Color-reversible fluorescence tracking for the dynamic interaction of SO2 with Hg2+ in living cells.

Mercury ion (Hg2+) is one of the most threatening substances to human health, and the mercury poisoning can damage physiological homeostasis severely in human, even cause death. Intriguingly, Sulfur dioxide (SO2), a gas signal molecule in human, can specifically interact with Hg2+ for relieving mercury poisoning. However, the dynamic interaction of Hg2+ with SO2 at the tempospatial level and the correlation between Hg2+ and SO2 in the pathological process of mercury poisoning are still elusive. Herein, we rationally designed a reversible and dual color fluorescent probe (CCS) for dynamically v

Toxicity of mercury.

A ruling by the European Union heralds the demise of those useful clinical instruments, the mercury thermometer and the mercury sphygmomanometer. The new laws have been passed because of worries about mercury poisoning. Yet you can drink metallic mercury and come to no harm. What does it all mean? There are three forms of mercury from a toxicological point of view: inorganic mercury salts; organic mercury compounds; and metallic mercury. Inorganic mercury salts are water soluble, irritate the gut, and cause severe kidney damage. Organic mercury compounds, which are fat soluble, can cross the b

Extracorporeal regional complexing haemodialysis treatment of acute inorganic mercury intoxication.

A 70-year-old white female presented approximately 24 h after ingesting three 475 mg tablets (1.425 g) of mercuric chloride in a suicide attempt. Acute renal failure necessitated the initiation of haemodialysis approximately 4 d after the ingestion. Treatment with BAL (2,3-dimercaptopropanol) resulted in only small increases in mercury output into dialysate. A new procedure involving the extracorporeal infusion of the chelating agent dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) into the arterial blood line during haemodialysis was initiated. This procedure of Extracorporeal Regional Complexing Haemodialysis

[The toxic effect of mercury in occupational exposure].

The paper addresses the problems of environmental and occupational exposures to mercury compounds. Mercury and its compounds are very toxic. Occupational exposure and environmental pollution are the major sources of hazard to human health. Metallic mercury evaporates at room temperature producing inorganic and organic compounds, and forms amalgams with many metals. In more than 50 professions, workers may be exposed to mercury, particularly in the mining and chemical industries and in agriculture. Occupational poisoning is rarely acute but it is usually chronic. The symptoms result from the da

Rethinking the Minamata Tragedy: What Mercury Species Was Really Responsible?

Industrial release of mercury into the local Minamata environment with consequent poisoning of local communities through contaminated fish and shellfish consumption is considered the classic case of environmental mercury poisoning. However, the mercury species in the factory effluent has proved controversial, originally suggested as inorganic, and more recently as methylmercury species. We used newly available methods to re-examine the cerebellum of historic Cat 717, which was fed factory effluent mixed with food to confirm the source. Synchrotron high-energy-resolution fluorescence detection-

Proton magnetic resonance imaging and phosphorus-31 NMR studies on the rat brain intoxicated with methyl mercury.

Model rats of methyl mercury intoxication were made by orally administering 5 mg mercury/kg methyl mercury daily for 12 days. Proton magnetic resonance imaging and phosphorus-31 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy measurements were performed on the brain of these model animals in vivo under anesthesia. Proton images contrasted with the longitudinal or transverse relaxation times of protons on water and lipid molecules exhibited an internal structure of the poisoned brain. No particular difference was, however, observed between the poisoned and normal control rats in either image. On the ot

An Unusual Cause of Complete Heart Block.

Mercury poisoning is most frequently associated with multiorgan toxicity involving the brain, lungs, and kidneys. Cardiotoxic effects of mercury are rare and often overlooked. We demonstrate mercury poisoning-induced cardiotoxicity through a case study and then provide a review of the incidence, pathophysiology, and associated management plans. This case illustrates the importance of thorough history-taking to promote early recognition of toxicity.

NELL-1 membranous nephropathy due to mercury exposure from fairness cream: Report of two cases.

Mercury contained in beauty-enhancing cosmetics can cause chronic poisoning and membranous nephropathy (MN). We report two cases of nephrotic syndrome caused by MN with evidence of mercury poisoning due to the application of fairness cream in a short duration of a few months. The individuals were positive for neural epidermal growth factor-like 1 [NELL-1]. Discontinuation of the use of cosmetic products and modified Ponticelli regimen improved the nephrotic state in these individuals. We suggest that mercury poisoning should be considered in NELL-1-positive individuals with a history of applic

Erethism Mercurialis and Reactions to Elemental Mercury.

Mercury is an underrecognized cause of heavy metal poisoning. Typically, mercury exposure occurs though consumption of methylmercury in seafood or acute inhalation of elemental mercury vapors, with other routes of exposure being uncommon. We describe a case of mercury toxicity resulting from intentional injection of liquid mercury into the right antecubital fossa in a suicide attempt. Mercury poisoning may present with characteristic neuropsychologic signs and symptoms. Increasing anxiety, depression, tremors, irritability, and difficulty concentrating coupled with blood mercury levels higher

Case report: severe mercuric sulphate poisoning treated with 2,3-dimercaptopropane-1-sulphonate and haemodiafiltration.

