Toxic effects of lead impurities found in aluminum factories.

A study of workers exposed to low levels of lead as impurities in aluminum (as low as 0.07%) shows a statistically significant difference in blood and urine lead levels as compared with a control group. In addition, alterations in precursors of heme were demonstrated as reflected in elevated levels of urinary delta-aminolevulinic acid and erythrocyte protoporphyrin IX. This study has implications for workers who are exposed to metals with low concentrations of lead (less than 1%) since this exposure tends to go unnoticed both by the workers, even when symptoms are present, and by physicians wh

Effects of trace metals on Bombus terrestris (Hymenoptera: Apidae) microcolony and excretion during larval development.

Trace metal pollution is an increasing threat to wildlife, driven by the growing demand for these elements in technologies. Because metals contaminate floral resources, they represent a major but poorly understood risk for bee communities, including social species such as bumble bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae). In particular, the sublethal consequences of metal exposure for bumble bee colony development remain scarcely documented, and the associated metal excretion process occurring at the larva-pupa interface in these holometabolous insects is still unclear. Here, we exposed queenless microcolonie

Two cases of occupational allergic contact dermatitis from a cycloaliphatic epoxy resin in a neat oil: case report.

BACKGROUND: Metal-working fluids contain complex mixtures of chemicals and metal workers constitute a potential risk group for the development of allergic contact dermatitis. CASE PRESENTATION: Two metal workers developed allergic contact dermatitis on the hands and lower arms from exposure to a neat oil used in metal processing. Patch testing revealed that the relevant contact allergen was a cycloaliphatic epoxy resin, 1,2-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid, bis(oxiranylmethyl) ester, added to the oil as a stabilizer. None of the patients had positive reactions to the bisphenol A-based epoxy resin

Biomonitorization of concentrations of 28 elements in serum and urine among workers exposed to indium compounds.

Many studies have documented the abnormal concentrations of metals/metalloids in serum or urine of occupational workers, but no works systematically analysed the concentrations of elements in serum or urine of indium-exposed workers. This study was aimed to assess 28 elements in serum and urine from 57 individuals with occupational exposure to indium and its compounds. Control subjects were 63 workers without metal exposure. We collected information on occupation and lifestyle habits by questionnaire. Biological samples were collected to quantify elements by inductive coupled plasma-mass spect

Health status of workers of a thermal power station exposed for prolonged periods to arsenic and other elements from fuel.

The Nováky Power Station (NPS) has been using since 1953 as fuel coal with a high content of As and with a low content of other metals. This involves a constant risk for the workers as well as pollution of the surroundings. The authors described 16 cases of chronic As intoxication in NPS workers after 22.3 +/- 8.4 years of exposure (especially stokers, maintenance workers, boiler cleaners). Among clinical symptoms prevailed sensory and motor polyneuropathy (13 cases), pseudoneurasthenic syndrome (10 cases), toxic encephalopathy (6 cases) and nasal septum perforation (2 cases). After 1989 the i

Increased mortality from infectious pneumonia after occupational exposure to inorganic dust, metal fumes and chemicals.

OBJECTIVES: There are epidemiological studies indicating that exposure to metal fumes is a risk factor for infectious pneumonia. Whether occupational exposure to other agents, such as inorganic dust or chemicals, also increases the risk for infectious pneumonia is not clear. The aim of the present study was to elucidate whether occupational exposure to respiratory pollutants and irritants increases the risk for infectious pneumonia. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. Setting Swedish male construction workers. Participants 320,143 male construction workers exposed to inorganic dust (asbestos, m

[The cervicobrachial syndrome in women in the metal-working industry].

All metal workers from a metal-working industry (eight women) who operated pressing, cutting and boring machines were found to have cervicobrachial syndrome. Their job involved forced-sitting body posture and repetitive movements. These are particularly important risk factors at the workplace for the occurrence and development of cervicobrachial syndrome. The workers demanded medical assistance at 12 years of work and an average age of 32.1 years. The working chair of poor ergonomic design was established as a major cause of the early occurrence of cervicobrachial syndrome.

Hand dermatitis in the pottery industry.

Irritant hand dermatitis has long been recognized in the pottery industry. In our series, among workers handling glaze, sensitization to chromate was common and allergy to other metals and to biocides also occurred. Allergy to oil additives was found in mould makers. Whilst irritant hand dermatitis does occur, allergy to metals and biocides should be looked for in workers handling glazes, and allergy to oil additives in mould makers.

Beryllium: a modern industrial hazard.

Beryllium exposure can cause a granulomatous lung disease in workers who develop a lymphocyte-mediated sensitization to the metal. Workers in diverse industries are at risk because beryllium's properties are critical to nuclear, aerospace, telecommunications, electronic, metal alloy, biomedical, and semiconductor industries. The occupational air concentration standard's failure to protect beryllium workers is driving many scientific and occupational health advances. These developments include study of bioavailability of different physicochemical forms of beryllium, medical surveillance to show

Welder's Anthrax: A Tale of 2 Cases.

Bacillus anthracis has traditionally been considered the etiologic agent of anthrax. However, anthrax-like illness has been documented in welders and other metal workers infected with Bacillus cereus group spp. harboring pXO1 virulence genes that produce anthrax toxins. We present 2 recent cases of severe pneumonia in welders with B. cereus group infections and discuss potential risk factors for infection and treatment options, including antitoxin.

Biomonitoring of exposure to multiple metal components in urine, hair and nails of apprentice welders performing shielded metal arc welding (SMAW).

Welding fumes are associated with various diseases. Increased air levels of metals were reported during welding. However, few multielement biomonitoring studies were conducted to assess the actual dose of metal components absorbed in apprentice welders in a learning environment. This research aimed to establish the nature and level of exposure to welding fumes and their metallic components in apprentice welders performing 'Shielded Metal Arc Welding' (SMAW), based on multi-element and multi-matrix analyses. A total of 86 apprentice welders were recruited in three different schools in Montreal,

Fertility of male workers of the italian mint.

Fertility among workers exposed to metal fumes and solvents in the Italian mint (stampers, founders, and other technical workers) was compared to the reproductive experience of the administrative staff. Data on the reproductive history and time to pregnancy were collected by interview. For workers with children, data on the time to pregnancy (TTP) for the first pregnancy was assessed in relation to occupational risk factors. The groups with the highest prevalence of pregnancy delay beyond 6 months were stampers (21%) and those exposed to solvents (21.5%). Logistic regression did not show a sig

Metal toxicity and the respiratory tract.

The type of lung disease caused by metal compounds depends on the nature of the offending agent, its physicochemical form, the dose, exposure conditions and host factors. The fumes or gaseous forms of several metals, e.g. cadmium (Cd), manganese (Mn), mercury (Hg), nickel carbonyl (Nl(CO)4, zinc chloride (ZnCl2), vanadium pentoxide (V2O5), may lead to acute chemical pneumonitis and pulmonary oedema or to acute tracheobronchitis. Metal fume fever, which may follow the inhalation of metal fumes e.g. zinc (Zn), copper (Cu) and many others, is a poorly understood influenza-like reaction, accompani
