The role of tendon microcirculation in Achilles and patellar tendinopathy.

Tendinopathy is of distinct interest as it describes a painful tendon disease with local tenderness, swelling and pain associated with sonographic features such as hypoechogenic texture and diameter enlargement. Recent research elucidated microcirculatory changes in tendinopathy using laser Doppler flowmetry and spectrophotometry such as at the Achilles tendon, the patellar tendon as well as at the elbow and the wrist level. Tendon capillary blood flow is increased at the point of pain. Tendon oxygen saturation as well as tendon postcapillary venous filling pressures, determined non-invasively

Macro- and microcirculation in the lower extremities--possible relationship.

AIMS: Impaired blood supply is a significant risk factor for diabetic foot ulceration and gangrene. A possible relationship between peripheral macroangiopathy and the spectral components of microvascular skin blood flow in the lower extremities was tested in diabetic patients (DP) and non-diabetic subjects (C). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Basal skin blood flow (BSBF) was recorded for 30min at the right and left medial malleolus (predominantly nutritive capillary circulation) by laser Doppler flowmetry in 64 DP and 31 C. Its oscillatory components were analyzed using wavelet transform. Peripheral ar

Observations on peripheral microcirculation in young hypertensive patients.

The increase of the peripheral blood flow resistance level is the major hemodynamic parameter in pathophysiology of essential hypertension (HT). The functional and morphological abnormalities of the microcirculation in the early stage, sometimes before the increase of the blood pressure, are intensely explored. Their identification is a proof for the genetical component of the hypertensive disease theory (studies on young male patients). Our purpose is to examine the capillary peripheral bed at the terminal phalanx level using in vivo capillary microscopy on a group of patients that have the r

Interactions between NO and O2 in the microcirculation: a mathematical analysis.

Biotransport of nitric oxide (NO) and of oxygen (O(2)) in the microcirculation are inherently interdependent, since all nitric oxide synthase (NOS) isoforms (eNOS, nNOS, and iNOS) require O(2) to produce NO. Furthermore, tissue O(2) consumption is reversibly inhibited by NO. To investigate these complex interactions, a mathematical model was developed for coupled mass transport of NO and O(2) around a cylindrical arteriole using finite element computational methods. Steady-state radial NO and O(2) gradients in the bloodstream, plasma layer, endothelium, vascular wall, and surrounding tissue we

Structural and hemodynamic analysis of the mouse retinal microcirculation.

PURPOSE: In the holangiotic retina, little is known about the connections between and the circulation within microvessel layers. The goal of the present study was to explore the three-dimensional arrangement and hemodynamics of mouse retinal microvessels. METHODS: Confocal microscopy was performed on fluorescein dextran-filled retinal flatmounts. Capillary velocity in the deep layer was measured by epifluorescence intravital microscopy. The changes in the studied parameters after branch retinal vein occlusion were evaluated. RESULTS: The superficial and intermediate layers are both asymmetri

Nongenomic vascular action of aldosterone in the glomerular microcirculation.

Aldosterone (Aldo) accelerates hypertension, proteinuria, and glomerulosclerosis in animal models of malignant hypertension or chronic renal failure. Aldo may exert these deleterious renal effects by elevating renal vascular resistance and glomerular capillary pressure. To test this possibility, directly examined were the action of Aldo on the afferent (Af) and efferent (Ef) arterioles (Arts). Examined were the effect of Aldo added to both the bath and lumen on the intraluminal diameter (measured at the most responsive point) of rabbits. Aldo caused dose-dependent constriction in both arteriol

[Hemodynamics and microcirculation in a rat poisoned by scorpion venom]].

The clinic table of serious scorpionic envenimation is dominated by cardiovascular and pulmonary perturbations. The physiopathology of cardiac failure in man as well as at animal is again badly elucidated. The aim of our study has consisted in evaluating the hemodynamic variations of the Rat poisoned by the venom of the Buthus occitanus scorpion and to contribute through the analyse of plasmatic concentrations of catecholamines and by an histomorphometric study of muscular microcirculation to explain the mechanism of the hemodynamic perturbations and cardiac failure. 51 rats corresponding to 9

Relationship between recurrence of gastric ulcer and the microcirculation.

We investigated the relationship between microcirculatory disturbance and the host response to Helicobacter pylori infections in gastric ulcer scars to determine the role of endothelin-1 (ET) in ulcer recurrence. The subjects were divided into three groups. The GuS group consisted of patients who had red scarring (S1 stage) at the gastric angle with H. pylori, the gast+ group who had gastritis with H. pylori, and the gast- group who had gastritis without H. pylori. During endoscopic examination, biopsies were taken from the gastric angle. Mucosal ET, nitric oxide (NO), interleukin-8 (IL-8), an

Life and death in the microcirculation: a role for angiotensin II.

