While the impact of oral microbiome dysbiosis on autoimmune diseases has been partially investigated, its role on bullous diseases like Pemphigus Vulgaris (PV) is a totally unexplored field. This study aims to present the composition and relative abundance of microbial communities in both healthy individuals and patients with oral PV lesions. Ion Torrent was used to apply deep sequencing of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene to oral smear samples of 15 healthy subjects and 15 patients. The results showed that the most dominant phyla were Firmicutes (55.88% controls-c vs 61.27% patients-p, p value = 0

AIMS: To investigate whether localization of beta-catenin is helpful in differentiating primary ovarian mucinous carcinoma and colorectal adenocarcinoma metastatic to the ovary. Extra-ovarian cancers which metastasize to the ovaries, especially from colorectal adenocarcinoma, frequently mimic primary ovarian carcinomas, particularly endometrioid and mucinous types. Distinguishing primary ovarian carcinoma from metastatic colorectal carcinoma is important for both therapeutic and prognostic reasons. Even after thorough histological examination, metastatic colorectal adenocarcinomas are still of

Mycobacterium abscessus and Kocuria species are rare causes of infections in humans. Endocarditis by these agents has been reported in only 11 cases. M. abscessus is a particularly resistant organism and treatment requires the association of antibiotics for a prolonged period of time. We report a case of native mitral valve bacterial endocarditis due to M. abscessus and Kocuria species in a 48-year-old man with a history of intravenous drug use. The case was complicated by a perforation of the posterior mitral valve leaflet, leading to surgical mitral valve replacement. Cultures from the blood

We report an unusual case of endocarditis occurring in a 74-year-old man with a history of systemic hypertension, diabetes mellitus and minor amputation for left forefoot ulcer. The patient was hospitalized for vacuum-assisted closure therapy to aid in wound healing. After the first treatment session, the patient reported abdominal pain with haematemesis and fever (40 °C). Owing to persistent fever, three blood cultures were performed, all positive for Kocuria kristinae. The identification was based on biochemical tests and automated systems. The speciation of the micro-organism was achieved w

BACKGROUND Infective endocarditis is a potentially life-threatening disease predominantly affecting the heart valves. Common causative pathogens include Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus viridans. However, it can be caused by atypical organisms such as Rothia species (spp.). When Rothia spp. cause endocarditis, the organism often affects prosthetic valves and rarely native ones. We report a case of native aortic valve subacute endocarditis caused by R. mucilaginosa, initially misidentified as Neisseria sicca, in an immunocompromised middle-aged patient. CASE REPORT A 54-year-old man with

The creation of an R-selective ω-amine transaminase (ω-ATA) as biocatalyst is crucial for the asymmetric amination of prochiral ketones to produce sitagliptin intermediates because rare ω-ATAs are R-selective in nature and most of them suffer from poor stability and low activity toward bulky prochiral ketones. Here, the gene of an R-selective ω-ATA was cloned from Arthrobacter cumminsii ZJUT212 (AcATA) and expressed in Escherichia coli. The best variants (M1 + M122H and M1+T134 G) were obtained using a semi-rational protein design after screening. These variants not only exhibited improved act

Kocuria rosea is usually a nonpathogenic commensal colonizing the skin and oropharynx but can become an opportunistic pathogen in immunocompromised states. Documented cases of any infections with K. rosea are exceedingly rare. This study reports the first case of canaliculitis with K. rosea, its clinicomicrobiological correlation, and management.

A new thiazolyl peptide, kocurin (1), was isolated from culture broths of a marine-derived Kocuria palustris. Its structural elucidation was accomplished using a combination of spectroscopic and chemical methods, including HRMS, extensive 1D and 2D NMR analysis, MS/MS fragmentation, and chemical degradation and Marfey's analysis of the resulting amino acid residues. The structure herein reported corrects that previously assigned to PM181104 (3). Kocurin displayed activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), with MIC values in the submicromolar range.

