Social face processing in chronic severe traumatic brain injury: Altered decoding of emotions and mental states but preserved gaze cueing of attention.

The processing of social information transmitted by facial stimuli is altered in individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI). This study investigated whether these alterations also affect the mechanisms underlying the orienting of visual attention in response to eye-gaze signals. TBI patients and a control group of healthy individuals matched on relevant criteria completed a spatial cueing task. In this task, a lateral visual target was presented along with a task-irrelevant face, with the gaze averted to the left or right. Arrows pointing towards the left or right were also used as non-soci

Multiple health risk behaviors, including high consumption of ultra-processed foods and their implications for mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The growing increase in diet- and behavior-related illnesses has drawn the attention of many epidemiologists who attribute such changes to the epidemiological and nutritional transition. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the association between the combined occurrence of health risk behaviors, such as sedentary lifestyles, high weekly consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs), and non-daily consumption of fruits and vegetables, and symptoms of anxiety or depression in adults. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study based on an epidemiological survey in two Brazilian cit

Chronic treatment with a tryptophan-rich protein hydrolysate improves emotional processing, mental energy levels and reaction time in middle-aged women.

Common pharmacological treatments of mood disorders aim to modulate serotonergic neurotransmission and enhance serotonin levels in the brain. Brain serotonin levels are dependent on the availability of its food-derived precursor essential amino acid tryptophan (Trp). We tested the hypothesis that delivery of Trp via food may serve as an alternative treatment, and examined the effects of a Trp-rich, bioavailable dietary supplement from egg protein hydrolysate on cognitive and emotional functions, mood state, and sleep quality. In a randomised, placebo-controlled, parallel trial, fifty-nine ment

Longitudinal evolution of the transdiagnostic prodrome to severe mental disorders: a dynamic temporal network analysis informed by natural language processing and electronic health records.

Modelling the prodrome to severe mental disorders (SMD), including unipolar mood disorders (UMD), bipolar mood disorders (BMD) and psychotic disorders (PSY), should consider both the evolution and interactions of symptoms and substance use (prodromal features) over time. Temporal network analysis can detect causal dependence between and within prodromal features by representing prodromal features as nodes, with their connections (edges) indicating the likelihood of one feature preceding the other. In SMD, node centrality could reveal insights into important prodromal features and potential int

Diagnostic overshadowing and other challenges involved in the diagnostic process of patients with mental illness who present in emergency departments with physical symptoms--a qualitative study.

We conducted a qualitative study in the Emergency Departments (EDs) of four hospitals in order to investigate the perceived scope and causes of 'diagnostic overshadowing'--the misattribution of physical symptoms to mental illness--and other challenges involved in the diagnostic process of people with mental illness who present in EDs with physical symptoms. Eighteen doctors and twenty-one nurses working in EDs and psychiatric liaisons teams in four general hospitals in the UK were interviewed. Interviewees were asked about cases in which mental illness interfered with diagnosis of physical pro

Lost in between-the transition process from a child and adolescent eating disorder service to adult mental health services in the German health care system.

INTRODUCTION: In young adults with anorexia nervosa (AN), the process of transition from a child and adolescent mental health service (CAMHS) to an adult mental health service (AMHS) has been recognized as critical, and many patients fear falling through the gap between the two types of service. As reports about the transition process in emerging adults with AN are scarce, the present study aimed to explore the problems and experiences of this age group. METHOD: We screened our registry for patients with AN who had been treated as inpatients during childhood and/or adolescence and come of age

Comparing sensory processing in children with Down syndrome to a mental age matched sample of children with autism, other developmental disabilities, and typically developing children.

BACKGROUND: Atypical sensory processing impacts children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Research has focused on SP in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD); comparatively, little has been written regarding individuals with Down syndrome (DS) and IDDs. AIMS: We compared patterns of sensory processing in children with DS to children with ASD, other IDDs, and typically developing (TD) peers examining the relationship among different sensory processing measures. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: We analyzed cross-sectional data using two caregiver questionnaires (SP, SEQ

Gender congruence and mental health problems among Chinese transgender and gender non-conforming individuals: A process model involving rumination and stigma consciousness.

OBJECTIVE: The present study examined the roles of gender identity rumination and stigma consciousness in the relationship between gender congruence (comfort with one's gender identity and external appearance) and mental health problems (anxiety and depression). METHODS: Three hundred and fourteen Chinese individuals identified as transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) individuals were recruited through the Internet and answered an online questionnaire (Mage  = 24.34 years, standard deviation = 5.80). RESULTS: Gender congruence was associated with anxiety and depression through three i

How can the utilisation of help for mental disorders be improved? A quasi-experimental online study on the changeability of stigmatising attitudes and intermediate variables in the process of utilisation.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies show that even in highly developed countries many people with depression do not seek help for their mental health issues, despite promising prevention approaches encouraging people to seek help and reduce self-stigma. Therefore, an anti-stigma intervention study to support help-seeking behaviour will be developed on the basis of the newly explicated "Seeking Mental Health Care Model". METHODS: A quasi-experimental online study will be carried out to assess the effect of different intervention variables relevant for the help-seeking process. The study is con

Acceptability, feasibility and perceived benefits of integrating mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) into disease outbreak response in Western Uganda: a qualitative process evaluation study.

