Serial serum determinations of alpha-fetoprotein (alpha FP) as a tumor marker were carried out in the management of six patients with endodermal sinus tumor (EST). Histological examinations in all six patients revealed a typical EST pattern, and in one of them another germ cell tumor, a malignant teratoma, was also found. All patients were treated postoperatively with combination chemotherapy. To evaluate the AFP-concentration postoperatively and/or during chemotherapy treatment, a retrospective study was carried out on 14 patients with a teratoma, endodermal sinus tumor (EST), or hepatoblastoma. Carcinosarcoma of the uterine cervix is a very rare tumour that has been described in less than 70 cases in the literature. It is less common compared with carcinosarcoma of the uterine corpus and it can have two origins: the Müllerian ducts and the mesonephric duct remnants. The use of color Doppler sonography to evaluate the symptomatic testes in children with scrotal pain or swelling was prospectively studied with a fourth-generation color sonographic unit with a 7-MHz linear transducer. Eighteen children with refractory malignant tumors were treated with cis-DDP. They included 10 neuroblastomas, 2 rhabdomyosarcomas, and one each of hepatoblastoma, yolk sac tumor, osteosarcoma and pinealoma. Of 7 cases treated only with cis-DDP, 2 were NC, 6 PD and none were CR or PR. Of 11 cases treated with cis-DDP combined with other agents, 7 were PR, 2 NC, 2 PD and none were CR. Endodermal sinus tumors occur in the gonads and in a variety of extragonadal locations, particularly as the malignant component of sacral teratomas. Light and electron microscopic studies as well as the presence of alpha fetoprotein support the concept that these lesions arise from germ cells that migrate from the extraembryonic yolk sac. A comparison between primary and metastatic germ cell tumours from 38 male patients showed that 19 of 24 metastases with residual differentiated teratoma after adequate therapy came from tumours with teratoma as a component of the primary. The presence of trophoblastic and mesenchymal structures in primary as well as in transplanted rat yolk sac carcinomas (YSC) is described. These structures were only recorded in rat yolk sac carcinomas derived from displaced yolk sac but never in embryo-derived yolk sac carcinomas. It is suggested that the endodermal carcinoma cells displaying either a parietal or a visceral yolk sac pattern as well as the mesenchymal and trophoblastic structures may have a common cell ancestor.

Mesonephric adenocarcinoma is a rare variant of cervical carcinoma with relatively few, well-documented cases reported. We describe the clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical features of 11 examples of this neoplasm, which occurred in women between the ages of 35 and 72 years (mean, 52 years). Wilms' tumor, embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, and yolk sac tumor are the most frequently diagnosed malignant genitourinary tumors in children. The randomized therapeutic trials developed by the National Wilms' Tumor Study (NWTS) committee have produced significant improvements in the survival of Wilms' tumor patients.
