Acute Submaximal Running Potentiates the Straub Tail Response to Meperidine in a Dose- and Sex-Dependent Manner in Mice.

Physical exercise recruits endogenous opioid mechanisms in the central nervous system, but whether this physiological opioid tone potentiates the effects of exogenous μ-agonists, and whether such interactions differ between sexes, remains unknown. Here, we used the Straub tail response as a behavioral index of central μ2-opioid receptor activity to investigate whether acute submaximal running modulates the pharmacodynamic effects of meperidine in male and female Swiss mice. In resting animals, meperidine produced a dose- and time-dependent Straub tail response across a 12-fold dose range, and

Analgesia and behavioral responses of dogs given oxymorphone-acepromazine and meperidine-acepromazine after methoxyflurane and halothane anesthesia.

This study was designed to test analgesia, duration, and cardiovascular changes induced by meperidine (MEP) and oxymorphone (OXY) following methoxyflurane (MOF) and halothane (HAL) anesthesia. Eight healthy dogs were given atropine and acepromazine, and anesthesia was induced with thiamylal and maintained with 1.5 minimal alveolar concentration of MOF or HAL for 1 hour during controlled ventilation. Eight treatments were given with each anesthetic: 3 with MEP (0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mg/kg, IV), 3 with oxymorphone (OXY; 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2 mg/kg, IV), and 2 placebos with sterile water. Test drugs wer

Comparative effectiveness of dexmedetomidine and meperidine for the treatment of postanesthetic shivering: a propensity score-matched retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Postanesthetic shivering (PAS) is a common and distressing complication in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). Meperidine has traditionally been used for PAS treatment, but interest in non-opioid alternatives has increased. We compared the effectiveness and safety of dexmedetomidine versus meperidine for the treatment of PAS. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 484 adult patients who developed PAS in the PACU after surgery between January and December 2024 and received intravenous dexmedetomidine or meperidine as the initial treatment. The primary outcome was treat

Meperidine pharmacokinetics and effects on physiologic parameters and thermal threshold following intravenous administration of three doses to horses.

BACKGROUND: Meperidine is a synthetic opioid that belongs to the phenylpiperidine class and is a weak mu receptor agonist. In horses there are a limited number of published studies describing the analgesic effects of systemically administered meperidine in horses. The objective of this study was to describe the pharmacokinetics, behavioral and physiologic effects and effect on thermal threshold of three doses of intravenously administered meperidine to horses. Eight University owned horses (four mares and four geldings, aged 3-8 years were studied using a randomized balanced 4-way cross-over d

Naloxone induces excitation of the cardiovascular system and a rise in myocardial oxygen consumption in fentanyl and meperidine-anesthetized dogs.

Naloxone, when administered for the purpose in reversing opiate-induced respiratory depression after morphine- or fentanyl-anesthesia may precipitate an increase in sympathetic tone with subsequent cardiovascular reactions. In order to investigate which variable of the cardiovascular system is affected most and to compare whether the effects after fentanyl anesthesia (0.05 mg/kg) differ markedly from those after sole equianesthetic meperidine-anesthesia (20 mg/kg), naloxone (5 microgram/kg) was given shortly (15 min.) after opiate injection. In the fentanyl group (n = 7) compared to the anesth

Side effects of morphine patient-controlled analgesia and meperidine patient-controlled analgesia: a follow-up of 500 patients.

Many physicians, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs), and registered nurses have the clinical impression that either morphine sulfate or meperidine hydrochloride is a better drug to control postoperative pain. In this study, we evaluated pain relief and side effects for these two drugs to assess their potential differences. CRNAs conducted a structured interview of 500 female patients 24 hours after major gynecologic, urologic, or breast surgery. Patients' responses on 4-point scales of none, mild, moderate, and severe were collected for pain intensity, degree of nausea, severity o

Comparison of dexmedetomidine and meperidine for the prevention of shivering following coronary artery bypass graft: study protocol of a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Shivering is a common complication in the postoperative period. The incidence of shivering has been reported to range from 5% to 65% under general anaesthesia and as 33% during epidural anaesthesia. Shivering can increase perioperative risk in patients. Both dexmedetomidine and meperidine are effective agents for the prevention of postanaesthetic shivering. However, few studies have compared the anti-shivering effects of different agents following coronary artery bypass graft (CABG). This study aims to compare the effects of dexmedetomidine and meperidine on the incidence of shiv

The effect of intra-articular meperidine and bupivacaine 0.5% on postoperative pain of arthroscopic knee surgery; a randomized double blind clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Arthroscopic knee surgeries have a painful postoperative course, which often necessitates acute pain management. Among different analgesia techniques, Intra-articular injection is the technique of choice for many pain specialists, based on its confined effect to the surgical site (knee), lack of systemic effects and promotion of safe early ambulation. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to compare analgesic effects of intra-articular meperidine, bupivacaine 0.5% or their combination after knee arthroscopic surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixty ASA class I-II patients' candidates