INTRODUCTION: Inorganic mercury poisoning is uncommon, but when it occurs it can result in severe, life-threatening features and acute renal failure. Previous reports on the use of extracorporeal procedures such as haemodialysis and haemoperfusion have shown no significant removal of mercury. We report here the successful use of the chelating agent 2,3-dimercaptopropane-1-sulphonate (DMPS), together with continuous veno-venous haemodiafiltration (CVVHDF), in a patient with severe inorganic mercury poisoning. Nutritional factors may modify the toxic action of methyl mercury in fish-eating populations.

The historical record of clinical cases of methyl mercury poisoning dates back to the 19th century when the first chemical synthesis occurred. The potent fungicidal properties of both methyl and the closely related ethyl mercury compound were subsequently discovered, which led to widespread agricultural application for prevention of fungal infection in seed grain. Several catastrophic outbreaks of poisoning occurred in the mid-20th century when the treated seed grain was mistakenly used to prepare homemade bread. The largest outbreak took place in rural Iraq in the early 1970s. Human poisoning

Environmental mercury and its toxic effects.

Mercury exists naturally and as a man-made contaminant. The release of processed mercury can lead to a progressive increase in the amount of atmospheric mercury, which enters the atmospheric-soil-water distribution cycles where it can remain in circulation for years. Mercury poisoning is the result of exposure to mercury or mercury compounds resulting in various toxic effects depend on its chemical form and route of exposure. The major route of human exposure to methylmercury (MeHg) is largely through eating contaminated fish, seafood, and wildlife which have been exposed to mercury through in

Urine mercury excretion following meso-dimercaptosuccinic acid challenge in fish eaters.

CONTEXT: Public awareness of methylmercury in fish has caused patients to seek testing for mercury poisoning. In some patients, the diagnosis of mercury poisoning has been made based on urine mercury excretions following oral dosing of meso-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA), a metal chelator. However, studies comparing urine mercury excretion following DMSA in healthy non-fish eaters with healthy fish eaters could not be located. OBJECTIVES: To describe urinary mercury excretion before and after DMSA in healthy fish eaters and non-fish eaters, and to determine whether urine mercury excretion aft

Cutaneous reaction from a broken thermometer.

A cutaneous and soft tissue reaction that resulted from a broken thermometer inside the mouth of a 10-year-old boy is described. Metallic mercury globules and glass pieces were identified in the excised tissue. On histologic examination, a zone of necrosis, polymorphonuclear leukocytes, macrophages, and multinucleated giant cells surrounded metallic mercury that appeared as dark opaque globules. Dense fibrosis and reactive lymphoid hyperplasia were also noted in the dermis and deeper tissues. The gold lysis test, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive x-ray analysis confirmed the

[Mercury concentration in fish taken from the second Songhua River and mercury intake by fish-consumers].

Dynamic changes of standardized mercury concentration in fish taken from the Second Songhua River were evaluated from 1973 to 1991. It decreased 82.6% during this period. And, mercury intake of fish-consuming population and its source were studied. The results proved mercury concentration accumulated in some of the high risk population in 70's came up to and exceeded the threshold for chronic methylmercury poisoning. But, since 1983 mercury level in human body has been dropping greatly, and now falls down below the safety limit. The above facts showed mercury contamination in the Second Songhu

2,3-Dimercaptosuccinic acid treatment of heavy metal poisoning in humans.

14 patients with heavy metal poisoning received 2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA). 12 subjects were given 30 mg/kg/day for 5 days; 1 subject was started on a lower dose because of a history of atopy; another subject was treated for 15 days because of very high initial blood lead concentrations. In the 9 subjects who had lead poisoning, DMSA decreased blood lead concentrations by 35 to 81%, and induced a 4.5- to 16.9-fold increase in mean daily urinary excretion of the metal. In the acutely arsenic-poisoned case, the plasma arsenic concentration on day 7 was half the pretreatment value, while

Prenatal and postnatal methyl mercury exposure in Niigata, Japan: adult outcomes.

Methyl mercury (MeHg) poisoning or Minamata disease (MD) from fish consumption is a public health concern throughout the world because all fish contain small amounts. The lowest exposure level needed to impair children's development is controversial. Actual poisoning with MeHg from fish consumption has been reliably reported only two times. It occurred in Minamata, Japan in the 1950s and then in Niigata, Japan in the 1960s. On each occasion, massive industrial pollution led to local fish having mercury levels as high as 40ppm. In Niigata the pollution was on the Agano River and there were over

Mercury intoxication after topical application of a metallic mercury ointment.

Two cases of mercury poisoning with predominantly dermatological symptoms are reported. The mercury intoxication was caused by the application of an over-the-counter metallic mercury ointment. The calculations of mercury excretion suggest strongly that cutaneous absorption could have been a significant route of entry.
