OBJECTIVE: Depression is common in Tourette syndrome and Chronic Tic Disorders (TS/CTD) and contributes to significant impairment. The specificity of autobiographical memories is implicated in an individual's sense of self and their daily functioning but also in the onset and development of depression in the general population. Here, we examined whether memory specificity is reduced in young people with TS/CTD, relative to control participants, and whether memory specificity is associated with depression.
METHOD: Thirty young people with TS/CTD (14 females; age: x̅ = 11.31; SD = 1.66; 87% Whi

Meta-analyses and reviews on cognitive disorders in schizophrenia have shown that the most robust and common cognitive deficits are found in episodic memory and executive functions. More complex memory domains, such as autobiographical memory (AM), are also impaired in schizophrenia, but such impairments are reported less often despite their negative impact on patients' outcome. In contrast to episodic memory, assessed in laboratory tasks, memories of past personal events are much more complex and directly relate to the self. The meta-analysis included 20 studies, 571 patients with schizophren

A complex relation exists between memory and executive functioning (EF), particularly when learning and recalling multifaceted or extensive information ( Moscovitch & Winocur, 2002 ). A common instrument for evaluating this relationship is the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure (ROCF; Rey, 1941 ; Osterrieth, 1944 ). The ROCF has proved particularly useful in pediatric research; however, little research has been conducted among children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). Seventy children (35 FASD, 35 control), aged 6 to 12 years, were tested using the ROCF. All participants with FASD had

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in its chronic form has been associated with a number of neurocognitive impairments involving emotionally neutral stimuli. It remains unknown whether such impairments also characterize acute PTSD. In the present investigation, neurocognitive functions were examined in trauma exposed individuals with (n=21) and without (n=16) acute PTSD, as well as in a group of individuals never exposed to trauma (n=17) using specific and standardized tasks such as the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test, the Aggie's Figure Learning Test, the Autobiographical Memory Interview

OBJECTIVES: Nonorganic, functional memory disorder (FMD) is frequent in memory clinic patients, and is an important differential diagnosis to prodromal dementia. The authors propose a definition of FMD as an acquired medical and psychological condition that is closely related to psychosocial burden and distress.
DESIGN: Prospective follow-up study, aimed to evaluate the natural course of FMD.
SETTING: University hospital memory clinic.
PARTICIPANTS: Seventy-three patients who suffered memory deficits and psychological distress and had normal test results. Forty-six attended a follow-up exam

The goal of this report is to critically review research on executive functioning (EF) and working memory in individuals with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). Individuals with FASD exhibit EF deficits in the areas of cognitive flexibility, planning and strategy use, verbal reasoning, some aspects of inhibition, set shifting, fluency, working memory, and, recently, on tests of emotion-related or hot EF. Some researchers have linked prenatal alcohol exposure to abnormalities in the development of the frontal cortex of affected individuals or animals. One common finding is that these EF de

The authors retrospectively studied histopathologic findings and diagnoses of muscle specimens taken from 188 pediatric patients presenting with clinical neuromuscular disorders in King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital between August 1991 and December 2003. Eighty patients (67.8%) established the definite diagnosis by histopathological findings of muscle specimens. About 18.6, 17.7, 7.6, 5.9, 5.0, 3.4, 2.5 and 1.7 percent of the total number of patients were diagnosed as Duchenne muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy, congenital myopathies, mitochondrial disease, inflammatory myopathies,

Two experiments investigated memory bias for panic-related material in 40 patients with panic disorder and 40 healthy control subjects. No memory bias was found on a memory task that tested intentional encoding and explicit recall of panic-related versus non-panic-related sentences. In contrast, a significant memory bias was apparent on a memory task requiring classification of panic-related and non-panic-related words to test conceptual information processing in implicit memory. Panic patients learned panic-related material better than controls.

This report documents a case of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following psychological trauma with cerebral insult and amnesia for the traumatic event. The case history demonstrates the role of implicit memory in PTSD and indicates that the mechanisms of psychopathology are one-trial sensitization and conditioned emotional responses.

