composition, technology, and traffic volumes. However, the observed NO2 levels at a monitoring site also reflect contributions from other sources, such as industrial and regional backgrounds. This study proposes a model that captures the spatial variability of NO2 concentrations, incorporating temporal trends thro

Slight and hidden hearing loss differentially affect short- and long-term memory in young rats.

Mild forms of hearing loss (HL) have been linked to cognitive impairments in children, yet the neurobiological mechanisms underlying this connection remain unclear. Existing research using animal models mostly focuses on more severe levels of HL or investigates only limited aspects of cognition. To gain a broader understanding of how slight/hidden HL affects cognitive behaviors, we induced HL in 4-week-old Wistar rats through noise exposure. Auditory brainstem response measurements confirmed slight and hidden HL, but this auditory impairment did not alter the density of inner hair cells or the

Time series forecasting of weight for diuretic dose adjustment using bidirectional long short-term memory.

Loop diuretics are prevailing drugs to manage fluid overload in heart failure. However, adjusting to loop diuretic doses is strenuous due to the lack of a diuretic guideline. Accordingly, we developed a novel clinician decision support system for adjusting loop diuretics dosage with a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) algorithm using time-series EMRs. Weight measurements were used as the target to estimate fluid loss during diuretic therapy. We designed the TSFD-LSTM, a bi-directional LSTM model with an attention mechanism, to forecast weight change 48 h after heart failure patients were injected

Non-Contact Heartbeat Detection Based on Ballistocardiogram Using UNet and Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory.

Benefiting from non-invasive sensing tech- nologies, heartbeat detection from ballistocardiogram (BCG) signals is of great significance for home-care applications, such as risk prediction of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and sleep staging, etc. In this paper, we propose an effective deep learning model for automatic heartbeat detection from BCG signals based on UNet and bidirectional long short-term memory (Bi-LSTM). The developed deep learning model provides an effective solution to the existing challenges in BCG-aided heartbeat detection, especially for BCG in low signal-to-noise ratio, in wh

Orienting Attention to Short-Term Memory Representations via Sensory Modality and Semantic Category Retro-Cues.

There is growing interest in characterizing the neural mechanisms underlying the interactions between attention and memory. Current theories posit that reflective attention to memory representations generally involves a fronto-parietal attentional control network. The present study aimed to test this idea by manipulating how a particular short-term memory (STM) representation is accessed, that is, based on its input sensory modality or semantic category, during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Human participants performed a novel variant of the retro-cue paradigm, in which they we

Locating Temporal Functional Dynamics of Visual Short-Term Memory Binding using Graph Modular Dirichlet Energy.

Visual short-term memory binding tasks are a promising early marker for Alzheimer's disease (AD). To uncover functional deficits of AD in these tasks it is meaningful to first study unimpaired brain function. Electroencephalogram recordings were obtained from encoding and maintenance periods of tasks performed by healthy young volunteers. We probe the task's transient physiological underpinnings by contrasting shape only (Shape) and shape-colour binding (Bind) conditions, displayed in the left and right sides of the screen, separately. Particularly, we introduce and implement a novel technique

Short-Term Memory Depends on Dissociable Medial Temporal Lobe Regions in Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment.

Short-term memory (STM) has generally been thought to be independent of the medial temporal lobe (MTL) in contrast to long-term memory (LTM). Prodromal Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a condition in which the MTL is a major early focus of pathology and LTM is thought disproportionately affected relative to STM. However, recent studies have suggested a role for the MTL in STM, particularly hippocampus, when binding of different elements is required. Other work has suggested involvement of extrahippocampal MTL structures, particularly in STM tasks that involve item-level memory. We examined STM for

Variation in Parasympathetic Dysregulation Moderates Short-term Memory Problems in Childhood Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

Although attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with impairment in working memory and short-term memory, up to half of individual children with ADHD perform within a normative range. Heterogeneity in other ADHD-related mechanisms, which may compensate for or combine with cognitive weaknesses, is a likely explanation. One candidate is the robustness of parasympathetic regulation (as indexed by respiratory sinus arrhythmia; RSA). Theory and data suggest that a common neural network is likely tied to both heart-rate regulation and certain cognitive functions (including aspe

Specific deficit of colour-colour short-term memory binding in sporadic and familial Alzheimer's disease.

Short-term memory binding of visual features which are processed across different dimensions (shape-colour) is impaired in sporadic Alzheimer's disease, familial Alzheimer's disease, and in asymptomatic carriers of familial Alzheimer's disease. This study investigated whether Alzheimer's disease also impacts on within-dimension binding processes. The study specifically explored whether visual short-term memory binding of features of the same type (colour-colour) is sensitive to Alzheimer's disease. We used a neuropsychological battery and a short-term memory binding task to assess patients wit
