Clinical Outcomes and Molecular Epidemiology of Human Metapneumovirus in Romanian Hospitalized Patients.

Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is an important cause of acute respiratory tract infections. This study aimed to describe the clinical characteristics, outcomes, and molecular features of hMPV infection among hospitalized patients in Romania. We performed an analysis of prospectively collected surveillance data from patients hospitalized with influenza-like illness or severe acute respiratory infection and tested by RT-PCR for the presence of respiratory viruses between November 2023 and May 2025. Only cases of hMPV monoinfection were analyzed. Clinical, laboratory, and outcome data were analyzed

Development and immunogenicity of a novel subunit vaccine candidate against avian metapneumovirus.

OBJECTIVES: aMPV subtype B remains one of the major respiratory pathogens affecting commercial poultry worldwide despite the widespread implementation of vaccination programs. In the present study, epidemiological surveillance, virus isolation, and immunogenic evaluation of a newly developed subunit vaccine against aMPV subtype B were conducted. METHODS: Clinical samples, representing 115 chicken flocks from 16 commercial poultry farms located in three regions of Kazakhstan, were screened for aMPV subtype B using multiplex real-time RT-PCR. Approximately 20% of the samples collected during th

Human metapneumovirus: an emerging public health threat and harbinger of a new pandemic.

Human metapneumovirus (hMPV), first identified in 2001, has increasingly been recognized as a significant cause of acute respiratory tract infections worldwide. Although often overshadowed by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and influenza, hMPV contributes substantially to the global burden of respiratory disease, particularly among young children, older adults, and immunocompromised populations. The COVID-19 pandemic further altered the epidemiology of respiratory viruses, disrupting established seasonal patterns and creating immunity gaps that have fueled unusual hMPV outbreaks in recent ye

Trends of Human Metapneumovirus Outbreaks in Bangladesh: Probable Risks and Preventive Strategies.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is one of the major pathogens associated with respiratory tract infection and is a rising concern for people with compromised immunity worldwide. Amid the global concern about the increased incidence of hMPV, we found a significant lack of studies on the epidemiology of this virus in Bangladesh. METHODS: In this study, we integrated the previous reports of hMPV in Bangladesh and characterized the cases. RESULTS: We found that hMPV has been continuously circulating since 2000 among the residents of Bangladesh. The prevalence varied from 3.9% t

Viral Cytopathic Changes in Sputum Cytology in a Patient with Known Human Metapneumovirus.

INTRODUCTION: Viral cytopathic changes seen in sputum cytology have been described in association with infection by viruses such as cytomegalovirus (CMV), herpes simplex virus (HSV), adenovirus, and even measles. However, viral cytopathic changes due to human metapneumovirus (hMPV) have not yet been well described in cytology. hMPV is a relatively new entity, discovered in 2001. It is known to cause upper and lower respiratory tract infections in children, the elderly, and immunocompromised patients. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the viral cytopathic changes seen in sputum in a 63-year-old m

Human Metapneumovirus Associated With Acute Hemorrhagic Oedema of Infancy: A Case Report.

Acute Haemorrhagic Oedema of Infancy (AHOI), also known as Acute Hemorrhagic Edema of Infancy (AHEI), is characterized by purpuric skin lesions, edema, and fever. It is classified as a form of cutaneous leukocytoclastic vasculitis. Clinically, AHOI presents with targetoid, purplish spots on the face and limbs, accompanied by the sudden onset of peripheral edema. AHOI is often associated with infections, including rotavirus, cytomegalovirus (CMV), and pneumococcal bacteremia. In this case, an eight-year-old male infant presented to the emergency room with fever, cough, and a newly developed, no

Burden of Human Metapneumovirus and Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infections in Asthmatic Children.

BACKGROUND: Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are the leading causes of acute respiratory illness in children. Clinical burden of each infection on the respiratory distress in asthmatic patients remains unclear. The purpose of the study was to clarify the effect of these infections on the severity of asthmatic children in the seasonal outbreaks. METHODS: A total of 1,217 pediatric inpatients with hMPV (n = 114) or RSV (n = 1,103) infection in Yamaguchi prefecture, Japan, between 2011 and 2014 were enrolled. Bronchial asthma was defined as having more than 3 ep

The human metapneumovirus matrix protein stimulates the inflammatory immune response in vitro.

Each year, during winter months, human Metapneumovirus (hMPV) is associated with epidemics of bronchiolitis resulting in the hospitalization of many infants. Bronchiolitis is an acute illness of the lower respiratory tract with a consequent inflammation of the bronchioles. The rapid onset of inflammation suggests the innate immune response may have a role to play in the pathogenesis of this hMPV infection. Since, the matrix protein is one of the most abundant proteins in the Paramyxoviridae family virion, we hypothesized that the inflammatory modulation observed in hMPV infected patients may b

Human metapneumovirus pneumonia in children: results of an Italian study and mini-review.

Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a newly identified paramyxovirus causing lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI). Current knowledge on hMPV is mainly based on retrospective studies performed in stored respiratory and serum samples. We found 15 previous prospective clinical studies on LRTI (11 clinical and 4 epidemiological studies) that have been reviewed. Our aims were to analyse the role of hMPV in community acquired pneumonia (CAP) and the seroconversion rate to hMPV in a prospective study in North Italian children. During a 15-month study period, 124 children were admitted due to presump

Human metapneumovirus infection in an immunocompetent adult presenting as mononucleosis-like illness.

A 37-year-old man was presented with incidental findings of neutropenia, atypical lymphocytosis, thrombocytopenia and deranged liver parenchymal enzymes. Four days later, he developed fever, sore throat and cervical lymphadenopathy, compatible with mononucleosis-like illness (MLI). Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and viral culture of the nasopharyngeal swab showed human metapneumovirus (hMPV). There was a >/=4-fold rise in IgG against hMPV. This is the first case report illustrating the natural clinical course of hMPV-related MLI.
