Risk factors for hysterectomy among Mexican-American women in the US southwest.

The purpose of this study was to assess risk factors associated with a history of hysterectomy among Mexican-American women living in the United States Southwest. Mexican-American women ages 20-74 at time of interview were defined as a subpopulation among adults in the Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (HHANES), 1982-1984. Language preference, reproductive history, level of education, poverty status, generation of immigration, marital status, and insurance coverage were examined in relation to risk of hysterectomy using weighted tabulation and logistic regression for data result

Elemental mercury in the appendix: an unusual complication of a Mexican-American folk remedy.

BACKGROUND: Ingestion of small amounts of elemental mercury is generally thought to be harmless. However, in 4 previously reported cases, ingested mercury became sequestered in the appendix, causing appendicitis in one. We present a case in which elemental mercury was administered as a Mexican-American folk remedy for abdominal pain and became sequestered in the appendix. CASE REPORT: A 10-year-old Hispanic male presented with 3 days of right-sided abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, and malaise. On admission, his temperature was 41.5 degrees C and he had right abdominal tenderness. Urinalysis s

Prevalence of clinical gallbladder disease in Mexican-American, Anglo, and black women.

Clinical observations have suggested that gallstones are increased in frequency in Mexican-Americans compared to other ethnic groups. Past autopsy surveys have demonstrated a low prevalence in blacks compared to whites. We retrospectively reviewed 1,018 charts to study the prevalence of cholelithiasis in ambulatory women of these three racial/ethnic backgrounds. Mexican-American women were found to have a prevalence of gallbladder disease approximately three times that of black women, with Anglo prevalences falling in an intermediate range. The prevalence of cholelithiasis was also positively

Pain and incident cognitive impairment in very old Mexican American adults.

BACKGROUND: Studies have investigated the association between pain and cognitive impairment among older adults, but the findings are mixed. We assessed the relationship of activity-limiting pain (pain interference) with incident cognitive impairment and the mediating effect of depressive symptoms among Mexican American adults aged ≥80. METHODS: Data were taken from the Hispanic Established Population for the Epidemiological Study of the Elderly (2010-2016). Pain interference, or pain that limited daily activities in the last 12 months, was categorized into none, untreated pain interference, a

Associations of urban greenness with asthma and respiratory symptoms in Mexican American children.

BACKGROUND: Evidence on the association between residential surrounding greenness (RSG) in urban areas with asthma and asthma symptoms is inconsistent. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of RSG with respiratory outcomes in a sample of Mexican American children living in inner-city Chicago, Illinois. METHODS: This study is based on parent-reported data on 1915 Mexican American children. We calculated RSG using the normalized difference vegetation index based on satellite imagery within buffers of 100, 250, and 500 m of each child's residence. Multivariable multilevel mixed-effect logistic

A Modified Trier Social Stress Test for Vulnerable Mexican American Adolescents.

The Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) is a well validated and widely used social stressor that has been shown to induce a 2-4 fold increase in cortisol, the biological output produced by the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis in humans. While studies have explored how modifications to the TSST influence stress responsivity, few studies have created a modified TSST appropriate for vulnerable youth that elicits a significant cortisol stress response. Thus, the current study sought to modify or adjust the TSST in a culturally sensitive way for a vulnerable sample of 14 year-old adolescents.

Maternal Depression and Childhood Overweight in the CHAMACOS Study of Mexican-American Children.

Objective Although previous studies have examined the impact of maternal depression on child overweight and obesity, little is known about the relationship in Latino families, who suffer from high risks of depression and obesity. We prospectively investigated the association between depressive symptoms in women with young children and child overweight and obesity (overweight/obesity) at age 7 years among Latino families. Methods Participants included 332 singletons with anthropometric measures obtained at 7 years from the Center for the Health Assessment of Mothers and Children of Salinas (CHA

In utero exposure to pets is associated with asthma and wheezing in Mexican American children.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations of in utero and early life exposure to cats/dogs and birds with the risk of lifetime doctor-diagnosed asthma and other respiratory conditions in a sample of Mexican American (MA) children 4-18 years of age. METHODS: This study is a population-based cross-sectional investigation of 1816 MA children. We conducted multiple logistic models examining the relationship of asthma and wheezing with exposures to cats/dogs and birds in utero, infancy and at the time of the survey adjusted for country of birth, family history of asthma/allergies, antibiotics use in

Acculturation factors are associated with folate intakes among Mexican American women.

Folic acid can prevent neural tube defects (NTD). Hispanic women have a higher prevalence of NTD than non-Hispanic white (NHW) women and consume less folic acid. Among Hispanics, acculturation has been associated with lower intakes of natural folate. It is unknown if this same relationship is seen for fortified foods. This article describes the associations of acculturation factors with usual folate intakes from foods and supplements and compares the proportion that meets recommended intakes of folic acid of US Mexican American (MA) women with those of NHW women. For US NHW and MA women aged 1

Urban Mexican-American mothers' beliefs about caries etiology in children.

OBJECTIVES: Caries is a severe condition which disproportionately affects Latino children in the US. This study sought contextual understanding of urban, low-income Mexican-American mothers' beliefs, perceptions, knowledge and behavior surrounding causes of caries. METHODS: In urban San José, CA, a qualitative study was conducted with a convenience sample of Mexican-American mothers of young children about their beliefs and knowledge about the causes of caries. Audio-taped in-depth interviews with open-ended questions, primarily in Spanish, were translated to English and then transcribed verb

Examination of association with candidate genes for diabetic nephropathy in a Mexican American population.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a multifactorial complication characterized by persistent proteinuria in susceptible individuals with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Disease burden in people of Mexican-American descent is particularly high, but there are only a few studies that characterize genes for DN in this ethnic group. Two genes, carnosine dipeptidase 1 (CNDP1) and engulfment and cell motility 1 (ELMO1) previously showed association with DN in other ethnic groups. CNDP1 and ELMO1 were examined along with eight other genes that are less well characterized for DN in a n

Mexican American women's adherence to hemodialysis treatment: a social constructivist perspective.

Mexican Americans have as much as a six-times greater risk of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) than non-Hispanic white Americans, and women show a faster rate of decline in diabetic renal functioning. The leading treatment for ESRD is hemodialysis, an intensive, complex treatment regimen associated with high levels of patient nonadherence. Previous studies of patient adherence have adopted a biomedical, practitioner-oriented approach focused on performance of fixed behaviors and ignoring contextual and motivational factors. The author describes a social constructivist approach to understanding h

Frequency and types of partner violence among Mexican American college women.

OBJECTIVE AND PARTICIPANTS: The authors studied the prevalence of partner violence, by type, among Mexican American college women aged 18 to 35 years (N = 149; response rate = 85%). RESULTS: Twelve percent of women who reported a dating partner in the past year were physically or sexually assaulted, 12.1% were stalked, and 9.1% scored as psychologically abused. Among those experiencing partner violence, almost half experienced stalking and 89% reported psychological abuse. Few women (25%) who experienced physical violence believed violence was a problem in their relationship. CONCLUSIONS: Pa

Psychosocial factors influencing Mexican-American women's adherence with hemodialysis treatment.

Patients frequently do not fully adhere to treatment regimens. Despite the fact that this issue has been extensively researched, patient nonadherence is still not well understood. Previous studies have tended to neglect the study of phenomenological perceptions and psychosocial influences on nonadherence behavior as well as issues unique to culturally diverse populations. This author used an interpretive approach to examine the cognitive and phenomenological dimensions of how Mexican-American women receiving dialysis treatment experience their illness (n = 26). Poverty, longer treatment histor
