The role of calpain and calpastatin in the catabolism of erythrocyte-membrane proteins during anaemia in hamsters (Mesocricetus auretus) infected with Leishmania donovani.

The anaemia associated with visceral leishmaniasis is accompanied by altered Ca(2+) homeostasis and degradation of the cytoskeletal and integral proteins of the erythrocytic membrane. In the present study, such changes were followed in hamsters that were anaemic as the result of their experimental infection with Leishmania donovani. At each stage of the infection, the blood concentration of haemoglobin was found to be negatively correlated with the concentration of Ca(2+) (R(2) = 0.91), the percentage of erythrocytes with Heinz bodies (R(2) = 0.98) and thiol depletion (R(2) = 0.96) in the eryt

Inhalation of mainstream and sidestream cigarette smoke retards embryo transport and slows muscle contraction in oviducts of hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus).

Prior experiments have shown that the functioning of hamster oviducts is impaired by in vitro exposure to cigarette smoke. To determine if cigarette smoke affects oviductal functioning in vivo, an inhalation experiment was done in which hamsters were exposed to doses of smoke similar to those received by human smokers. The effects of mainstream smoke (the bolus of smoke inhaled by active smokers) and sidestream smoke (the main component in environmental tobacco smoke) were compared. Transport of preimplantation embryos through the hamster oviduct was retarded in females inhaling doses of mains

Indications for the presence of two populations of serotonin-containing pinealocytes in the pineal complex of the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus). An immunohistochemical study.

Serotonin-like immunoreactivity was investigated in the pineal complex of the golden hamster by use of the indirect immunohistochemical technique. The superficial and deep portions of the pineal gland, and also the pineal stalk exhibited an intense cellular immunoreaction for serotonin. In addition, perivascular serotonin-immunoreactive nerve fibers were observed. Some serotonin-immunoreactive processes of the pinealocytes terminated on the surface of the ventricular lumen in the pineal and suprapineal recesses, indicating a receptive or secretory function of these cells. Several serotonin-imm

Effects of different numbers of ectopic pituitary transplants on regulation of testicular LH/hCG and prolactin receptors in the hamster (Mesocricetus auratus).

Adult male hamsters were given transplants of 1/2, 1, 2, 3 or 4 pituitaries under the kidney capsule and were killed 4 weeks later. Pituitary transplants produced a significant, dose-related increase in plasma prolactin levels, no changes in plasma LH and an increase in plasma FSH. Concentration of LH/hCG receptors in the testes was significantly increased in animals with 2 or 3 transplants and concentration of testicular prolactin receptors was significantly increased in those given 2 transplants. The apparent stimulatory effects of 1/2, 1 or 4 transplants on testicular LH/hCG and prolactin b

Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) oronasally inoculated with a Nipah virus isolate from Bangladesh or Malaysia develop similar respiratory tract lesions.

Nipah virus is a paramyxovirus in the genus Henipavirus, which has caused outbreaks in humans in Malaysia, India, Singapore, and Bangladesh. Whereas the human cases in Malaysia were characterized mainly by neurological symptoms and a case fatality rate of ∼40%, cases in Bangladesh also exhibited respiratory disease and had a case fatality rate of ∼70%. Here, we compared the histopathologic changes in the respiratory tract of Syrian hamsters, a well-established small animal disease model for Nipah virus, inoculated oronasally with Nipah virus isolates from human cases in Malaysia and Bangladesh

Inhibin secretion in the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) testis during active and inactive states of spermatogenesis induced by the restriction of photoperiod.

Gonadal function in the male golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) was investigated during exposure to a short photoperiod condition. Within 3 weeks of exposure to the short photoperiod condition, FSH and testosterone in the plasma significantly decreased, and subsequently immunoreactive (ir)-inhibin significantly decreased. Testicular contents of ir-inhibin and testosterone, and pituitary contents of LH and FSH also significantly decreased by 3 weeks with regression of weight of testes, epididymis and seminal vesicles and sperm head count. Circulating LH varied but not significantly. Thereaft

[A serological study concerning the role of the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) in transmitting lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus to humans (author's transl)].

A search for lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM) virus-specific antibody was conducted in 580 persons. One group consisted of 190 14-year-old to 17-year-old girls. In 149 of these hamster contact, either recently or in the more distant past, was certain; three had antibody. In 41 girls hamster contact was doubtful and one was positive. In a second group consisting of 390 persons of either sex and all ages the question as to association with hamsters was answered 123 times in the affirmative. Hamster contact was denied 251 times and uncertain 16 times. In sera from five individuals of this group

Effect of host age in the distribution of adult Trichinella zimbabwensis in the small intestines of golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) and Balb C mice.

Golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) and Balb C mice were experimentally infected with Trichinella zimbabwensis to determine the effect of host age in the distribution of adult stages in the small intestines. The hamsters and mice were divided into two groups of young and old animals. Hamsters aged 90 days were designated as young and those aged 360 days were designated as old while mice of 30 days of age were designated as young and those aged 90 days as old. To recover the adult parasites of T. zimbabwensis, the small intestines of each animal were separated and divided into four equal par

Effect of the photoperiod in modulating the androgenic control of 1-alkyl-2,3-diacylglycerol composition in the harderian gland of the golden hamster, Mesocricetus auratus.

