Targeting metalloptosis in tumor therapy: from molecular mechanisms to application of metal nanoparticles.

Metal ions-based regulated cell death (RCD), a form of cell death involving metal ions and controlled by one or more cascade signaling pathways, has recently been termed "metalloptosis". Given the rapid advances in understanding metalloptosis in malignant progression and nanotherapeutics, this review elucidates the latest progress in metalloptosis, focusing on the roles of various metal ions and the targeting of metalloptosis in cancer therapy and nanomedicine. We briefly describe the essential discoveries of RCD and comprehensively summarize the current major regulatory signaling pathways of

Gold nanoparticles/Cu decorated metal-organic frameworks for synergistic photodynamic/ferroptosis cancer therapy.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) holds promise for cancer treatment by generating reactive oxygen species via photosensitizers (PSs) activated by specific wavelengths of light. However, the poor water solubility of PSs and the tumor microenvironment, characterized by high glutathione (GSH) levels and hypoxia, limit its efficacy against hypoxic tumors. To overcome these challenges, we developed a novel nano-reactor, Zr(Cu)-MOF@Au@DHA, to augment PDT-ferroptosis therapy. By incorporating Cu2+into the porphyrin ring of PCN-224 and decorating it with gold nanoparticles, we enhanced the photocatalytic ef

Improved sorption of perfluorooctanoic acid on carbon nanotubes hybridized by metal oxide nanoparticles.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are often used as adsorbent because of their strong adsorption capacity. However, due to the nature of MWCNTs, their ability to adsorb perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a highly hydrophobic pollutant, is low. In this study, MWCNTs were modified by three nano metal oxides (nano iron oxide, copper oxide, and zinc oxide). The pristine (as the control) and modified MWCNTs were characterized by BET-N2, TEM, FTIR, XPS, and XRD, which showed that nano metal oxides were well hybridized on the surface of MWCNTs. Radioactive-labeled PFOA (14C-PFOA) was used to quantif

Comparative study of ligand binding during the postsynthetic stabilization of metal oxide nanoparticles.

In the absence of stabilizers in the reaction medium, the nonaqueous synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles usually results in agglomerated products. Stabilization is however often possible in a postsynthetic treatment, involving the addition of organic ligands that coordinate to the nanoparticle surface. The ligands are commonly expected to chemisorb via functional groups; however, we have recently shown that also weakly and unspecifically interacting ligands can lead to stabilization. Here, we present detailed investigations on the stabilization, comparing the binding of weakly coordinating

Surface engineered magnetic nanoparticles for removal of toxic metal ions and bacterial pathogens.

Surface engineered magnetic nanoparticles (Fe(3)O(4)) were synthesized by facile soft-chemical approaches. XRD and TEM analyses reveal the formation of single-phase Fe(3)O(4) inverse spinel nanostructures. The functionalization of Fe(3)O(4) nanoparticles with carboxyl (succinic acid), amine (ethylenediamine) and thiol (2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid) were evident from FTIR spectra, elemental analysis and zeta-potential measurements. From TEM micrographs, it has been observed that nanoparticles of average sizes about 10 and 6 nm are formed in carboxyl and thiol functionalized Fe(3)O(4), respective

Upgrading of Biomass-Derived Oxygen-Containing Chemicals for Nitrogen-Containing Chemicals: Moving from Nanoparticles to Single Metal Sites and Metal Oxides.

Highly valued N-containing compounds are important and widely applied in the agricultural, pharmaceutical, and material industries. Oxidative or reductive coupling of oxygen-containing chemicals with ammonia or amines is one of the most promising routes to access N-containing compounds. Compared with carbonyl compounds (ketones and aldehydes), starting from alcohols for the synthesis of N-containing compounds is much more challenging. The synthesis of N-containing compounds with alcohols as the raw materials starts with the activation of alcohols via dehydrogenation or oxidation to produce ald

Nitrogen fixation using metallic lithium nanoparticles formed by electrospray deposition.

Multiphase reduction of ambient dinitrogen (N2) was observed during the deposition of charged or uncharged aqueous microdroplets containing a lithium salt pre-catalyst onto conducting or inert surfaces to yield mixed lithium nanoparticles. We propose that this method leverages the high electric fields and partial solvation of ions at the gas-water-solid interface to enhance reaction rates and perform normally moisture-sensitive chemistry in aqueous droplets. Ammonia (NH3) is formed and Li+ is regenerated from the hydrolysis of transient lithium nitride Li3N, constituting a complete catalytic c
