Rare-earth-platinum alloy nanoparticles in mesoporous zeolite for catalysis.

Platinum is a much used catalyst that, in petrochemical processes, is often alloyed with other metals to improve catalytic activity, selectivity and longevity1-5. Such catalysts are usually prepared in the form of metallic nanoparticles supported on porous solids, and their production involves reducing metal precursor compounds under a H2 flow at high temperatures6. The method works well when using easily reducible late transition metals, but Pt alloy formation with rare-earth elements through the H2 reduction route is almost impossible owing to the low chemical potential of rare-earth element

Anthropogenic gadolinium contamination in tap water across the Paris megacity: Rare earth elements trace sources and mixing.

Gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) used in medical imaging have become emerging contaminants in surface water and groundwater worldwide, raising concerns regarding their presence in drinking water. We report here on the distribution of rare earth elements and yttrium (REY) in tap water across the Paris megacity (12 million inhabitants), the largest and most complex urban drinking water systems in Europe. Anthropogenic gadolinium (Gd) was detected in nearly all tap water samples collected between December 2025 and January 2026, with concentrations ranging from 0 to 44 ng/kg, and typical w

Effective extraction and recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) in contaminated soils using a reusable biosurfactant.

Tea saponin (TS), a plant derived biosurfactant, was used to investigate on its effectiveness on the extraction of three typically selected rare earth elements (REEs, light lanthanum (La), medium arrowhead (Dy) and heavy erbium (Er)) from contaminated soils, in the presence of important toxic heavy metals (lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd)). A complete procedure, involving the extraction of REEs in soils, the recovery of REEs and TS in the extraction leachates and the reuse of the recovered TS, was established. Experimental results showed that the optimal extraction parameters were consumption of 1.2

Evaluation of DNA damage in a population of bats (Chiroptera) residing in an abandoned monazite mine.

Ionising radiation has the ability to induce DNA damage. While the effects of high doses of radiation of short duration have been well documented, the biological effects of long-term exposure to low doses are poorly understood. This study evaluated the clastogenic effects of low dose ionising radiation on a population of bats (Chiroptera) residing in an abandoned monazite mine. Bats were sampled from two chambers in the mine, where external radiation levels measured around 20 microSv/h (low dose) and 100 microSv/h (higher dose), respectively. A control group of bats was sampled from a cave wit

Rare earth element (La, Ce, Y, Sc, and Gd) removal, biomass accumulation, and phyto-ash enrichment in floating treatment wetlands planted with Juncus inflexus.

Anthropogenic use of rare earth elements (REEs) in modern technologies has increased their occurrence in wastewater streams and aquatic environments. This study evaluated floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) planted with Juncus inflexus for removal, biomass accumulation, and phyto-ash enrichment of selected REEs (La, Ce, Y, Sc, Gd) from synthetic high-strength wastewater. Three REE systems were tested: MIX1 (La + Ce), MIX2 (Y + Sc), and MIX3 (Gd), at 1-20 mg L-1 per element. Removal efficiency, plant responses, uptake kinetics, mass distribution, short-term remobilization, and phyto-ash enrichme

Rare earth orthovanadate (REM-VO4; REM = Pr, Gd, and Sm)-based sensors for selective and simultaneous detection of furazolidone and metronidazole.

Antibiotics are vital tools in the fight against bacterial infections, with furazolidone (FD) and metronidazole (MD) being widely used to target pathogens like G. lamblia and H. pylori. However, overuse of these antibiotics can lead to serious health complications, highlighting the urgent need for accurate, real-time detection of these drugs at precise levels. In this study, we explore the use of differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) for detecting FD and MD with high sensitivity, employing a dual detection method. To enhance detection, we developed a sensor using rare earth metal-based orthovan

[Luminescence properties of rare earth complexes Tb(BSA)4].

A new rare earth complex Tb(BSA)4 was synthesized and studied. Pure green and narrow band emission was generated from the device with structure ITO/PVK:Tb(BSA)4 /Alq3 /LiF/Al, where PVK was used to improve the film-formation and hole-transport property of the Tb(BSA)4. The absorption mechanism, and the photoluminescence and electroluminescence mechanisms are discussed. It has been proved that there exists energy transfer from PVK to Tb(BSA)4 and the mechanisms of photoluminescence and electroluminescence are different. The effect of different ratios of PVK on the device characteristics is also

[Arthroscopic shoulder stabilization. Differentiated treatment strategy with Suretac, Fastak, Holmium: YAG-laser and electrosurgery].

The goal for arthroscopic stabilization of anterior glenohumeral instability is to achieve an outcome equivalent to or better than open procedures. A number of arthroscopic procedures have been advocated to reestablish continuity of the inferior glenohumeral ligament complex (IGHLC) with the glenoid. Implantable suture anchors were developed to avoid the problems associated with arthroscopic staple capsulorrhaphy like iatrogenic injury of the glenoid or humeral surface, loosening and migration of the staple. Several transosseous techniques include the need for an accessory posterior incision,

Can Metal Promotion of SAPO-34 Genuinely Improve Its Catalytic Performance in Methanol Conversion to Light Olefins Reaction?

To genuinely assess the effect of secondary metal promotion on improving the SAPO-34 catalytic performance in MTO reaction, a broad spectrum of metals from different groups of the periodic table (alkali and alkaline earth metals, transition metals, rare earth metals, and basic metals) were investigated. Metals were added through a direct incorporation route with Me/Al2O3 molar ratio of 0.05. Some metals seamlessly incorporated into the SAPO-34 framework and replaced the Si and Al atoms, while others partially merged or even failed to be combined with SAPO and emerged as amorphous phases. Altho

Surface-Modified In2O3 for High-Throughput Screening of Volatile Gas Sensors in Diesel and Gasoline.

