Gastrointestinal leiomyosarcomas are rare malignancies. Herein, we present a case report of a previously healthy 60-year-old female presenting with periumbilical abdominal pain, vomiting, and difficulty in passing stool, with clinical workup, imaging, and surgery defining a small intestine tumor. Histology defined the tumor as a mesenteric pleomorphic leiomyosarcoma.

Primary neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) arising exclusively within the mesentery, without an identifiable gastrointestinal or pancreatic primary, are exceedingly rare and often present with non-specific symptoms, making preoperative diagnosis challenging. We report the case of an 80-year-old female who presented with a six-month history of right-sided abdominal pain and a palpable abdominal mass. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the abdomen revealed a well-defined soft tissue lesion measuring 7.1 × 4.4 × 5.3 cm in the right iliac fossa mesentery, with vascular supply from the superior mes

Hemangiolymphangioma is a rare malformation of the vascular and lymphatic system affecting different parts of the human body. Hemangiolymphangioma of the small bowel mesentery is extremely rare. We report the case of a 23-year-old woman who presented with generalized colicky abdominal pain. Computed tomography findings were initially thought to represent possible secondary mesenteric and peritoneal metastatic deposits. However, no primary tumor was identified. A pelvic magnetic resonance imaging was then performed, which favored the diagnosis of extensive mesenteric lymphangiomatosis. The diag

OBJECTIVE: To illustrate the laparoscopic removal of a parasitic leiomyoma in the mesentery, which developed from a morcellation remnant following a laparoscopic myomectomy.
SETTING: University hospital. A stepwise surgical demonstration with narrated video footage.
PARTICIPANTS: A patient with a large pelvic mass two years after undergoing laparoscopic myomectomy.
INTERVENTIONS: The 31-year-old patient underwent laparoscopic myomectomy approximately two years prior, with no record of contained morcellation. Based on our inference, it is likely that a retrieval bag was not utilized during t

Mucinous cystic neoplasms (MCNs) are rare tumors primarily observed in the pancreas but occasionally found in other locations such as the retroperitoneum, ovary, liver, and spleen. These neoplasms are histologically classified based on the degree of dysplasia, with some associated with invasive carcinoma. Colorectal surgeons infrequently encounter MCNs. Mesenteric MCNs pose a diagnostic challenge secondary to their atypical location, subtle histology, and lack of specific biochemical markers. In this context, we present a case involving a 68-year-old female who initially presented with an assu

BACKGROUND: Prior to 2012, the mesentery was perceived as a fragmented structure, lacking distinct functional and anatomical characteristics, and was merely considered part of other digestive organs. Dr. J. Calvin Coffey's in 2012 in his study redefined the mesentery as a distinct organ with a clearly defined anatomical and histological structure, although its specific function remains under investigation. The continuous structure and unique tissue properties of the mesentery classify it as the 78th independent organ in the human body. Insights into mesenteric adipose tissue have enhanced our

We describe a case of benign inverted papilloma with intracranial extension treated with endoscopic resection combined with craniotomy. Intracranial involvement of inverted papilloma, in the absence of malignancy, is uncommon. We present an analysis of the literature identifying the characteristics and outcomes of benign intracranial inverted papilloma. PubMed database was searched using keywords intracranial, inverted or inverting, and papilloma. There are 17 reports of benign inverted papilloma with intracranial extension reported with a mean age of 49.2 years (range, 23 to 92 years), a fema

Mesenteric leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a rare gastrointestinal mesenchymal tumor. It was often misdiagnosed as a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) until the introduction of immunohistochemistry staining (IHC) in 1998. Currently, a positive IHC staining for smooth muscle markers represents the main diagnostic modality. Herein, we present a case of Mesenteric LMS in a 68-year-old woman, who presented with nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain and was found to have a right-sided mesenteric tumor encasing the right ureter, with right hydroureteronephrosis. The patient underwent surgical removal of

BACKGROUND: Perforation of Meckel's diverticulum by a foreign body in children is rarely reported and is usually associated with localized or generalized fibropurulent peritonitis.
CASE PRESENTATION: The authors encountered such a case in a 4-year-old boy with perforation of Meckel's diverticulum by a piece of peanut presenting as a mesentery abscess. The diverticulum was wide-based and histology showed a transmural perforation at the tip of the diverticulum.
CONCLUSION: Local inflammation due to irritation of the foreign body and progressive pressure necrosis at the tip of the diverticulum

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm usually found in the pleura, soft tissues and visceral organs. We describe one case arising in the mesentery, which is an exceptional localization.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 71-year-old man was referred to our establishment for a painless hypogastric mass. Further investigation revealed a vascular tumor, which was resected en bloc. Pathological findings confirmed solitary fibrous tumor of the mesentery.
CONCLUSION: This is the second case of solitary fibrous tumor of the small intestine mesentery ever reported. It was managed

Glomus tumors usually occur in the acral soft tissue and rarely in visceral locations, such as the stomach, intestines, mediastinum, lung, pancreas, bladder, and vagina. The authors present a 74-year-old woman with an exceptionally large glomus tumor of the mesentrium with malignant features. Previously reported cases of intraabdominal glomus tumor in the abdominal cavity exhibited benign behavior and few cases with metastatic disease. Criteria for malignancy in acral glomus tumors, such as unusually large size, infiltrative growth, necrosis, nuclear atypia, and mitotic activity, seem not to t

BACKGROUND: ACTH overproduction within the pituitary gland or ectopically leads to hypercortisolism. Here, we report the first case of Cushing' syndrome caused by an ectopic ACTH-secreting neuroendocrine carcinoma of the mesentery. Moreover, diagnostic procedures and pitfalls associated with ectopic ACTH-secreting tumors are demonstrated and discussed.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 41 year-old man presented with clinical features and biochemical tests suggestive of ectopic Cushing's syndrome. First, subtotal thyroidectomy was performed without remission of hypercortisolism, because an octreotide scan

We herein describe the case of a 27-year-old female, who presented with a large mass of the upper left abdominal cavity discovered incidentally, through an annual health examination. Preoperative studies including abdominal ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging were performed, but they could not accurately determine the nature of the tumor. At laparotomy, a large cystic tumor of the small bowel mesentery was found. Histopathologic examination diagnosed the tumor as a cystic lymphangioma. Although lymphangiomas are rare, especially in the abdomen of adults, they may sometimes present a

We describe a patient, 54-year-old woman, with lymphangiomas of the jejunum and mesentery presenting as acute abdomen. She had sudden onset of severe abdominal pain with guarding and fever. Physical examination revealed an elastic hard mass, with marked tenderness in the right abdominal region. Ultrasonography and computed tomography revealed a heterogenous mass, 20 x 15 x 8cm in size, in the mesentery. An emergency operation was performed with the diagnosis of diffuse peritonitis due to an inflammatory tumor in the mesentery. At operation, the tumor was found in the mesentery, adhering to a 6

Previous studies showed the existence of submesothelial fenestrated capillaries in the human parietal and rabbit diaphragmatic peritoneum, as well as in the mouse mesentery. The present study demonstrates the presence of electronegative fixed charges at the luminal aspect of endothelial cells, as well as long the subendothelial basement membrane of the fenestrated capillaries of the mouse mesentery. This situation will eventually preclude the transfenestral passage of anionic plasma proteins. On the other hand, fenestrated capillaries are much more permeable to water and small-molecular-size s

The case of a twelve year-old boy suffering from "common ileocolic mesentery" with surgical finding of very serious splanchnic venous dilatation is presented. Mesenteric arteriography was the most useful test for diagnosis. The surgical technique has been compared with that described by other Authors.
