Build Your Research Community (BYRC) is an asynchronous, free online course that guides research students to build effective relationships with their primary research advisors as well as build mentoring networks that provide holistic support as they navigate their research training experiences and careers. Preliminary evaluation evidence of the effectiveness of BYRC was collected from undergraduate, postbaccalaureate, and graduate students in 22 biomedical research training programs, as well as students who enrolled in the course independently from across the country. Students valued the cours

Mental-health difficulties are prevalent among psychologists, yet professionals in the field are often discouraged from disclosing their lived experience with psychopathology because of persistent stigma. Lived experience with psychopathology has historically been treated as a deficit within the profession. However, emerging research and perspectives are beginning to challenge this status quo by highlighting that lived experience can be an asset in psychological science and practice. Despite this shift, there remains little guidance on how to navigate this topic in mentor-mentee relationships.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic enucleation of the prostate (EEP) has become a gold standard for the surgical treatment of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Thulium fiber laser enucleation (ThuFLEP), due to its characteristics, may facilitate quicker and easier adoption for novice surgeons. This study compares the feasibility and the safety of ThuFLEP technique between two novice EEP teams, one with an on-site mentor and one without.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study involved 110 patients across two centers. The first, with a mentor (Center M), performed 50 procedures, while the second, w

BACKGROUND: Integrating complex interventions within healthcare settings can be challenging. Mentoring can be embedded within a randomised controlled trial (RCT) to upskill and support those delivering the intervention. This study aimed to understand, from a realist perspective, how mentoring worked to support implementation fidelity for occupational therapists (OTs) delivering a vocational rehabilitation (VR) intervention within the context of an RCT.
METHODS: A realist evaluation using secondary data (emails, mentoring record forms, interviews) collected as part of an RCT. Three researchers

Mentoring relationships are characterized by a sustained, high quality, and skill-building relationship between a protégé and mentor (Handbook of Youth Mentoring, Los Angeles, SAGE, 2014). Within prevention science, youth mentoring programs emphasize creating a specific context that benefits a young person. Program-sponsored relationships between youth and adults allow for creating a mentor-mentee partnership, but do not require the establishment of a strong bond in order to deliver prevention-focused activities and experiences (Handbook of Youth Mentoring, Los Angeles, SAGE, 2014). Endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approaches to craniopharyngioma has become increasingly popular over the last 15 years. We present the results of our retrospective series of craniopharyngiomata resected by an endoscopic, endonasal approach at a low-volume service in Australasia. Between the years of 2009 and 2017, 11 patients underwent pure endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal resection for a craniopharyngioma at our institutions. The medical records, histopathology, intraoperative findings and patient imaging were retrospectively assessed. 11 patients were included with 5 male and 6 fema

BACKGROUND: Although youth with disabilities have much to gain from employment readiness programs, they are often excluded from or have limited access to vocational programs. One encouraging approach to address gaps in vocational programming is through peer electronic mentoring (e-mentoring), which may facilitate a smoother transition to adulthood by offering support to enhance coping skills. Despite the increase in online communities, little is known about their impact on vocational mentoring for youth with physical disabilities and their parents.

INTRODUCTION: Mentoring programs can boost Speech & Language (SL) pathologists' satisfaction about their clinical skills, increasing their professional competence. A quality induction program provides a bridge for an efficient and comfortable transition between theoretical knowledge and clinical practice in front of clients. This transition can be especially difficult when the SL pathologist confronts patients with cleft palate.
OBJECTIVE: To study whether a mentoring program can improve SL Pathology students' performance for treating patients with cleft palate.

CONTEXT: Rates of rapid second births among low-income black adolescent mothers range from 20% to 50%. Most efforts to prevent rapid second births have been unsuccessful.
OBJECTIVES: There were 4 objectives: (1) to examine whether a home-based mentoring intervention was effective in preventing second births within 2 years of the adolescent mother's first delivery; (2) to examine whether greater intervention participation increased the likelihood of preventing a second birth; (3) to examine whether second births were better predicted from a risk practice perspective or a family formation persp

The goal of this study was to examine correlates of maternal-fetal attachment in a diverse sample of young pregnant mothers. Although studies have looked at social determinants of health and maternal-fetal attachment, none have examined correlates that may be more prevalent in younger populations including prenatal drug use or fear of childbirth. We analyzed data from a prospective cohort of 154 pregnant adolescents and young adults (75.5% Black/African American, 15.6% white, 7.5% biracial, 1.4% other) ranging from 14-21 years old. Participants were recruited early in pregnancy and completed o

BACKGROUND: Healthy Mothers Healthy Families (HMHF) is a women's health and empowerment programme designed to promote the health and well-being of mothers of children with a disability. An ongoing need to extend the reach of HMHF to more mothers, and increase scalability, resulted in development of a training programme based in principles of adult and transformative learning, to credential mothers as HMHF facilitators. The current study evaluated the process and outcomes of the competency training programme for new facilitators.
METHODS: A pretest and posttest design with midway data collecti

Background. The health impact of youth mentors serving in the delivery of child nutrition and physical activity (PA) interventions on youth mentors themselves has been understudied. Objective. The primary objective of the current study was to examine the impact of engaging youth mentors in the delivery of a summertime childhood obesity prevention intervention on youth mentors' behavioral health. Method. Data were collected at baseline and postintervention. A survey of validated nutrition, mental health, PA, and psychosocial questionnaires was administered. Diet was assessed via 24-hour recall.

BACKGROUND: Evidence shows that having a bowel management program prevents rehospitalization postacute rehabilitation discharge for persons with a spinal cord injury (SCI). Peer mentors have been used to assist patients in managing their care.
PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to illustrate how interprofessional collaboration led to utilizing resources of the inpatient rehabilitation facility's peer mentor program and incorporating peer mentors into bowel education for persons with SCI.
METHODS: A descriptive case review of a continuous quality improvement (CQI) project, using an eight-item

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this proof-of-concept pilot study was to assess the usefulness of a mentoring support program with a goal to improve hope for recovery in people with an eating disorder.
RESULTS: Significant improvements (p ≤ 0.05) in hope for recovery were found for the mentees in the following domains: social relationships (p = 0.027), romantic relationships (p = 0.032), family life (p = 0.047), work (0.003) and overall scores (p = 0.003). There were no significant findings for any of the areas for the mentors. Despite this, mentoring programs that focus on improving hope may provide a

In 1986, enough information was available based on studies by investigators from four continents to propose a model of the pathogenesis of Type 1A diabetes. The model divided pathogenesis into a series of stages with the proposal that insulin-dependent diabetes was a chronic autoimmune disorder. Long-term studies of non-diabetic identical twins of patients with Type 1A diabetes indicated that chronic loss of the ability to secrete insulin preceded the onset of diabetes in the presence of both genetic susceptibility and expression of anti-islet autoantibodies. It is now clear that the great maj

A healthcare workforce reflective of the population is essential to improving access and quality, yet students from low socioeconomic and underrepresented backgrounds continue to face barriers to entry. Early exposure and mentorship programs are critical strategies to address these gaps. We evaluated the Horizons Mentoring Program, a novel multilevel pipeline model that integrates medical students, undergraduates, and predominantly low-income, Black high school students from local communities into mentoring families across two consecutive cohorts. All families concurrently participated in mont
