Hydrothermal carbonisation of peat-based spent sorbents loaded with metal(loid)s.

Hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC) is a wet and relatively low-temperature process where, under autogenous pressures, biomass undergoes a chain of reactions leading to the defragmentation of organic matter. As well as its other uses (e.g. for producing low-cost carbon-based nano-compounds), HTC is utilised for the treatment of wet wastes, such as manure and biosludge. This study aimed to determine if hydrothermal carbonisation is a feasible treatment method for spent sorbents that are highly enriched with arsenic, chromium, copper, and zinc. The chemical properties of hydrochar and process liqui

Probing the bioinorganic chemistry of toxic metals in the mammalian bloodstream to advance human health.

The etiology of numerous grievous human diseases, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease is not well understood. Conversely, the concentration toxic metals and metalloids, such as As, Cd, Hg and Pb in human blood of the average population is well established, yet we know strikingly little about the role that they might play in the etiology of disease processes. Establishing functional connections between the chronic exposure of humans to these and other inorganic pollutants and the etiology of certain human diseases is therefore viewed by many as one of the greatest challenges in the po

Transgenic Indian mustard (Brassica juncea) plants expressing an Arabidopsis phytochelatin synthase (AtPCS1) exhibit enhanced As and Cd tolerance.

Phytochelatins (PCs) are post-translationally synthesized thiol reactive peptides that play important roles in detoxification of heavy metal and metalloids in plants and other living organisms. The overall goal of this study is to develop transgenic plants with increased tolerance for and accumulation of heavy metals and metalloids from soil by expressing an Arabidopsis thaliana AtPCS1 gene, encoding phytochelatin synthase (PCS), in Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L.). A FLAG-tagged AtPCS1 gDNA, under its native promoter, is expressed in Indian mustard, and transgenic pcs lines have been compa

Metals and breast cancer.

Metalloestrogens are metals that activate the estrogen receptor in the absence of estradiol. The metalloestrogens fall into two subclasses: metal/metalloid anions and bivalent cationic metals. The metal/metalloid anions include compounds such as arsenite, nitrite, selenite, and vanadate while the bivalent cations include metals such as cadmium, calcium, cobalt, copper, nickel, chromium, lead, mercury, and tin. The best studied metalloestrogen is cadmium. It is a heavy metal and a prevalent environmental contaminant with no known physiological function. This review addresses our current underst

Potential of asphalt concrete as a source of trace metals.

Asphalt concrete is one of the most important building materials in the modern world, but the leaching potential of metals from this composite material to the environment is poorly understood. In this study, metals leaching from four hot-mix asphalt samples were analyzed: two fresh samples of low-traffic and high-traffic composition and their weathered equivalents collected from roads in the city of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. A sequential extraction, based on the Community Bureau of Reference method, was applied to study the speciation and potential mobility of metals and metalloids in those s

Serum copper profile in patients with type 1 diabetes in comparison to other metals.

BACKGROUND: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a chronic condition in which the pancreas loses the ability to produce insulin due to an autoimmune destruction of the insulin producing beta cells in the pancreatic islets of Langerhans. Pathophysiological complications related to diabetes include micro and macrovascular disease, nephropathy, and neuropathy that can also be affected by environmental factors such as lifestyle and diet. OBJECTIVES: The current study aimed to evaluate the serum levels of total copper, the copper-carrying protein, ceruloplasmin and nonceruloplasmin bound copper (nonceruloplas

DUOX expression in human keratinocytes and bronchial epithelial cells: Influence of vanadate.

Dual oxygenases (DUOX) 1 and 2, expressed in many animal tissues, participate in host defense at mucosal surfaces and may have important signaling roles through generation of reactive oxygen. Present work addresses their expression in cultured human epidermal keratinocytes and effects of cytokines and metal/metalloid compounds. Both DUOX1 and 2 were expressed at much higher levels after confluence than in the preconfluent state. Maximal DUOX1 mRNA levels were 50 fold those of DUOX2. DUOX1 and 2 were induced ≈3 fold by interleukin 4, but only DUOX1 was induced by interferon gamma (IFNγ). In hum

Carcinogenicity of some metals evaluated by the IARC Monographs: A synopsis of the evaluations of arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, and antimony.

