Descending projections to the hindbrain and spinal cord in the paddlefish Polyodon spathula.

In vertebrates, almost all motor neurons innervating skeletal muscles are located in the hindbrain and spinal cord, and all brain centers that control behavior have descending projections into these parts of the central nervous system. With tracer injections into the spinal cord and hindbrain, we have studied cell groups with descending projections in the paddlefish. Spinal cord injections reveal retrogradely labeled cells in all reticular and raphe nuclei, as well as the nucleus of the medial longitudinal fascicle. Additional cell groups with projections to the spinal cord are the nucleus of

Chronic acquired hepatic failure: MR imaging of the brain at 1.5 T.

The results of MR imaging of the brain at 1.5 T in 42 adults with non-Wilsonian chronic hepatic failure are reported. T1-weighted images demonstrated increased signal in the globus pallidus in 30 patients and in the putamen in 21, while T2-weighted images demonstrated no corresponding alteration in signal intensity. Symmetric low intensity in the central portion of the globus pallidus on spin-density and T2-weighted images in two patients correlated with regions of calcification on CT scans. Increased intensity on T1-weighted images also occurred in the mesencephalon surrounding the red nucleu

Ontogeny of substantia nigra dopamine neurons.

Understanding the ontogeny of A9 dopamine (DA) neurons is critical not only to determining basic developmental events that facilitate the emergence of the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) but also to the extraction and de novo generation of DA neurons as a potential cell therapy for Parkinson's disease. Recent research has identified a precise window for DA cell birth (differentiation) in the ventral mesencephalon (VM) as well as a number of factors that may facilitate this process. However, application of these factors in vitro has had limited success in specifying a dopaminergic cell fat

The leukemic oncogene tal-2 is expressed in the developing mouse brain.

tal-1 (T-cell acute leukemia-1; also known as SCL) and tal-2 genes belong to a family of basic helix-loop-helix transcription factors and were originally isolated from the breakpoints of chromosomal translocations in human T-cell leukemia cell lines. tal-1 is expressed not only in hematopoietic cells but also in several endothelial structures and the central nervous system during development. On the other hand, the detailed function and the sites of expression of tal-2 have remained obscure. We cloned the tal-2 cDNA from a mouse embryonic cDNA library and examined its expression pattern in the

The excitation and inhibition of sexual receptivity in female hamsters by progesterone: time and dose relationships, neural localization and mechanisms of action.

Ovariectomized hamsters were administered estradiol benzoate (EB) and 44 h later, progesterone (P.) Lordosis behavior was induced. When an additional dose of P was given up to 24 h prior to or 24 h after the EB, EB-P facilitation of lordosis was inhibited. Additional hamsters were given varying doses of P (25-200 mu) following EB using both excitatory and inhibitory paradigms. Inhibition of EB-induced lordosis was effected with a lower dose of P than was the facilitation of EB induced lordosis by P. Hamsters were also given intracerebral implants of P using excitatory and inhibitory paradigms.

Fascicular oculomotor nerve palsy in neuro-Behçet's disease.

A 43-year-old man with Behçet's disease developed a left oculomotor palsy and a right elevation paresis. His clinical picture was consistent with an isolated fascicular third cranial nerve palsy, considering the mass effect of a large left capsulothalamic lesion extending down into the mesencephalon, which was visualized by CT and (more precisely) by MRI. The patient's clinical status was improved with steroid and immunosuppressive therapy, and radiologic abnormalities resolved markedly in a month.

Alpha adrenergic and mu-2 opioid receptors are involved in morphine-induced suppression of splenocyte natural killer activity.

The immunosuppressive effects following acute morphine administration have been mapped to opioid receptors in the central nervous system, specifically to the periaqueductal gray matter of the mesencephalon. The mesencephalon is associated with sympathetic neuronal processes, and the spleen is innervated with sympathetic neurons that are in direct apposition with lymphocytes in the periarteriolar lymphatic sheath. Accordingly, we investigated adrenergic involvement following morphine administration on natural killer (NK) activity by splenic lymphocytes. Acute morphine administration (25 mg/kg s

Distribution of 2-.

Using in vitro autoradiography, the distribution of 2-[125I]iodomelatonin (IMEL) binding sites in the brain of the pied flycatcher and the zebra finch was examined. The results show IMEL binding in retinofugal, tectofugal and thalamofugal brain areas of the visual system. Additionally, IMEL binding sites were detected in the ectostriatum, the thalamus, the mesencephalon and the limbic system. No IMEL binding could be demonstrated in the pineal gland, the hippocampus, the nucleus suprachiasmaticus, the visual wulst or the pituitary.

Hydrocephalus due to extreme dilation of Virchow-Robin spaces.

Virchow-Robin spaces (VRS) are extensions of the subarachnoid space surrounding perforating blood vessels entering the brain parenchyma. VRS are fluid filled, but almost virtual and only visible on MRI of the brain when dilated. Such dilations are commonly asymptomatic. In rare cases, extreme dilations can be observed; the clinical repercussions of which remain unclear. We report the case of a patient presenting symptoms of normal pressure hydrocephalus due to extreme VRS mesencephalon dilations.

Audiovisual peduncular hallucinations: a release of cross-modal integration sites?

We report the case of a patient with multiple sclerosis with congruent visual and auditory hallucinations of deceased familiar persons that lasted continuously for several days. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an isolated, predominantly left-sided lesion in the periaqueductal segment of the mesencephalon. We propose that these hallucinations represent a bimodal variant of classic peduncular hallucinations, brought about by a deregulation of modulatory superior collicular activity and a release of cross-modal integrative functions of the superior temporal sulcus.

The neurosteroid dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate is an allosteric antagonist of the GABAA receptor.

