Pollution by Urticaceae pollen-influence of selected air pollutants and meteorological parameters.

The goal of this study was to analyze the influence of pollutants (concentrations of NO2, SO2, and soot in the air) and meteorological parameters (air temperature, humidity, wind speed, air pressure, cloud index) on Urticaceae pollen type emission measured in the region of Subotica, Serbia. The concentrations of the air pollutants, Urticaceae pollen, and meteorological parameters were measured over a 5-year period (2009-2013), followed by a statistical analysis of the values obtained. For most of the years examined, the concentration of NO2 correlates significantly with the concentration of Ur

The short-term association between meteorological factors and mumps in Jining, China.

BACKGROUND: An increasing trend of the incidence of mumps has been observed in a few developing countries in recent years, presenting a major threat to children's health. A few studies have examined the relationship between meteorological factors and mumps with inconsistent findings. METHODS: The daily data of meteorological variables and mumps from 2009 to 2013 were obtained from Jining, a temperate inland city of China. A generalized additive model was used to quantify the association between meteorological factors and mumps based on the exposure-response relationship. RESULTS: A total of

Incidences of Waterborne and Foodborne Diseases After Meteorologic Disasters in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Climate change could increase the number of regions affected by meteorologic disasters. Meteorologic disasters can increase the risk of infectious disease outbreaks, including waterborne and foodborne diseases. Although many outbreaks of waterborne diseases after single disasters have been analyzed, there have not been sufficient studies reporting comprehensive analyses of cases occurring during long-term surveillance after multiple disasters, which could provide evidence of whether meteorologic disasters cause infectious disease outbreaks. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess t

Meteorologically-driven circulation and flushing times of the Bay of Algeciras, Strait of Gibraltar.

A primitive-equation model has been used to investigate the meteorologically-driven circulation of the Bay of Algeciras. It is shown that the mean circulation of Atlantic Water (AW) is characterized by an anticyclonic cell, while Mediterranean Water (MW) follows a preferred cyclonic pathway. Meteorological forcing distorts substantially the AW mean circulation pattern, and only modulates that of the MW. Winds drive a vertical circulation cell in the Atlantic layer consistent with Ekman dynamics, whereas the horizontal circulation pattern is markedly dependent on the swift Atlantic jet entering

Weather as a trigger of stroke. Daily meteorological factors and incidence of stroke subtypes.

BACKGROUND: The conclusions of previous studies show little agreement concerning the relationship between weather and the incidence of stroke. We analyse the relationship between daily meteorological conditions and daily as well as seasonal stroke incidence. METHODS: 1,286 consecutive strokes assessed during 3 years (2001-2003) from the reference area of Hospital del Mar were classified as intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) (n = 243) or ischaemic stroke (IS) (n = 1,043). IS was divided in non-lacunar stroke (NLS) (n = 732) and lacunar stroke (LS) (n = 311). Daily meteorological data were obtaine

Meteorological effects on adult mosquito (Culex) populations in metropolitan New Jersey.

For two metropolitan New Jersey counties, monthly average adult mosquito (Culex) catch from New Jersey light trap data sets covering multiple decades is related to a number of meteorological factors. From June through August climatological conditions accounted for between 40% and 50% of the variation in average catch. In general, high monthly precipitation totals both in the month corresponding to the catch and the previous month were associated with increased trap catch. However, individual heavy rainfall events tended to reduce catch. Warm temperatures exerted a positive influence on mosquit

Emergency room admissions, meteorologic variables, and air pollutants: a path analysis.

Daily hospital emergency room admissions at hospitals located within 8 km of Los Angeles Basin monitoring stations at Long Beach, Lennox, Azusa, and Riverside, California, were examined for correlations with pollutant and meteorologic variables for 1974-1975. By conventional correlation and regression with lagged and temporospatial analysis, the authors could not distinguish effects of pollution by particulate sulfate from those due to meteorologic variables and oxidant. The authors use a variety of structural models and path analysis to estimate "direct" effects on emergency room admissions o

Meteorological modulation of ground-level air quality in India based on in situ measurements.

In India, air pollution has become a significant environmental and public health concern due to rapid urbanisation, industrial development, and intensive agricultural activities. This research provides a comprehensive analysis of the monthly and seasonal trends of key air pollutants (PM 10 , PM 2.5 , O 3 , NO 2 , and SO 2 ) along with meteorological factors (i.e. planetary boundary layer height, relative humidity, temperature, precipitation, wind patterns, and surface pressure) from 2017 to 2024. The outcome of this study reveals a significant decline in PM concentrations at sev

Impact of Air Pollutants and Meteorological Factors on the Transmission Rate of Scarlet Fever in China.

Scarlet fever, a resurgent childhood infection, lacks a comprehensive understanding of how environmental factors influence its intrinsic transmission. Most existing studies directly link environmental exposures with incidence rates, the results of which may be confounded by intervention measures. In this work, we aim to investigate the lagged and nonlinear effects of air pollutants and meteorological factors on the transmission rate (β(t)) of scarlet fever across 31 provinces in China from 2013 to 2020. We first reconstruct the time-varying transmission rate from surveillance data based on an

Impact of meteorological factors on Legionella colonisation of water systems and the incidence of Legionnaires' disease.

Climate change will inevitably have consequences for the distribution and activity of infectious diseases. A clear example of this is Legionnaires' disease (LD), a pneumonia caused by the waterborne pathogen Legionella when inhaled from the environment in aerosol form. LD presents a seasonal pattern, with peaks in infection occurring during warmer periods of the year. Coincidentally, some man-made water systems easily reach the warm temperatures necessary for multiplication. In the present study, we analysed relationships between the temperature of the water in water samples, atmospheric tempe

Refined analysis for the effects of ambient wind on sprint based on the local meteorological data.

Environmental factors play a pivotal role in determining sprinter performance, with ambient wind being particularly influential. This study provides a detailed analysis of the effects of ambient wind on sprinting, using the National Stadium of China (NSC) as a case study and incorporating local meteorological wind data. Wind speed and direction data were obtained from the Beijing Meteorological Tower (BMT) for the period 2013 to 2017, enabling an analysis of local wind climate characteristics and the wind field. A local wind field model was developed and simulated in a wind tunnel, and wind en