The golden hamster Harderian gland produces a lipid secretion consisting mainly of 1-alkyl-2,3-diacylglycerol. We investigated the composition of alkyl and acyl groups in male and female hamster Harderian alkyldiacylglycerol, in animals kept in long and short photoperiods. Female hamsters in long days have alkyl groups with long saturated straight chains (C18:0 and C20:0) and methyl-branched chains (even and odd chain length iso-branched and odd chain length anteiso-branched chains). Acyl groups in females in long days are mostly long straight chains (C16:0) and methyl-branched chains. In fema

Tissue Distribution of ACE2 Protein in Syrian Golden Hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) and Its Possible Implications in SARS-CoV-2 Related Studies.

The Syrian golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) has recently been demonstrated as a clinically relevant animal model for SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, lack of knowledge about the tissue-specific expression pattern of various proteins in these animals and the unavailability of reagents like antibodies against this species hampers these models' optimal use. The major objective of our current study was to analyze the tissue-specific expression pattern of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, a proven functional receptor for SARS-CoV-2 in different organs of the hamster. Using two different antibodie

Limits to sustained energy intake. XXXII. Hot again: dorsal shaving increases energy intake and milk output in golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus).

Golden hamsters have four times the body size of mice, raise very large litters and are required to produce large quantities of milk during the 18-day lactation period. We have previously proposed that they may be prone to being limited by their heat dissipation capacity. Studies where lactating females are shaved to elevate their heat dissipation capacity have yielded conflicting data so far. With their short pregnancy of ∼18 days, the large litters and the reported high skin temperatures, they may serve as an ideal model to elucidate the role of epilation for energy budgets in lactating mamm

Molecular cloning and characterization of three novel cytochrome P450 2D isoforms, CYP2D20, CYP2D27, and CYP2D28 in the Syrian hamster (Mesocricetus auratus).

We cloned three novel cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2D cDNAs in the Syrian hamster (Mesocricetus auratus). Each clone contained an open reading frame of 1500 nucleotides encoding a protein of 500 amino acids. The deduced amino acid sequences of these had high identities with those of the other CYP2D members, therefore, the clones were assigned as CYP2D20, CYP2D27, and CYP2D28. Northern blot analysis showed that the CYP2D27 mRNA was expressed in liver, but not in kidney, small intestine, and brain, while the CYP2D20 and CYP2D28 mRNAs were not detected in these tissues examined. The expression of CYP2D2

Neuronal projections from the mesencephalic raphe nuclear complex to the suprachiasmatic nucleus and the deep pineal gland of the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus).

Neuronal projections from the mesencephalic raphe system to the suprachiasmatic nucleus and the pineal complex were mapped in this study of the golden hamster, by use of the anterograde tracer Phaseolus vulgaris-leucoagglutinin and the retrograde tracer cholera toxin subunit B. From the median raphe nucleus, a rostral projection ascended in the ventral part of the mesencephalon to continue in the medial forebrain bundle of the forebrain. Nerve fibres from this bundle innervated the ventral and medial parts of the suprachiasmatic nucleus. At the level of the interpeduncular nucleus of the mesen

The hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) as experimental model in Chagas' disease: parasitological and histopathological studies in acute and chronic phases of Trypanosoma cruzi infection.

This research characterizes the acute and chronic phases of Chagas' disease in hamster through parasitological and histopathological studies. The acute phase was achieved with 44 young hamsters injected intraperitoneally with 100,000 blood trypomastigotes of Benedito and Y strains of T. cruzi. The chronic phase was induced in 46 hamsters injected intraperitoneally with 35,000 trypomastigotes of Vicentia, Benedito and Y strains. Animals were sacrificed at regular intervals of 24 hours of acute phase and from the 3rd to the 10th month of infection of chronic phase. In the acute phase, parasites

Altered microRNA expression patterns during the initiation and promotion stages of neonatal diethylstilbestrol-induced dysplasia/neoplasia in the hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) uterus.

Treatment of Syrian hamsters on the day of birth with the prototypical endocrine disruptor and synthetic estrogen, diethylstilbestrol (DES), leads to 100% occurrence of uterine hyperplasia/dysplasia in adulthood, a large proportion of which progress to neoplasia (endometrial adenocarcinoma). Consistent with our prior gene expression analyses at the mRNA and protein levels, we now report (based on microarray, real-time polymerase chain reaction, and in situ hybridization analyses) that progression of the neonatal DES-induced dysplasia/neoplasia phenomenon in the hamster uterus also includes a s

Copious urinary excretion of a male Syrian hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) salivary gland protein after its endocrine-like release upon β-adrenergic stimulation.

Salivary glands, although widely considered as typically exocrine, may also release specific proteins in an endocrine manner. However, endocrine release of salivary gland proteins is not generally acknowledged since the evidences are not easily demonstrable. Submandibular salivary glands (SMG) of male Syrian hamsters express male-specific secretory proteins (MSP; which are lipocalins) visible in SDS-PAGE of SMG extracts, as major bands and also detectable in immunoblots of whole-saliva and urine as low MSP crossreactions. We report here that MSP is localized in acinar cells of SMG and acute tr

Necator americanus: maintenance through one hundred generations in golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus). I. Host sex-associated differences in hookworm burden and fecundity.

The human hookworm Necator americanus was maintained through one hundred generations in the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus). The parasite strain employed here was ultimately adapted to hamsters without the requirement for exogenous steroids or other immunosuppressive agents. Moreover, there was no requirement to use neonatal hamsters--successful infections were obtained in 9- to 10-week-old hamsters infected subcutaneously with 250 hookworm larvae. This unique adaptation of N. americanus to hamsters permits its use for purposes of anthelminthic drug and vaccine development.