Binding of the neurosteroid dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) to rat brain synaptosomal membranes was studied in vitro, and the interaction of DHEAS with the GABAA receptor was tested using biochemical and electrophysiological assays. DHEAS bound to two populations of sites, and its binding was inhibited by barbiturates. DHEAS interfered with barbiturate-mediated enhancement of benzodiazepine binding. In cultured neurons from ventral mesencephalon, DHEAS reversibly blocked GABA-induced currents, behaving as an allosteric antagonist of the GABAA receptor.

A trembling detour to the diagnosis of encephalitis: a neuroborreliosis case report.

In this Clinical Rounds, we present a case of neuroborreliosis in a man aged 59 years who initially complained of headache, tremor, and hiccups. Diagnosis was delayed, partly due to an atypical presentation but mainly because subtle MRI findings were overlooked. There is emerging recognition that radial and patchy hyperintensities in cerebral peduncles, mesencephalon, and pons is a distinct MRI feature of neuroborreliosis. Dissemination of this knowledge could contribute to more timely and efficient diagnoses in future patients.

Additive effect of distant Lewy bodies and tau seeds injections on nigral degeneration in macaques.

The influence of Lewy body (LB) and tau co-pathologies is increasingly acknowledged as putatively affecting neurodegeneration and clinical phenotypes. Here, we injected rhesus macaques with LB fractions or/and tau seeds derived from patients brains into distinct brain areas connected to the mesencephalon. Compared to control macaques, we observed increased mesencephalic staining of pathological α-synuclein and tau, as well as nigrostriatal dopaminergic neuronal loss, with a cumulative effect of co-pathology.

A neuropathologic study of Whipple's disease.

A patient with Whipple's disease developed massive and irreversible CNS involvement after a drug-induced intestinal remission. The multifocal brain lesions were apparent grossly with the heaviest concentration being noted in rhinencephalon, diencephalon, and mesencephalon. This patient exhibited progressive neurologic deterioration, although viable organisms could not be identified in the brain at autopsy. Astrocytes, pericytes, and choroid plexus cells attempted to dispose of the organism, in additional to the traditionally implicated microglial and ependymal cell.

First trimester size charts of embryonic brain structures.

STUDY QUESTION: Can reliable size charts of human embryonic brain structures be created from three-dimensional ultrasound (3D-US) visualizations? SUMMARY ANSWER: Reliable size charts of human embryonic brain structures can be created from high-quality images. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Previous studies on the visualization of both the cavities and the walls of the brain compartments were performed using 2D-US, 3D-US or invasive intrauterine sonography. However, the walls of the diencephalon, mesencephalon and telencephalon have not been measured non-invasively before. Last-decade improvements in

Increased midbrain gray matter in Tourette's syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate cerebral structure in Tourette's syndrome (TS). METHODS: Voxel-based morphometry study of high-resolution MRIs in 31 TS patients compared with 31 controls. RESULTS: Increased gray matter mainly in the left mesencephalon in 31 TS patients. INTERPRETATION: This result constitutes strong and direct evidence supporting Devinsky's hypothesis (Devinsky O. Neuroanatomy of Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome. Possible midbrain involvement. Arch Neurol 1983;40:508-514) according to which midbrain disturbances play an important pathogenic role in TS.

Neural projections of the pineal organ in the larval sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus L.) revealed by indocarbocyanine dye tracing.

The distribution of the central neural connections of the pineal organ of the larval sea lamprey was investigated by means of anterograde and retrograde tracing with the fluorescent lipophilic dye, DiI (1,1'-dioctadecyl 3,3,3',3'-tetramethylindocarbocyanine perchlorate). Pinealofugal projections are well developed in larvae, extending from the posterior commissure into the diencephalon and mesencephalon. Small numbers of neurons were retrogradely labelled in the transition zone between the diencephalon and the mesencephalic tegmentum. These cells may constitute the first pinealopetal system de

Hemiparkinsonism-hemiatrophy syndrome: neuroradiological and neurophysiological findings.

A rare form of secondary parkinsonism has been recently described as 'hemiparkinsonism-hemiatrophy syndrome'. We report a case with such clinical features. A neurophysiological study of the evoked potentials, somatosensory and motor, has been conducted. We stress the neuroradiological findings at nuclear magnetic resonance, which documented the presence of an area of altered signal in the mesencephalon, between the cerebral pedunculus and the red nucleus on the right side. The etiopathogenetic considerations and diagnostic criteria are discussed. Moreover we evaluate the efficacy of levodopa t

Mesencephalic haematoma: case report with autopsy study.

A 70-year-old hypertensive woman suffered sudden onset of bilateral blepharoptosis. Within a few hours she developed focal signs attributable to a lesion of the mesencephalon, and a stuporous state, from which she did not recover. Neuropathological examination showed a mesencephalic haematoma, but no arteriovenous malformation. A review of reported cases suggests that mesencephalic haematomas have a worse prognosis when they occur in aged hypertensive patients, as compared with younger normotensive patients, in whom they are probably related to arteriovenous malformations.

The vascular locked-in and locked-in-plus syndrome: A retrospective case series.

The locked-in syndrome (LiS) is defined as the loss of most voluntary muscle movements with preserved cognitive abilities due to a ventral pontine lesion. However, some patients may also have severe impairment of consciousness [locked-in plus syndrome (LiPS)]. Here we aimed to explore structural differences between LiS and LiPS patients of vascular aetiology, focusing on lesion patterns and locations to better delineate the clinical spectrum of LiS and LiPS. In this retrospective case series study, we report nine patients (two women), ages 29-74 years (median 50) with LiS and LiPS who were dia