Initial numbers of bacteria associated with wild (brown trout and pike) and cultured (rainbow trout) freshwater fish as well as with the water in which they were caught were determined. Subsequently, a total of 979 randomly selected isolates were characterized and identified to the genus level. For all counts performed (aerobes, psychrotrophs, anaerobes, Enterobacteriaceae, and enterococci), no significant differences were observed in water samples, the highest level corresponding to psychrotrophs in pike environments (4.23 X 10(3) CFU/ml). Overall, the skin and intestinal content of brown tro

Four strains of a Gram-stain-positive, coccoid, catalase-positive, non-motile bacterium were recovered from nasal lavage samples collected from children in Wisconsin during the Spring of 2008. These strains, designated RSM42T, RSM292, RSM386 and RSM407, were subjected to a comprehensive biochemical and polyphasic taxonomic investigation. Despite the novel bacterium sharing 99.6% 16S rRNA gene sequence identity with Rothia mucilaginosa 5762/67T, BLAST+ average nucleotide identity, MUMmer3 average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values of 91.3%, 91.9% and 43.1%, respectivel

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is an important tool for pathogen detection, but historically, it has not been possible to accurately identify PCR products without sequencing, Southern blots, or dot-blots. Microarrays can be coupled with PCR where they serve as a set of parallel dot-blots to enhance product detection and identification. Microarrays are composed of many discretely located probes on a solid substrate such as glass. Each probe is composed of a sequence that is complimentary to a pathogen-specific gene sequence. PCR is used to amplify one or more genes and the products are then hy

In a prospective study in young women, novobiocin-resistant subgroup-3 micrococci were the second commonest cause, after Escherichia coli; of acute urinary infections. Proteus mirabilis was the only other causative organism. Symptoms, pyuria, or possible aetiological factors were the same in micrococcal and coliform infections. The infecting micrococcus "biotype" was only rarely found among the normal flora of the genitourinary tract of young women, though other micrococci and staphylococci were commonly present. Evidently, the infecting micrococci are selectively pathogenic in the urinary tra

Fitness centers represent high-contact environments where microorganisms can accumulate and persist on shared surfaces. This study aimed to investigate bacterial contamination dynamics on gym equipment and evaluate the effects of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) nebulization combined with preceding professional manual cleaning on the recovery of viable surface-associated microorganisms. A two-phase investigation was conducted in a commercial fitness facility. Repeated environmental sampling was performed on 12 gym devices over five consecutive days at three daily timepoints (morning, midday, evening),

PURPOSE: Cervical cancer remains a significant public health concern globally and particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, where high rates of HIV infection exacerbate cervical cancer incidence. Understanding the cervical microbiome and its role in cancer progression is essential, especially in regions where both cervical cancer incidence and HIV prevalence are high. This study aimed to characterize the cervical microbiome in women living with HIV (WLWH) and HIV-negative women with squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix in Botswana, compare the microbiome between before and after chemoradiation ther

This study was the first to describe the hitherto deficiently evaluated alkaline tolerance of Kocuria marina isolate from a pediatric patient with continuous intravenous epoprostenol dosing therapy. Our isolate from blood of a 7-year-old Japanese boy was finally identified as K. marina by the morphological, cultural, and biochemical properties together with the comparative sequence analyses of the 16S rRNA genes. The K. marina isolate, the causative agent of catheter-related blood-stream infection, was not only revealed to be salt tolerant (NaCl 15%), but also demonstrated to be stably survive

Endemic infection in male surgical wards has been studied during three periods. There was some infection due to gram-negative bacilli, though Staphylococcus aureus remained as the single most important pathogen even in the absence of epidemic spread. Beta haemolytic streptococci were isolated in large numbers from the lesions of four patients with deep wound infection. Changes introduced in the pattern of post-operative care reduced sepsis due to Staph. aureus, reduced the severity of wound infection and apparently decreased the need for antibiotic therapy. Patients who became infected were re