INTRODUCTION: Disease outbreaks cause widespread suffering, loss of lives and significantly increase the risk of mental health and psychosocial problems. Although mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) plays a critical role in addressing the needs of populations affected by outbreaks, limited efforts have been made to integrate MHPSS into outbreak response mechanisms. In this study, we developed, implemented and evaluated priority MHPSS interventions to examine acceptability, feasibility and perceived benefit of MHPSS interventions as part of outbreak response in Uganda. METHODS: The

Collaboration Leading to Addiction Treatment and Recovery from Other Stresses (CLARO): process of adapting collaborative care for co-occurring opioid use and mental disorders.

BACKGROUND: Opioid use disorders (OUD), co-occurring with either depression and/or PTSD, are prevalent, burdensome, and often receive little or low-quality care. Collaborative care is a service delivery intervention that uses a team-based model to improve treatment access, quality, and outcomes in primary care patients, but has not been evaluated for co-occurring OUD and mental health disorders. To address this treatment and quality gap, we adapted collaborative care for co-occurring OUD and mental health disorders. METHODS: Our adapted model is called Collaboration Leading to Addiction Treat

Psychometric validation of research domain criteria, general health, and clinical-psychosocial parts of the minimum dataset of the German Center for Mental Health-informing a Delphi process.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the latent structure and conceptual validity of the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC), General Health, and Clinical/Psychosocial clusters of the German Center for Mental Health (DZPG) Minimum Data Set (MDS). It aimed to determine whether these clusters represent interpretable constructs and demonstrate cross-group comparability across clinical and non-clinical populations, providing a data-driven basis for item selection within a Delphi consensus process. METHODS: Two subsamples were analyzed: a representative sample (N = 2,287) and a clinic-recruited sample (N =

What Are the Experiences of Mental Health Practitioners Involved in a Coroner's Inquest and Other Inquiry Processes after an Unexpected Death of a Patient? A Systematic Review and Thematic Synthesis of the Literature.

Grief after suicide or patient-perpetrated homicide can be complex for those involved in the patient's care. Mental health practitioners with patients who die unexpectedly may be called to assist in the formal investigation processes that follow. The aim of this study was to examine the experience of mental health practitioners called to attend a coroner's inquest or other forms of formal inquiry. A protocol for a systematic review was prospectively registered on PROSPERO (CRD42023400310). A thematic synthesis of existing literature was conducted. We identified six articles for inclusion and c

"If there is a tension about something, I can solve it": A qualitative investigation of change processes in a trial of brief problem-solving interventions for common adolescent mental health problems in India.

OBJECTIVES: There is limited understanding of change processes and long-term effects of low-intensity psychosocial interventions. We investigated these aspects in two brief problem-solving intervention formats for adolescents with elevated mental health symptoms and associated distress/impairment. METHODS: This qualitative study was nested within a school-based randomized controlled trial in New Delhi, India, which compared two problem-solving intervention formats: a lay counsellor-led format supported by printed materials (intervention arm) and printed problem-solving materials alone ("bibli

Barriers and Facilitators in the Implementation of the Systematic Medical Appraisal, Referral, and Treatment (SMART) Mental Health Digital Intervention in Rural India: Mixed Methods Process Evaluation Study.

BACKGROUND: An estimated 150 million people have mental health care needs in India, but only 15% are able to access care. Depression and anxiety contribute to a large proportion of mental morbidity. The Systematic Medical Appraisal, Referral, and Treatment (SMART) Mental Health trial used a mobile-based clinical decision support system for primary care doctors and community health workers (CHWs) to identify and treat people at risk of depression, anxiety disorders, and self-harm. A community-based antistigma campaign was also delivered. The intervention led to improved remission rates for depr

Community-engaged adaptation and pilot testing of a mental health and substance use screening and referral process in HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) care in the Southern USA.

Mental health and substance use concerns are prevalent in HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)-seeking and priority populations (e.g., same gender loving black men (SGLBM)), often negatively affecting health care outcomes. Identifying individuals who could benefit from access to effective behavioral health treatment remains suboptimal among these populations. We utilized a community-informed process to adapt an evidence-based behavioral health identification and linkage model, Screening Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT), to include mental health screening and increase cultura
