Bullfrog tadpoles ventilate both the buccal cavity and lung. In isolated brainstems, the midbrain/pons influences CO2 responsiveness and timing of lung ventilatory bursting, depending on larval development. However, little is known about midbrain/pons influences on buccal burst patterns. As such, we investigated how removal of this region affects buccal burst shape and CO2 responsiveness across development. We measured facial nerve activity in brainstems isolated from tadpoles during early and late developmental stages, under normal and elevated levels of CO2. Brainstems were either left intac

Flatfish metamorphosis is a unique post-embryonic developmental event in which thyroid hormones (THs) drive the development of symmetric pelagic larva into asymmetric benthic juveniles. One of the eyes migrates to join the other eye on the opposite side of the head. Developmental mechanisms at the basis of the acquisition of flatfish anatomical asymmetry remain an open question. Here we demonstrate that an TH responsive asymmetric centre, determined by deiodinase 2 expression, ventrally juxtaposed to the migrating eye in sole (Solea senegalensis) correlates with asymmetric cranial ossification

Turbot specimens were kept at three temperatures (T s ): warm (W) (21-22 °C), ambient (A) (17-18 °C) and cold (C) (13-14 °C) during the larval and early postlarval stages. At 90 days posthatching (dph), all of them were transferred to ambient T until 190 dph. At 2-3 dph, the specimens showed a monolayer of red muscle and immature white fibres; external or dermomyotome cells (presumptive myogenic cells) were observed on the surface of the red muscle. In the following stages, many myogenic cells and presumptive myogenic precursors were observed within the myotome, presumably derived of the dermo

Craniofacial remodeling during flatfish metamorphosis, including eye migration, is perhaps the most striking example of asymmetric postembryonic development in the vertebrate world. The asymmetry of the cranium mainly results from distortion of the frontal bones, which depends on eye migration during metamorphosis. However, it is unclear how the up-migrating eye causes distortion of the frontal bones. In this study, we first show that distortion of the frontal bones during metamorphosis in Paralichthys olivaceus is the result of cell apoptosis, rather than cell autophagy or cell proliferation.

The effect of high dietary levels of arachidonic acid (ARA) on the eye migration and cranial bone remodelling processes in Senegalese sole Solea senegalensis early juveniles (age: 50 days post hatch) was evaluated by means of geometric morphometric analysis and alizarin red staining of cranial skeletal elements. The incidence of normally pigmented fish fed the control diet was 99·1 ± 0·3% (mean ± s.e.), whereas it was only 18·7 ± 7·5% for those fed high levels of ARA (ARA-H). The frequency of cranial deformities was significantly higher in fish fed ARA-H (95·1 ± 1·5%) than in those fed the con

Ghrelin is a pituitary growth hormone (GH)-secretagogue that also has metabolic, reproductive, proliferative, immunological and brain functions in mammals. Far less is known about its role in fish. We have therefore performed an immunohistochemical determination of its tissue distribution in the developing Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) to gain insights into its potential function. Ghrelin immunoreactivity was detected in first-feeding halibut larvae in the skin, urinary bladder, gastrointestinal (GI) tract and olfactory lobe of the brain. In subsequent stages up to metamorphosis

The feeding biomechanics of premetamorphic, metamorphic, and postmetamorphic southern flounder, Paralichthys lethostigma, were investigated to better understand the origin and design of adult pleuronectiform feeding mechanisms. Larval P. lethostigma were sampled from culture tanks every day from first feeding through metamorphosis. Fish were then fixed, cleared, and double stained for cartilage and bone. Postmetamorphic juvenile and adult fish were obtained from aquaculture facilities, fixed, and the muscles and bones of the head dissected. All fish were digitally photographed from both sides

Quantitative and morphological data were obtained on developing olfactory axons in the African clawed frog, Xenopus laevis, during late premetamorphosis (stages 48-54), prometamorphosis (stages 55-57), and halfway through metamorphic climax (stages 58-62). Larval axons throughout these stages of development did not change with respect to morphology or diameter and were similar in all respects to olfactory axons described in other vertebrate species. The number of axons in the olfactory nerve increased throughout development, more rapidly after stage 54. Based on comparisons of the number of ax

The three-dimensional structure of the bile ducts and their relationship to the blood vessels were studied in the larval lamprey by scanning electron microscopy of the intact tissue and of biliary and vascular casts. The intrahepatic gall bladder is situated in the cephalic portion of the liver and a cystic duct is connected to a straight intrahepatic common bile duct, which extends to the extrahepatic bile duct at the caudal end of the liver. Several smaller intrahepatic common bile ducts are connected directly to the intrahepatic common bile duct, are convoluted or serpiginous and are surrou

Although previous workers had found no evidence of resistance to superinfection in vectors of filariasis, it was considered desirable to reinvestigate the subject because of the epidemiological implications, since a mosquito that can incubate to maturity successive broods of filarial larvae will obviously be a more efficient vector than one that cannot. The results obtained indicate that a Culex pipiens fatigans mosquito that picks up an infection early in its life can, by taking subsequent infecting feeds, remain infective for the rest of its life. The movement of mature larvae in the vector a