OBJECTIVE: Angiotensin II (ANGII) plays a critical role in the maintenance of the microcirculation and in the anatomical loss of microvessels (rarefaction) that occurs in low renin forms of hypertension and in animals fed a high-salt diet. Elevations in sodium intake can trigger a series of hemodynamic and hormonal responses culminating in a substantial rarefaction of small arterioles and capillaries in both normal and reduced renal mass hypertensive rats. METHODS: Immunohistochemistry, Northern blot, and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis of microdissected bloo

Quantitative analysis of small intestinal microcirculation in the mouse.

Impairment of intestinal nutritive perfusion and accumulation of inflammatory cells in the intestinal microvasculature are well-known sequelae of mesenteric ischemia/reperfusion, sepsis, and shock. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying these alterations are still not fully understood. The mouse is particularly suitable for the study of these mechanisms since in this species the involvement of, for example, adhesion receptors or pro-/anti-adhesive mediators can be selectively investigated by the use of monoclonal antibodies or gene-targeted strains. The aim of our present study was, ther

[Compromised tissue perfusion for defective microcirculation in children].

After a brief review of the anatomic and physiological features of the microcirculatory system, the Authors describe a new interpretation of skin edema in acute diffuse infantile glomerulonephritis, in Henoch-Schönlein's purpura, in epidemic parotitis and in Kawasaki's disease. They attribute the cellular swelling typical of elastic oedema of these diseases to respiratory deficiency due to reduced tissue perfusion following insufficient circulation in real capillaries. The ensuring drop in energy is rapidly resolved by use of very small doses of a calcium antagonist, chloropromazine, which als

[The effect of nifedipine on the microcirculation in pregnancy-induced hypertension].

OBJECTIVES: To study the effects of nifedipine on the microcirculation in pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH). METHODS: We observed the microcirculation in nailfold of 30 normal pregnant women and 76 cases of PIH. 20 mg nifedipine was given and nailfold microcirculation was observed after 30 minutes. RESULTS: Nifedipine increased the velocity of blood flow, reduced the aggregation of erythrocytes, and dilated capillaries. After the administration of nifedipine, the total score of the nailfold microcirculation decreased significantly in mild and moderate PIH (P < 0.05), but no marked differe

Three-dimensional structure of the bronchial microcirculation in sheep.

BACKGROUND: The bronchial circulation affects both pulmonary vascular and airway activity. Fundamental to understanding the role of the bronchial microcirculation in health and disease is understanding its anatomy. This study sought to identify specific structural elements that might contribute to the drop that occurs between the systemic blood pressure of the bronchial artery and the low pressure of the pulmonary bed into which the bronchial circulation flows and to better describe the connections of the bronchial and pulmonary circulations. METHODS: To do this, the lungs of five sheep were

[Microcirculation of gastric mucosa in pathogenesis of stomach ulcer].

During the last decade, evidence increased that microcirculatory disorders play a pivotal role in the development of mucosal injury, and, hence, formation of gastric ulcer. Mucosal microcirculation is altered at least by two distinct mechanisms: Stimulation of acid secretion leads to a rise of blood flow in the acid-secreting areas, and, concomitantly, due to a steal-phenomenon to a decrease of mucosal capillary perfusion of the antrum, which results in temporary ischemia. In addition, surface noxae-induced release of potent mediators, such as histamine, leukotrienes, thromboxane, platelet-act

Effect of a gel formulation of sucralfate on gastric microcirculation.

Dyspeptic patients (n = 12) with endoscopic signs of chronic gastritis were treated orally for 28 days with a new gel formulation of sucralfate at a dose of 1 g twice daily. Before and after treatment, gastric blood flow was assessed during endoscopy by means of laser Doppler flowmetry. The sucralfate gel promoted a significant increase (P < 0.001) in blood perfusion in all patients, restoring normal levels of gastric microcirculation. The results are consistent with observations in animals, suggesting that the mechanisms responsible for the gastroprotective and therapeutic properties of sucra

Histological evidence of specialized microcirculation of the endolymphatic sac.

A specialized type of blood vessel is demonstrated within the dense soft tissue areas of the vestibular aqueduct and vascular channels of the surrounding bone, including the paravestibular canaliculus (PVC). The vessel wall is formed by the collagen-smooth muscle bundles of these areas. The lumen of these vessels is irregular, and segments appear to be closed by apposition of the bundles. The vessels are continuous with the capillaries of the endolymphatic sac. It is not clear whether they are on the venous side of the capillary system, or on the arterial side and might possibly be part of an