In this paper, with the help of the method of composite materials science, parallel synthesis and high-throughput screening were used to prepare gas sensors with different molar ratios of rare earths and precious metals modified In2O3, which could be used to monitor and warn the early leakage of gasoline and diesel. Through high-throughput screening, it is found that the effect of rare earth metal modification on gas sensitivity improvement is better than other metals, especially 0.5 mol% Gd modified In2O3 (Gd0.5In) gas sensor has a high response to 100 ppm gasoline (Ra/Rg = 6.1) and diesel (R

Fractionation and Distribution of Rare Earth Elements in Marine Sediment and Bioavailability in Avicennia marina in Central Red Sea Mangrove Ecosystems.

Rare earth element fractionation and distribution in the coastal ecosystem have been of significant concern and are recognized worldwide as emerging micro-pollutants. However, unlike other metals such as trace elements, little is known about their uptake by aquatic plants such as the mangrove Avicennia marina, especially in the central Red Sea. We investigated the fractionation of rare earth elements in six mangrove ecosystems in the central Red Sea and bioavailability in mangrove A. marina. The concentrations of rare earth elements, sediment grain sizes, multi-elemental ratios, geo-accumulati

Determination of ultra-trace rare earth elements in urine samples by photo-Fenton-coprecipitation-plasma mass spectrometry.

The monitoring of trace elements in urine has emerged as an important tool for health risk assessments. However, direct detecting urine samples by ICP-MS is a great challenge as the complex organic content of urine (e.g., uric acid and other organic acids, urea, creatinine) and mineral components present in urine. A separation and preconcentration procedure, using photo-Fenton process and iron hydroxide coprecipitation, was developed for analysis of rare earth elements (REEs) in urine samples. The organic components in urine samples were mineralized by photo-Fenton process, avoiding their inhi

Removal of copper and iron from ethanolic solutions by an anion exchange resin and its implication to rare-earth magnet recycling.

In the recycling of end-of-life rare-earth magnets, the recovery of non-rare earth constituents is often neglected. In the present study, strong cation and anion exchange resins were tested batchwise for the recovery of the non-rare-earth constituents of permanent magnets (copper, cobalt, manganese, nickel and iron) from synthetic aqueous and ethanolic solutions. The cation exchange resin recovered most of metal ions from aqueous and ethanolic feeds, whereas the anion exchange resin could selectively recover copper and iron from ethanolic feeds. The highest uptake of iron and copper was found

Primordial radionuclides and rare earth elements in the sediments of Sundarban mangrove estuary (Bangladesh): sources and risk assessment.

This study evaluates sediments from the mangrove estuary to examine the premise that geogenic and fluvial dynamics act as the dominant controls on elemental (primordial radionuclides and REEs) partitioning, with secondary regulation by the trivial influence of anthropogenic activities. A total of 31 benthic sediments were collected across the upstream to downstream transect and analysed using ICP-MS. Activity concentrations (Bq kg-1) of 40K, 226Ra, and 232Th were calculated based on elemental abundance of Th, U, and K, respectively, and multivariate statistical approaches were applied to ident

Microbial community succession in response to in-situ coordinated leaching of ion-adsorption rare earth ores.

The stable supply of medium and heavy rare earth elements (M-HREEs) is vital for sustainable development in strategic sectors including permanent magnets, phosphors, and metallurgy. Southern China's ion-adsorption rare earth deposits represent the world's primary M-HREE source. However, the dominant extraction technique, which employs in-situ leaching with ammonium sulfate via an ion-exchange mechanism, has caused severe ammonia-nitrogen pollution in mining regions. To overcome this environmental challenge, our team developed an innovative non-contact bioleaching process based on coordination-

Metatranscriptomic analysis of lanthanum driven multi-element metabolic regulation in a rare earth tolerant microbial consortium.

The biological functions of rare earth elements (REEs) are gaining increasing attention, however, their systematic regulatory mechanisms regarding the metabolism and biogeochemical cycling of complex soil microbial communities remain unclear. In this study, a highly tolerant and stable microbial consortium (La-T18) was enriched and acclimated from REE-contaminated soil. Combining physiological assays and metatranscriptomics, we systematically analyzed the growth, metabolism, and gene expression responses of this consortium under varying concentrations of lanthanum (La) treatments. The results

Rare earth elements and yttrium in Polish rivers and the input of anthropogenic gadolinium into the Baltic Sea.

Due to their use in enabling technologies, rare earth elements and yttrium (REY) have become environmental contaminants, and anthropogenic Gd from Gd-based contrast agents (GBCAs) used in medical diagnostics has become a worldwide concern. Contamination of coastal seawater with GBCAs has previously been documented for the North Sea and the outflow of the Baltic Sea. However, the source(s) of this anthropogenic Gd in the Baltic Sea are not yet known. Hence, we investigated the REY distribution in the Polish rivers Oder and Vistula (and some of their tributaries), which are by discharge the sixt

Enhanced SO2 resistance of the Pd/Silicate-1 catalyst by rare earth oxide modification in methane combustion.

The inherent irreducibility and limited sulfur dioxide tolerance of zeolites constrain oxygen exchange efficiency in palladium/zeolite catalysts, which can adversely affect their performance in methane combustion. Herein, a novel molecular sieve (Silicate-1, denoted as S-1) catalyst functionalized with rare earth oxide sites was developed for catalytic methane combustion. Although both Pd/S-1@CeO2-30 (in which CeO2 content was 30 wt.%) and Pd/S-1 catalysts demonstrated comparable initial catalytic activities, the Pd/S-1@CeO2-30 sample achieved a methane reaction rate of 114.0 µmol/(gPd·s) and