BACKGROUND: After completion of embryogenesis, many organisms experience an additional obligatory developmental transition to attain a substantially different juvenile or adult form. During anuran metamorphosis, the aquatic tadpole undergoes drastic morphological changes and remodelling of tissues and organs to become a froglet. Thyroid hormones are required to initiate the process, but the mechanism whereby the many requisite changes are coordinated between organs and tissues is poorly understood. Metabolites are often highly conserved biomolecules between species and are the closest reflecti

The amphibian metamorphosis assay (AMA) is an in vivo screen to assess potential interactions of chemicals with the amphibian thyroid system. Tadpoles are exposed for 21-days, then assessed for development and growth after 7 days and at test termination. This paper presents data from studies performed to satisfy test orders from the US EPA's Endocrine Disruptor Screening Program. Data Evaluation Records were used to collate the control variability and performance of biological endpoints in AMAs conducted in different laboratories, then supplemented with recent studies. We examine the statistic

BACKGROUND: Cases of parallel evolution offer the possibility to identify adaptive traits and to uncover developmental constraints on the evolutionary trajectories of these traits. The independent evolution of direct development from the ancestral biphasic life history in frogs is such a case of parallel evolution. In frogs, aquatic larvae (tadpoles) differ profoundly from their adult forms and exhibit a stunning diversity regarding their habitats, morphology and feeding behaviors. The transition from the tadpole to the adult is a climactic, thyroid hormone (TH)-dependent process of profound a

Larval deformities have been observed in chironomids, and are thought to be associated with aquatic contaminant exposure. However, in laboratory assays, deformities have not been linked with contaminants in the absence of potential confounding variables including mortality, which introduces a survivorship bias. There is also a paucity of data on noncontaminant causes. In addition, power analyses are rarely undertaken, meaning that effect sizes detectable are usually uncertain. We therefore aimed to clarify factors associated with deformities, by running survivorship bias-free (i.e., sublethal)

BACKGROUND: This paper analyzes the mechanism of the proliferation and disappearance of graphical characters in the manga Dragon Ball, a globally successful media franchise. Dragon Ball was serialized by Japanese manga artist, Toriyama Akira (1955-2024), in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine between 1984 and 1995. The manga, published in 42 volumes, was animated for TV from 1986 to 1996 as Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z.
METHODS: In support of the arguments on animation, such as Susan Napier's metamorphosis, Sergei Eisenstein's plasmaticity, and theories on characters in anime and manga studies, this

The intestinal remodeling during amphibian metamorphosis is essential for adapting to various ecological niches of aquatic and terrestrial habitats. However, whether and how the widespread contaminant, perfluorobutanesulfonate (PFBS) affects intestinal remodeling remains unknown. In this study, tadpoles (Lithobates catesbeianus) at the G26 stage were exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of PFBS (0, 1, 3, and 10 μg/L) until the end of metamorphosis. PFBS exposure resulted in reduced thyroid follicular glia; down-regulation of gene transcripts related to thyroid hormone synthesis;

Measurement of adrenal hormones in amphibians is important in studies on stress, development, osmoregulation, endocrine disruption, and conservation to help reveal mechanisms within amphibians and evolution among vertebrates. Corticosteroids measured in frogs are typically corticosterone and/or aldosterone, but steroid intermediates that may activate hormone receptors are thus far not quantified. Also, steroidogenesis in frogs has been examined in vitro but little work has been done using tadpoles with mutations affecting steroidogenesis. To advance such studies, we developed a comprehensive l

17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) is a synthetic estrogen widely used in combined oral contraceptives (COCs) for years. Estetrol (E4), a natural estrogen synthesized by the fetal liver during pregnancy, is the estrogenic component of a new COC. While E4 is thought to have a limited environmental impact in comparison to EE2, its effects on non-reproductive functions in aquatic species remain underexplored. This study compared the impact of EE2 and E4 on the metamorphosis of zebrafish (Danio rerio), a vital life cycle process. Larvae were exposed to concentrations ranging from 10 to 10,000 times the me

Tail resorption during amphibian metamorphosis is one of the most dramatic processes that is obligatorily dependent on thyroid hormone (TH). Heavy metals could result in thyroid gland damages and disturb TH homeostasis. Lead (Pb) and copper (Cu) often co-exist in natural aquatic ecosystems. However, there is still little information on how tail resorption responds to alone or combined exposure to Pb and Cu. Our study investigated the effects of Pb and Cu alone or combined exposure on the morphological parameters of the tail, histological changes of thyroid gland and tail, and gene expression p

The ways in which animals sense the world changes throughout development. For example, young of many species have limited visual capabilities, but still make social decisions, likely based on information gathered through other sensory modalities. Poison frog tadpoles display complex social behaviors that have been suggested to rely on vision despite a century of research indicating tadpoles have poorly-developed visual systems relative to adults. Alternatively, other sensory modalities, such as the lateral line system, are functional at hatching in frogs and may guide social decisions while ot