Neurodevelopmental disorders do not have biological markers that allow for their identification. This means that in most cases, diagnosis is based on behavior. This approach implies that difficulties will exist in establishing the diagnostic boundaries of the different nosological entities, and it argues that neurodevelopmental disorders probably share neuropsychological deficits. Our main objective was to study whether neurodevelopmental disorders share a common endophenotype. We carried out a study of memory in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), Developmental Language Disorders (

Pathological doubt in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) suggests core deficits in memory and metamemory, but the nature of these deficits and their response to treatment remain unclear. This study aimed to address this gap by investigating (a) whether memory and metamemory problems in OCD are due to retrieval or encoding processes, and (b) the effect of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) on these functions. Sixty OCD patients and 60 matched healthy controls completed 3 episodic memory tasks involving different stimuli, with assessments of judgment-of-learning and feeling-of-knowing. OCD pati

INTRODUCTION: Memory impairment is a critical challenge in neurodegenerative disorders, particularly in Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and age-related cognitive decline. This research explores the molecular mechanisms by which curcumin, a polyphenolic compound derived from Curcuma longa, exerts neuroprotective effects that may ameliorate cognitive deficits associated with these conditions.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Evidence from both preclinical studies and emerging clinical trials indicates that curcumin enhances neuronal signaling and synaptic plasticity, primarily through the modu

Several psychiatric conditions such as phobias, generalized anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are characterized by pathological fear and anxiety. The main therapeutic approach used in the management of these disorders is exposure-based therapy, which is conceptually based upon fear extinction with the formation of a new safe memory association, allowing the reduction in behavioral conditioned fear responses. Nevertheless, this approach is only partially resolutive, since many patients have difficulty following the demanding and long process, and relapses are frequently observe

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a neurodegenerative disease associated with exposure to repetitive head impacts, such as those from contact sports. The pathognomonic lesion for CTE is the perivascular accumulation of hyper-phosphorylated tau in neurons and other cell process at the depths of sulci. CTE cannot be diagnosed during life at this time, limiting research on risk factors, mechanisms, epidemiology, and treatment. There is an urgent need for in vivo biomarkers that can accurately detect CTE and differentiate it from other neurological disorders. Neuroimaging is an integral co

One of the hallmarks of anxiety disorders is impaired cognitive control, affecting working memory (WM). The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) is critical for WM; however, it is still unclear how dlPFC activity relates to WM impairments in patients. Forty-one healthy volunteers and 32 anxiety (general and/or social anxiety disorder) patients completed the Sternberg WM paradigm during safety and unpredictable shock threat. On each trial, a series of letters was presented, followed by brief retention and response intervals. On low- and high-load trials, subjects retained the series (five and

The human skin is populated by recirculating T cells and skin-sessile resident memory T cells (TRM). Skin TRM are constructed during immune responses against antigens that the host immune system encounters in the skin. TRM persist in the same sites for a long time and play important protective roles in skin immune responses in collaboration with other skin-composing cells such as dendritic cells and keratinocytes. These TRM with strong effector functions possibly also engender skin inflammatory disorders. Since human skin T cells, especially TRM, are phenotypically distinct from T cells in the

Although anterograde amnesia can occur after damage in various brain sites, hippocampal dysfunction is usually seen as the ultimate cause of the failure to learn new episodic information. This assumption is supported by anatomical evidence showing direct hippocampal connections with all other sites implicated in causing anterograde amnesia. Likewise, behavioural and clinical evidence would seem to strengthen the established notion of an episodic memory system emanating from the hippocampus. There is, however, growing evidence that key, interconnected sites may also regulate the hippocampus, re

OBJECTIVE: Visual memory is an important cognitive ability, which has been studied in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs). In such studies meaningful shapes were used more frequently. Since meaningless shapes provide a better assessment of short term visual memory, in this study we used them to evaluate visual memory in children and adolescents with ASDs compared to the normal group.
METHODS: Four visual memory tests of Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) including Paired Associates Learning (PAL), Pattern Recognition Memory (PRM), Spatial Recognition Me