Metals represent a major area of concern due to their extensive industrial applications, environmental persistence, and well-documented adverse health effects. Notably, metals (and metalloids) such as arsenic, cadmium, beryllium, chromium, cobalt, lead, and nickel are known for their toxicity and carcinogenic potential, raising significant public health concerns. Human exposure to these metals occurs through different routes, posing both environmental and workplace hazards. The Monographs programme of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) plays a critical role in identifying c

Airborne metals and malignant pleural effusions: the role of oxidative stress.

An excess of pleural fluid production can result in a condition known as pleural effusion, characterized by the accumulation of fluid in the space between the lungs and the chest wall. Malignant pleural effusions are defined as the presence of neoplastic cells in pleural fluid. The presence of malignant pleural effusions has been attributed to lung cancer, which is present in 15% of patients at the time of diagnosis. The development of pleural effusion has been strongly linked to environmental factors, including exposure to air pollution, chemical compounds, and occupational hazards. The prese

Facile synthesis of electrocatalytically active bismuth oxide nanosheets for detection of palladium traces in pharmaceutical wastewater.

Current synthesis routes of bismuth oxide nanosheets (BiONS) are relatively complicated, requiring the use of halogens or metalloids. Herein, a facile method to synthesize BiONS without the addition of halogens or other metalloids was developed. The synthesized BiONS were identified to have flake-shaped structures (300-1000 nm in width) with the thickness of 6-10 nm, which were predominantly made of β-Bi2O3. Such BiONS were applied to modify the surface of screen-printed carbon electrodes (BiONS-SPCEs) for the development of a robust palladium (Pd2+) sensor. After optimizing the electrochemica

Roles of organometal(loid) compounds in environmental cycles.

Organo compounds form an integral part of the environmental cycles of metals and metalloids. For phosphorus, selenium, and (possibly) arsenic, they are biochemical necessities. For others, they create enhanced mobility and altered biological effects. Investigations in this area grew out of human introduction of these compounds or their precursors into the natural environment.

Meta-analysis of heavy metal effects on soil enzyme activities.

Enzyme activities (EAs) respond to contamination in several ways depending on the chemical form and content of heavy metals and metalloids (HMs) and their interactions with various soil properties. A systematic and mechanistic understanding of EA responses to HM contamination in soil is necessary for predicting the consequences for nutrient availability and the cycling of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and sulphur (S). In this study, a meta-analysis based on 671 observations found the activities of seven enzymes to decrease in response to soil contamination with Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu and As

Halides of the Heavier Group 14 Homologues Germanium, Tin, and Lead-A Journey through Unusual Compounds and Oxidation States.

Classical halides of the heavier Group 14 homologues germanium, tin, and lead are common precursors for the synthesis of exciting compounds, such as polyhedral clusters. To get access to larger metalloid cluster compounds of Group 14, the disproportionation reaction of metastable monohalide solutions, accessible through a preparative co-condensation reaction, proved to be quite successful. As the identity of the subvalent halides within the metastable solutions were yet unknown the reaction course from a monohalide precursor to a metalloid cluster was mostly unidentified. This might change now

A case-control study of the risk of cutaneous melanoma associated with three selenium exposure indicators.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: A direct association between exposure to the metalloid selenium and risk of cutaneous melanoma has been suggested by some observational and experimental cohort studies, whereas other studies have yielded inconsistent results. Since some of the inconsistencies may be due to exposure misclassification arising from the use of exposure indicators that do not adequately reflect body tissue selenium content or the levels of the biologically relevant species of this metalloid, we examined this issue using multiple indicators of exposure. METHODS: We analyzed the relation of sele

Arsenic and other metals as phenotype driving electrophiles in carcinogenesis.

There are several sources of heavy metal exposures whether occupational or environmental. These are connected both with the existence of natural reservoirs of metal toxicants or human activity such as mining, welding and construction. In general, exposure to heavy metals, such as cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb) and metalloids, such as arsenic (As), has been associated with diseases including neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes and cancer. Common to these diseases is the loss of cellular physiologic performance and phenotype required for proper function. On the metal side, e

An arsenic metallochaperone for an arsenic detoxification pump.

Environmental arsenic is a world-wide health issue, making it imperative for us to understand mechanisms of metalloid uptake and detoxification. The predominant intracellular form is the highly mephitic arsenite, which is detoxified by removal from cytosol. What prevents arsenite toxicity as it diffuses through cytosol to efflux systems? Although intracellular copper is regulated by metallochaperones, no chaperones involved in conferring resistance to other metals have been identified. In this article, we report identification of an arsenic chaperone, ArsD, encoded by the arsRDABC operon of Es
